Not mentioning the name Boyd in relation to Kilmarnock does NOT mean the Boyd line doesn't exist. The first Lord Boyd was also regent of Scotland until the King came of age. Lord Boyd was just a heartbeat from the Crown thus garnering him much animosity from the other nobles who conspired to have him over thrown. The fact that our titles are used without the name tells me there is still some animosity towards the Boyds at the time of authorship of the book. Another thing that stirred things up was the marriage of Lord Boyd's son to the Kings sister, Mary. He was created the first Earl of Arran. When the Boyds fell from favor Mary was "forced" to marry a Hamilton and he was given the title Earl of Arran. IF I have stated anything in error I hope that Lauren or Mike would correct me.
