It is not a matter of like or nnot like. It is a matter of science. mtDNA only mutates within every 5,000 to 10 ,000 years. Every person who is a H (forexample) descends from the same Ancient Mother. That makes us cousins. The origin of our mtDNA comes from the area now geopolitically known as Norway. It gets a bit more finite, but not sufficiently so to work in a genealogical sense. Consider the matings and migration over 50,000 years. By mtDNA, I am cousin to Cal Boyd and also Bennett Greenspan of FTDNA. Our relationships cannot be traced through doumentation and never will be. I track genealogically to Bavaria in the 1700s. Cal tracks to Ireland and Bennett tracks to Israel. My mmtDNA has fewer mutations than theirs. Given H mtDNA I am also cousin to the man who owned the massage school I attended. A more distant cousin. All are on the maternal side. We happen to cross paths in modern times. When I had my mtDNA tested I sent my results to my siblings and every known relative who descends from my most distant female Ancestress. We all share the same mtDNA. In general mtDNA is of archaeological interest rather than genealogical interest. There are the more rare instances of it helping to solve a genealogical puzzle. Do a Google search on Jesse James' burial site. And now. I suggest we move any further discussion of. DNA to the Boyd-DNA list. I seem to have caused quite a stir here. Nowt is simple with me when it comes to tracing my ancestry among other things. It is all "education" John. I have still to learn if the DNA test will tell you in how many generations there is the common connection.
