Hey Barry, As I read this book this index contains the names of the “religious fanatics” (so called by the King’s thugs) who were were tortured and executed for their steadfastness in their Presbyterian beliefs and refused to take an oath unto the King who declared that he was the head of the Church. There would be a great number of people who escaped this inquisition or never asked one way or the other. These names would not be in this index. That would account for the known Boyds not included in the index. Mike, This is a Great list. Where to start? I guess we should identify all of the ones we can. I will start by noticing that there are no Boyd of Airth on this list which fits since those who we think are their descendants were all Anglican. So, here is a list of known Presbetyrians, in Scotland prior to 1700. Chronologically by approximation of birth 1650 James Boid of Balwhatstone- Where was this? John Boyd of Trochrig- this is odd to me. John Boyd of Edinburgh, Midlothian. can we eliminate that these are the same John? John Boyd of Glasgow, Lanark- there are two Boyds of Lanark on this list John and William 1655 Alexander Boyd of Hartfield (note that the spelling is "Boyid") Where was Hartfield? Alexander Boyd of Kilbride Parish- ? Kilbride castle? or was that a Hamilton holding by this time? Alexander Boyd of Noddsdaill- interesting that the Boyd are still in possession of this land at this time in history as the first reference to Robert Boyd the first refers to him as "of Noddsdale". Have we ever identified where this is? It is not Portincross as there is another on this list from there. Lady Christian Boyd of Harden (wife of Sir William Scott) I bet this is a story to tell James Boyd in Ruthwall? Janet Boyd in Robiquhat Jean Boyd in Robiquhat- Where is Robiquhat? were these man and wife, brother sister, two sisters? John Boyd in Kirktoun John Boyd in Ruthwall- Two from Ruthwall, brothers or cousins? John Boyd in Whait John Boyd in Auchingavin John Boyd in Collehill These are all obviously different men. Where were these towns? notice the "in" instead of "of" designation, the "of" tending to allude to the person being possessor of the lands mentioned. some women Katherine Boyd in Moffat- a wife?, widow, or daughter? Margaret Boyd in Kirkudbright- same questions Mary in Raeburn Mary in Ruthwall Mungo Boyd in Heyberries- !! this should strike a tone for some American Boyds. we see this name here. Robert Boyd in Smellholme -several pages about this fellow. he seems to be an important Covenanter. Robert Boyd at Carmunock- this says he was a minister. Where was Carmunock and what does "at" mean? Thomas Boyd in Kilmarnock- note not "of", this is the only Kilmarnock on this list and the castle was still standing. William Boyd in Merton parish- Boyds of Merton? William Boyd in Glasgow, Lanark- So the lords on this list seem to be: Alexander of Hartfield- (spelled Boyid) this Lady Christian of Harden wife of Sir William Scott, John Boyd of Trochrig John Boyd of Midlothian (possibly the castle we now call "Bedlay" as this was before the sale) Robert Boyd of Portencross (the elder)- known and last but not least on the list is one born about 1672 named George whose place is simply "Scotland" Interesting how many known Boyds are NOT on this list. I look forward to hearing from the researchers on these several places. Barry in Dallas
