Hello cousins! This is my first post - I've been lurking for a while now. I have lots of questions about tracing my family line, but they will have to wait until I get the family history book my grandparents have. Until then I have a general Boyd question. I regularly see 2 different seals for the Boyd line. The coat of arms and then a simpler one that is the hand surrounded by a sword belt with confido written on the belt. I wad wondering what the difference is (besides aesthetically obviously) between the two. Thanks cousins! Nanyque Boyd
Nanyque Arms are given to a specific person. So when you look at the Chief of Clan Boyd form 1263 to the present he has had 6 different set of Arms. Some years ago, 2009, someone posted a list of the Boyd Arms on website http://www.heraldry.org.uk/boyd/boyd-arms.htm These are grated to each of these individuals and can be passed down to their "Heir". However, if you do not have Arms granted by an Heraldry Authority, as Clansman you can wear the Clan's Strap and motto badge. I regard ANYONE who has the Boyd name or can trace their ancestors back to a BOYD as being a member of the Clan. That would include those adopted, taken the name, etc You can get these clan Boyd badges at Scottish shops (although in Edinburgh and Glasgow they normally do not carry stock of them but can order them for you.) or from a vendor at a Highland Games (but I am not sure if all would carry such badges or if they would order and send them to you.) I hope that helps answer your query Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nanyque" <nanyque@gmail.com> To: <boyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 27, 2011 10:46 AM Subject: [BOYD] Boyd family seal/crest differences > Hello cousins! > > This is my first post - I've been lurking for a while now. > I have lots of questions about tracing my family line, but they will have > to wait until I get the family history book my grandparents have.
