    1. Re: [BOYD] John Montgomery Boyd was Newberry to Meriwether Boyds

    3. There is John Montgomery Boyd that married Louisa Jane Moore that is buried out there in Boyd, AL. Is there another John M Boyd that is older buried there too? When I went to the cemetery a few years ago I didn't walk it because I could not tell if it was private property or not and also someone's dog had followed me down the long drive. Since I was by myself in the middle of nowhere with an unknown dog there too, I took a pic of the gate and left. Rhonda (Cartersville, GA) Message: 10 Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2011 12:31:55 -0400 (EDT) From: jodiek <jodiek444@aol.com> Subject: Re: [BOYD] Newberry to Meriwether Boyds To: boyd@rootsweb.com I meant to jump in last week but got busy and just didn't do it, but I have done a lot of research on some of these Boyds and would be happy to share what I've found. I did several articles on the family of Robert H. Boyd (son of Hugh)who married (1) Chloeretta Gray, (2) Martha Osborne Wagner, and (3) Martha McRae. (All that is documented with court records and censuses.) I also have proof that Rosanna, daughter of Hugh, married William Boyd, son of Robert and Rosannah Stewart Boyd. And, of course you know I believe Rosanna and William were first cousins. Not proved but lots of evidence. I also have a theory on Jeannett (Harper?) "Muffitt" Boyd which I would like to toss out for discussion. I believe Jeannette was married to the Moffett second (after Hugh died) instead of before. That would make her Jeannette Harper (?) Boyd Moffett. The questions come from Matthew Boyd's will where he leaves part of his estate to the children of his half-brother, William Moffett, who, if the general current info is correct, would be older than Matthew. We don't know Matthew's year of birth but we do know that he was the oldest son of Hugh and Jeanette (mentioned as such in Hugh's will). We also know that Hugh's son, John Montgomery Boyd, was born in 1776, because it is on his gravestone in Boyd, Alabama. Therefore, Matthew must have been born before 1776. Let's say he was born in 1774, going on the usual span between children at that time. That means that William Moffett, the half-brother, would be born before 1774 if Jeannette were married to the Moffett before Hugh. (Are! you still with me?) Annual returns dated 1837 on Matthew Boyd's estate names these children and says they are all "infants." (Matthew died in 1835 but made his will in 1834.) Quoting a passage from Sandra Lee's book, "Newberry County, SC Equity Records 1818-1844, Will Book M&N With Annual Returns, Will Book I, Miscellaneous Annual Returns, ?1985 by Sandra J. Lee, page 132: BOX 22, PACKAGE 4 "James Renwick, Adm. of Matthew Boyd dec vs Jacob Maffett and infants Sarah, Silas, Elizabeth, Margaret, Ann Emeline Maffet (Guardian Elijah Jenkins). Bill for direction and relief. Filed 6 July 1837. "Matthew Boyd died in 1835 with LWT 3 Sept 1834 in which he left real estate and two negroes to "children of my half-brother William Maffet." At the time the will was written, William Maffet had three children ... Sarah, Silas, and Elizabeth. Another child, Margaret, was born before Matthew Boyd died. Ann Emeline Maffett was born after Matthew Boyd died. The court decided all the children would receive an equal share." Further research shows that Sarah (Ann) was born 26 Nov 1826 (gravestone in Texas); Silas and Elizabeth both had to be born before 1834, Margaret was born between 1834 and 1835 (after the will but before Matthew died), and Ann Emeline was born after 1835 (after Matthew died). If their father, William Maffett, sired them, and he was born in 1772 (or maybe before), then he would be nearly 70 years old and not likely to be having young children. However, if he was born AFTER Hugh died (after 1899), then he would be a more reasonable age to be having young children. Not hard proof, but certainly reason for doubt and cause to take another look. I think he was more likely born about 1800. So ... thoughts anyone? Judy in Newnan, GA

    1. Re: [BOYD] John Montgomery Boyd was (not) Newberry to Meriwether Boyds
    2. Rhonda, The John Montgomery Boyd I referred to, the son of Hugh and Jeannette (spelled many ways) Boyd of Newberry, was born 1 Nov 1776 and died 4 Sep 1854. He was married to Jennett (Jane) Dial. He is buried in the Boyd Cemetery in Sumter County, AL, near Boyd, AL. He was never in Meriwether County, GA. I have not personally been to the cemetery but was given the information from someone who had, Liz and Ray Dial, of Temple, GA. Ray and I are related through three lines ... Boyd, McWhorter and Payne. I was using John Montgomery's birth year as a measuring stick to determine approximately when Matthew, his older brother, was born. There is also a younger John Montgomery, the above J.M.'s son, who is said to have died in Texas. I have not taken the Boyd line out in detail any farther than John Montgomery the elder because it is a collateral line for me and they were not in Georgia. I have sort of limited my boyd research to those who were in Georgia at some time. The only other son of Hugh and Jeannette whose birth year is known for sure is Robert H., Boyd, born in 1791 (from Bible records) who died in Meriwether County. Rosanna Boyd Boyd, a daughter (who died in Carroll County, GA), is a guesstimate of 1798, based on censuses. I have no concrete birth year for Matthew, Jane (Campbell), or Hugh, the other children of Hugh and Jeannette. I have been out of the genealogy loop for several years because of health problems. This is the first summer since 2006 I haven't been on an operating table somewhere having something cut off, cut out, or rerouted. :-) Not funny, I know, but better to laugh about it than cry over something you have no control over. I know a lot more research has been done on this line since 2006. I'm just trying to add what I have done to the pile and to catch up on what I've missed. Any help will be appreciated. I do have many copies of court documents on Boyds in Meriwether County and I am willing to share that information. If Mike doesn't already have it, I know he can probably use it.
