I have just been sent a message which told me that in 1753, Robert Boyd of Virginia – whom after the male line of the Boyds of Penkill had died out and as he was the next male in the Trochrig Cadet Branch – inherited both Penkill and Trochrig Lairdships. He is described as being the son of James Boyd, physician near Westpoint upon York River, in Virginia. In 1999 I was told that this James lived in of King and Queen Co. VA. So I am not sure if “Westpoint upon York River” is or was in King and Queen Co., VA in 1753. Do any members of this list come form these areas of Virginia? Or has any member done any research for any Boyds in this area of Virginia? I only know about 10 people who are connected to the central Stem of the Head of the Clan and about half of these belong to the Boyds of Penkill and Trochrig. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Mike, Westpoint is still in King and Queen County, VA. Of course, they now call it King William County, but it's the same. This region is also known as Port Richmond, VA. Westpoint is the actual harbor at the end of York River. -- Colin Brooks The 1718 Project CB1718project@gmail.com
Mike, well that's kinda right but not really. His name was not Robert. Since you are inquiring about the line that returned to Scotland from Virginia the subject is more rightly the Boyds of Penkill as Spencer did not inherit Trochraig, only Penkill, but he did so by right of being descended from Robert of Trochrig. As this is a chapter in my soon to be finished book I will skip the prose and give the line. Penkill is by far the most amazing of the Boyd castles in Scotland and the best chapter in the tale of our great family Our story begins with Sir Alexander Boyd brother of Lord Kilmarnock who was tutor in Arms to the young Stewart prince and future King James III when the princess Mary was wed to Sir Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran. These are his lands in Carrick sometimes referred to as being in Dailly. He never took posession of them as King James had him killed but the lands passed to his third son Adam who began the keep in about 1490. The Muir family claimed these lands and many years later their would be a chancery court case in which the Boyds won. (More info in the book) Adam had two sons: Robert Boyd who extended the castle and lands, James who built Trochrig House. The third Lord Penkill was also Adam, son of Robert, who married a Kennedy woman and they were in the castle as residence by 1530 and the castle was strong enough to resist a siege by her father by 1553. This is the Sir Adam that was among the Boyd knights that formed a circle about Queen Mary at Langside in 1568 as were his two sons: Adam who succeeded his father in 1583, and Sir Alexander Boyd of Penkill, Knight of the Thistle in Scotland, and Knight of the Lily in France, better known by his pen name "Mark Alexander" Boyd who traveled extensively all over Europe as a tournament knight, scholar, poet, and warrior. and returned home when Robert died to tutor his nephew Thomas in the military Arts. Thomas fifth Lord Penkill, confirmed in 1601, took possession of lands granted him in Carrick in 1616 which became part of the Dailly estate (upon this parcel of land just south east of Girvan is where our subject Spencer Boyd of Virginia would later build a small but beautiful manor house that still stands called "Piedmont Cottage". He married Marion Muir whose father left them enough money to greatly expand the castle to near what we see today. They had two sons -Thomas, and Alexander* who married Helen Cathcart. Thomas sixth Lord Penkill married Anne Melville sister of the Earl of Melville. They had one son. Thomas Seventh Lord Penkill who married Isabell Lindsey daughter of Lord Balcarras. Alexander, their son became the seventh Lord Penkill before 1711 and he had one daughter who died before he did. So the estate devolved to his second cousin Alexander, eighth Lord Penkill great grandson of Alexander* second son of Thomas, above. When Alexander eight Lord Penkill died unmarried in 1750 the castle passed to John Boyd of Trochrig who then styled himself "of Trochrig and Penkill" but he died without sons. His daughter, Anne, married a fellow named William Robertson who afterwards styled himself William Boyd-Robertson "of Trochrig and Penkill". It was their only daughter who was the last Boyd owner of Trochrig House the castle by this time laying in ruins. So, the castle of Penkill and the Barony that went with it passed to the closest living male which was John Boyd, a physician in Virginia, by right of his descent from James Boyd second son of John Boyd of Trochrig. Dr. John Boyd was never styled "Lord Penkill" because he had no interest in the Scottish estates of his distant relatives and was doing quite well in Virginia. His son Spencer also had no desire to move away from Virginia but did acquire the title and arms from Lord Lyon and was the 10th Lord Penkill. His son James was served as heir in 1782 and is numbered as 11th Lord Penkill but being a confirmed American who lived in the comfort and freedom of his newly born country he also had no desire for a drafty old Scottish castle laying in ruins and remained in Virginia and died without issue. He was a loyal Whig Royalist whose collection of papers is in the possession of Princeton University and should be studied by one of us at some point for more about this family and their dealings in Virginia. His brother Spencer, was confirmed as the 12th "Laird of" Penkill in 1792 and returned to the the ancient Scottish homeland. As the castle was in ruins he took up residence in Girvan and built a lovely little cottage called "Piedmont Cottage" on ancient Boyd lands that were part of this ancient estate. He died in 1807. In 1820 his son Spencer 13th Laird who was just a minor when his father died was confirmed in all his fathers estates. He married Margaret daughter of William Losh of Newcastle and they had two children- Alice and Spencer. He died in 1827. In 1844 his son Spencer attained his majority and became the 14th Laird of Penkill. Spencer was a gentleman planter and brought modern farming into the estate. He sold off many of the surperfluous smaller properties that were part of the estate. He received a large settlement from his father in laws will and set about a complete restoration of the castle. Upon his death the castle passed to his sister Alice the 15th and last Laird of Penkill. And that is where the really interesting part of the story begins....................
