I seem to have opened up a wee discussion here. Nothing is never simple with my lot. My ancestry is as follows: My Dad Harry was born to a James Boyd Stewart and Marguerite Muir in 1930 in Kilmarnock Scotland. James Boyd Stewart was born abt 1880 as James Stewart Boyd also in Kilmarnock, Scotland. He was illegitimate ( father not known) and no fathers details on his Birth Certificate. His mother was a Helen Boyd who was born in Kilmarnock as well abt 1855/60. She was the only daughter of Adam Boyd and Elizabeth Davidson ( whom he divorced.) James Stewart Boyd changed his name to James Boyd Stewart ( his best friends name) to obtain an apprenticeship in local Kilmarnock factory as he had to produce a birth certificate to get job.this certificate had Boyd parents on it. Hence my surname Stewart. James Stewart Boyd was named after his mothers cousins husband, James Stewart. So when you add his mothers surname to cousins husbands name you get : James Stewart Boyd. Hope you are still with me. I have managed to trace this Boyd lineage through Kilmarnock, where I am from, to Crookedholm and Riccarton. John, Based on this information, it would definitely help in your ancestral search for you to test your Y DNA as it definitely sounds you are indeed a true ancestral Boyd. Your Y DNA matches should come out to be overwhelmingly Boyd men going back quite distantly and hopefully a closer match within that. By evaluating your matches once your test results are in you can contact your male matches to learn more on their ancestry as a common forefather would certainly exist, then join an appropriate project on FTDNA to further assist with more insight. James Stewart Boyd changed his name to James Boyd Stewart ( his best friends name) to obtain an apprenticeship in local Kilmarnock factory as he had to produce a birth certificate to get job.this certificate had Boyd parents on it. Hence my surname Stewart. James Stewart Boyd was named after his mothers cousins husband, James Stewart. So when you add his mothers surname to cousins husbands name you get : James Stewart Boyd. John and others I have just started to look at the 1994 IGI for the UK down to Margaret Boyd. James Boyd born in 13 Dec 1791 has these two entries James BOYD (M)........................ C: 1791 B: 30 Jun 1971 SLAKE Ba: 7101817 4 Father: William BOYD Galston, Ayr, Scotland E: 24 Sep 1971 SLAKE So: 1235122 Mother: Jean CREIGHTON SP: 29 Sep 1972 SLAKE James BOYD (M)........................ B: 13 Dec 1791 B: 13 Jul 1886 Ba: C115932 Father: William BOYD Galston, Ayr, Scotland E: 9 Apr 1924 LOGAN So: 1041377 Mother: Jean CREIGHTON SP: 13 Feb 1990 SGEOR Pr: 6902208 The second is from a Church entry, but the first one is form a private Family tree. The Batch Number 7101817 is quite a large Boyd Family Tree (so it looks like this Saturday you are going to your Local LDS Church centre) >From a quick it seems they had a John Boyd born in 1793 and a second John Boyd born in 1795. I assume the first one died before the birth of the second John Boyd. So it would also be worth looking at the OPR's for Galston to see what other entries you might find for this family. (I am not sure if the Burns Centre at Kilmarnock have these OPR's, but I do know that the Heritage at Manse Street, Saltcoats does have then and they are opened on Saturday mornings form 10 am to 5 pm This Batch number has an entry for 1728 in Dundonald and in Craigie in 1738, so before 1761 the family might have moved about - a little. I will see what else I can find, s it can be put into a tree. Nothing is never simple with my lot. My ancestry is as follows: My Dad Harry was born to a James Boyd Stewart and Marguerite Muir in 1930 in Kilmarnock Scotland. James Boyd Stewart was born abt 1880 as James Stewart Boyd also in Kilmarnock, Scotland. He was illegitimate ( father not known) and no fathers details on his Birth Certificate. His mother was a Helen Boyd who was born in Kilmarnock as well abt 1855/60. She was the only daughter of Adam Boyd and Elizabeth Davidson ( whom he divorced.) James Stewart Boyd changed his name to James Boyd Stewart ( his best friends name) to obtain an apprenticeship in local Kilmarnock factory as he had to produce a birth certificate to get job.this certificate had Boyd parents on it. Hence my surname Stewart. I have managed to trace this Boyd lineage through Kilmarnock, where I am from, to Crookedholm and Riccarton. John Stewart
