Before our meeting at Las Vagas, David Boyd of Maryland, was telling me about Chief John Boyd - I think he said he was a "Souox (?)" Indian Chief from North Dakota - and his descendants who were on an Indian Reservation in North Dakota. He said these descendants were blue eyed and not like the normal "Indians" on the reservation. He thought that during the 1800's when cattle were driven from Texas up North to help feed the various Indian Tribes that perhaps a Mr Boyd might stayed after the cattle drive and married an Indian lady. So if any of our Texas Cousin have an John Boyd missing this might be were he finished up. I also discussed with him that this John Boyd might have been an Indian Agent who finished up living with the Indians on this reservation. Or there could have been some other reason for this Chief to be called John Boyd. So are there any members of this list from Dakota, whom may be able to add any information to this small puzzle? David, can you provide a better outline of this story please. Thank you. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Mike, Thank you for the Chief Boyd plug. He was a Sioux Chief and fought at The Battle of the Little Bighorn, with Chiefs' Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, (i.e. Custer's Last Stand). The Native Americans won that round but were dispersed into Canada where Chief John Boyd stayed until re-entering the USA with amnesty into north-eastern Montana around the Poplar Bluff and Wolfe Point areas. I met his grand daughter who had married a Gros Vant from the Fort Belcourt Reservation and was then living on the Blackfeet Reservation in Browning, MT. I was the Surgeon for the Blackfeet Nation at that time (1993-2006). Prior to that I was working on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation, in south central South Dakota (1991-93). It was here that I came across a sizable Boyd family. They were fairly prosperous cattle ranchers, as were several other "anglocised" surnamed Sioux families i.e., Williams, Johnson etc. These family surnames apparently originated also from the Texas Cattle Drover source. I have recently contaced one great-grandchild of Chief John Boyd and will pursue this source. Any help or suggestion is welcome. Thank You.
