Arthur S Boyd said in 1924 “The Boyds of Wigton were of the Portincross family.” In the book THE BOYD FAMILY BY ARTHUR S. BOYD, Jr. 1924 on page 11 he says “The Boyds of Wigton were of the Portincross family.” There is no footnote or any other indication as to why he has made this “bold statement” that those Boyds in Wigton – (hear I am assuming he means the Shire and not just the town of Wigton) – have all stemmed from the Boyds of Portincross in North Ayrshire. This sentence was in his footnote on the Boyds of Portincross. Can accept this statement as face value? There is no reason why the younger sons of Portincross did not go to Wigtonshire and perhaps become “landholders” or leased farms in this area. From the known history of the Boyds of Portincross it would/could have taken place in the 1400’s, 1500’s or early 1600’s. However, there is also no reason why other Cadet Branches of Boyds in Ayrshire might not have moved to Wigtonshire. For example much of Wigtonshire was Kennedy “Lands” and these Boyds could equally have come from the Boyds of Penkill after 1532 when Adam Boyd of Penkill married the second Lord Kennedy’s youngest daughter. So if your Boyds have been traced back to Wigtonshire, they might take you back to the Portincross Boyd and to the 1372 and the 6th generation of Boyds. Thank you.
