    1. [BOYD] Reading certain Pennsylvania Publications
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. In the Report of the State Librarian of Pennsylvania, 1901, page 296, it listed these publications: 1) Pennsylvania Genealogies; Chiefly Scotch-Irish and German. By William Henry Egle, M. D. Harrisburg, 1886. 8vo Reprinted, 1896. pp 798. (I am not sure if “8vo” means that this is in 8 volumes or not?) 2) Notes and Queries: Historical Biographical and Genealogical. Edited by William Henry Egle, M. D., Harrisburg, 4to. Original Series, 1879, pp 166. First Series, 1881, pp 208. Second Series, 1883, pp 342. Third Series, 1887, Volume I, pp 588; 1891 Volume II , pp 552; Volume III, pp 565. Reprint, Harrisburg, 1894-1896. Beyound all others the most important publication relating to the Scotch-Irish in America. It also lists:- 3) Colonial Records of Pennsylvania. Edited by Samuel Hazard, Harrisburg, 1838-1853. 8vo 16 volumes. 4) General Index to the Colonial Records and Pennsylvania Archives. Philadelphia, 1860. 8vo pp vi653. Also listed were Pennsylvania Archives, Ist series, 2nd series and 3rd series which contained 59 Volumes comprise the documentary history of Pennsylvania, colonial, provincial, Indian wars, Revolution period, War of 1812-14, early marriages, board of property, etc and form a record indispensable to the genealogical and historian. I think during my visit in 2010 to Pennsylvania I looked at one volume of Pennsylvania Genealogies; Chiefly Scotch-Irish and German and copied some pages. Has anyone looked at other volumes of this work and do they contain any Boyds. Has any member read these other Pennsylvania books and do they contain any Boyd records/data? If so, could you advise which publications has Boyd listed please. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society

    3. All those publications are in PA public and university libraries. Egle's Pennsylvania Genealogies is now online and includes Boyds. I have not found Notes and Queries to consistently have accurate information on families. I don't think those volumes have been digitized. Notes and Queries may be the precursor to electronic genealogy websites :-). People sent genealogical inquiries and family trees to Egle that may or may not have been accurate. Egle tried to respond. Note that Mr. Egle is the same person in several of these publications so his information is unlikely to differ from one publication to another. Colonial Records (Hazard) also can be accessed online (and may be the same as the First Series of the PA archives). PA Archives is an enormous, valuable collection. It is important to figure out which volume is worthwhile for the researcher. The Third Series includes an index to the first 16 volumes and is helpful. The First series contains colonial records edited by Hazard. The Second and Third series edited by Egle have military rosters and county information including marriages. Boyds will be found in these two volumes and probably in the 5th and 6th series which also include military records, marriages. The 7th series is an index to the 6th series. The 4th series is papers of PA Governors and of limited interest I assume. Note that in the indexes you may find a list of surnames such as Boyd with no first names. It helps to know what you are trying to find--e.g. the Rev. War rosters for Chester County or Philadelphia marriages. Boyd researchers should check the PA Historical and Museum Commission website to find digitized records including military rosters and land records.
