The family of Spencer Boyd, 10th Laird of Penkill [Ch 18, R1] In the last week or so I have been going through my trip notes since 2005 and found quite a number of articles on the Boyd families of both Penkill and Trochrig. According to Historical and Genealogical Notes, William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 7, Issue 2 (Oct. 1898), p. 126 “Spencer Boyd, came from the county of Ayr, Scotland, to King and Queen Co, VA where he was partner in merchandizing with Thomas Brown. His will bears date Dec 7, 1778, and it was proved May 10, 1779. Issue by First wife: 1, James; and by second wife, Lucy _____, 2, Spencer; 3, Robert; 4, William; 5, Julia; and 6, “the child my wife now goes with.” Under entail his Pinkill estate, in Ayr, descended to his eldest son, James, who dying without heirs, it came to his son, Spencer Boyd, Jr., who returned to Scotland and there died before 1809, leaving an infant son whose guardian was James Thompson. (Chancery Papers in Williamsburg.)” This is the first time that I have seen that this Spencer Boyd had married twice. It also tells us that he had a further four children besides the normal two sons that are general given to him – James Boyd, eleventh Laird of Penkill and Spencer Boyd, twelfth Laird of Penkill. Of the four new children, at least two are sons. So does anyone stem from either Robert or William Boyd? If so, you will be able to go back the Lord Boyd and to 1100’s A. D. and be one of about ten known people who can connect to the Head of the Clan before 1758. And would anyone know the name of the sixth child that would appear to be born after his will was written on 7 December 1778. So do we have any Boyd researchers that can go back to King and Queen County Virginia or to Stratton Main, VA. Another source said that this Spencer Boyd, who died about 1782, lived at Stratton Main, VA. I am not sure if Stratton Main is in King and Queen County, Virginia or not. So could one of our Virginian cousins please confirm this? Would there be any burial records for the late 1770’s and 1780’s period for this area of Virginia or cemetery inscriptions available that might provide further information on this family and their descendants? Thank you. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS #53
