Someone from SC may be able to provide better info, Mike, but The Handy Book for Genealogists shows SC became a State in 1788 although first colony was established on Ashley River in SE part of SC in 1671 by group of English and another group whose members had been living on Barbados Islands. Edgefield County was created in 1785 from the parent county District 96 (no longer exists) that was one of the original counties formed in 1769. Other counties formed from District 96 are: Abbeville Co. in 1785; Laurens Co. in 1785; Newberry Co. in 1785; Spartanburg Co. in 1785; and Union Co. in 1798. Counties that were later formed from Edgefield County were Aiken Co. in 1871 & Saluda Co. in 1896.
