In the Will of Samuel Boyd, who is thought to have come from Ballyhalbert, Ards Peninsular, County Down, and was a tailor in New York City, of 1757 it said in part from: "The following are wills copied from ABSTRACTS OF WILLS ON FILE IN THE SURROGATE'S OFFICE, CITY OF NEW YORK. Abstracts of Wills Vol V 1754-1760, Page 219. “… I leave to my brother David and his children in Ireland œ100, and œ20 now in the hands of Mr. Jesse Craig. I leave to my honored father [not named] œ3 Stirling yearly during his life. “ This indicates that both his brother David and his un-named father were still living in Ireland – (the research group that I am part of ASSUME that this was in Ballyhalbert, but we are not 100% confident if that is true or not.) From the first line about David getting money from “Mr Jesse Craig”, does anyone know whom this “Jesse Craig” might have been and where he lived, etc. (I am ASSUMING Samuel Boyd had sent him some goods.) This Samuel Boyd, also had a power of attorney for a Mr Thomas Gelston, whom we also think came from the Ards Peninsular. In noticed in the BALLYHALBERT OLD GRAVEYARD “GELSTON Here lieth the body of Thomas Gelston late of. ...........? who departed this life. ......1761 aged 72 yrs.(OFF GRANSHA BORN 1689) Also Mary Gelston alias ......... who departed this life March 20th 1756 aged 26 yrs Also John Gelston, son to Samuel Gelston who died in childhood Here lieth the body of Hugh Gelston, late of Loughdoo who died September 26th September 1773 aged 55 yrs Likewise on the south side of this tomb lieth the body of Mary Ann Gelston alias SMITH, wife of Samuel Gelston of Granshaw who died May 3rd 1802 aged 63 yrs Likewise the remains of the aforesaid Samuel Gelston who died 11th July 1811 aged 80 yrs.” So could this Thomas Gelston be the same person who gave Samuel Boyd of NYC this Power of Attorney.? Are there any members of the Craig and Gelston families that might help to “unsort” this puzzle? Thank you. Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
