    3. Susan The most common male Boyd names - in rough order - are 1 John 2 James either 3 William or 4 Robert 5 Thomas While you know your family starts with a "William Boyd" born in 1825 in County Antrim, you COULD NOT SAY that he is "connected" to a "William Boyd born in 1705 in Northern Ireland." The Northern Ireland of 1705 most likely meant the Province of Ulster which has 9 counties, where as Northern Ireland today only has 6 Counties. Just to add to the confusion. Even if your William Boyd, was born in say 1725, you could not say they were one and the same person. With such a age gap, all you MIGHT SAY IS THAT THEY "COULD" BE father and son. You would need DNA testing to make the connection. Not a single name. When Cal said that the William Boyd, born in 1705 in Northern Ireland and his wife was Margaret "McClean" - to my eye - this could be a mispelling of Maclean. The Maclean's came from northern Argyllshire. And in the Maclean's of Argdour form the early 1400's you had several Boyd families. In this case it is a THEORY ON MY PART - that if Margaret McClean was in fact a Margaret McLean - then this MIGHT INDICATE his Boyd family came form Argyllshire rather than Ayrshire. So to make a connection you need - name - dates - location - spouse - children and even then, because some many Boyd families have similar names, you still might make the right connection between two generations. Sorry about being so long winded. With your Boyds coming form Derrykeighan, it is known that at least two Boyd families were there in 1637, as one had land to the east and and one had land to the west of Derrykeighan.
