    3. Susan IF I RECALL CORRECTLY, there were two ways for family to have Land in Ireland. The could own it or lease it. If they owned land, the eldest son would inherit the land and the younger sons would have to move or buy their own. However if they leased, and because some rents were on three lifetime - ie three generations - it would be the youngest sons name who would be put on the lease. So we need to work out which of these two situations might have occurred with this family. One section stayed in Ireland and another came to the USA. My first thought when I saw John Boyd of Ballymena, I thought this John Boyd was in Chapter 6/334:- T1? John Boyd, b / /1730 ( , Ireland), d / /1806 ( , 96th District, SC), bu , mc / /175x (church, town, county, Ireland?), Mary Fenn, dau of and (nee ) Fenn, b / /173x ), d / /17xx ( , Ireland or USA?), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] Whose family came in 1768 and Landed at Hampton Roads, Virginia on the ship Earl of Donnegal, Duncan Ferguson in Command, with three sons and a daughter. Then I noticed the date was not the same, so I looked at the John Boyd in Chapter 4/244: T1 John Boyd, bc 1740 ( , Ireland), d 6/11/1815 (Bushy Creek, Union District, SC), bu , mc 1766 ( , , Newberry Dist., SC ), Jane Bernardoe, dau of and (nee ) Bernardoe bc 1750 ( ), d / /1835 ( , Union Co, SC), bu and had issue:- [Lived: , SC? ] - Details? Jane name might also be spelt as Bernardoc rather than Bernardoe. John and Jane are on the DAR Patriot Index. Address is http:www.ancestry.com/ You will need the GEDCOM family program to download the infromation that the DAR has. - 2/7/98 Hila Van Horn in the October 1998 issue of Dean Road, p 16, said that John Boyd was born 21 November 1740 in Ballymena, Co Antrim, Ireland. However there is no John currently listed as being born in 1740 [CHECK AGAIN - 28/10/98] and they had a son Samuel Boyd U8 Samuel Boyd, b 1783 ( , Union Co?, SC) d 12/1/1860 ( , Monroe County, MS), bu , Mary Ann (Polly) Thompson, dau of and (nee ) Thompson, bc 1788 ( ), d /6/1859 ( , Monroe County, MS), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] There are a number of researchers of this family on the Boyd net list which maybe able to help you. What date of birth (or estimate) do you have for Thomas Boyd? My GUESS is 1790-1805, which I would estimate that he is the second or more likely the third generation after John Boyd from Chapter 4/244. Butcher, I suspect, was his occupation rather than a second name. Ballymena, County Antrim is a centre for a number of Boyd families with one said to have settled there in in 1575. As the Agnews form Wigtonshire also settled in Ballymena, it maihgt mean that these Boyds came form Wigtonshire rather than Ayrshire. I will write to you privately about your family. Unfortunately it never happens. Now, through DNA testing on Ancestry and on GEDmatch I've been told I have a connection to a circle of people all descended from Samuel Boyd (1783 South Carolina) son of John (1740 Ballymena, Antrim Ireland). Still, after checking the trees of those people I find no record of my Jane Boyd (born 1853 Greenock Scotland) daughter of William Boyd (born about 1825 Antrim Ireland) son of Thomas Boyd (a labor/butcher who was deceased before 1857). I believe my research because I have located the following documents: William Boyd's 2 marriages and death record. (His death record shows a mother named Margaret McNeil however his 2nd marriage shows a different mother-Sarah McAlister) All other information matches including the street address in Greenock, Scotland and his father Thomas Boyd as well as both of his wives. Jane Boyd’s marriage. This shows William as her father and his first wife Jane Kane as her mother. I have never found her birth record. Any suggestions? Does anyone know if maybe Thomas (a butcher) could be a middle or nickname? Does it seem likely that a family would split up and have some stay in Ireland/Scotland while everyone else goes to Southern United States? Other than the connection through DNA I have no family history in Southern United States. This brick wall seems impossible :-( Susan Sent from my iPhone Susan Hemsley Cicala☎
