I was recently sent a query which said "James Boyd of Killockthorn who married in 1655." I have checked both my maps of Scotland put could not find this name or any similar name listed. I have also looked at the 1691 Hearth Tax list for Ayrshire but again I could not find any similar name. There were a number of John Boyd's in this 1691 Hearth Tax list for Kilmarnock but none under such a name. The name Killockthorn has not come up in George Robertson's books or James Paterson's books either. Do any members of the Ayrshire list know of an place called Killockthorn or perhaps an Estate called that? With James Boyd marriage in 1655, this would suggest that if he is linked to the Chief of the Boyds that his link could go back to the 6th Lord Boyd, who had several sons whom we do not know what happened to them. The 7th, 8th and 9th Lord Boyds only had one son plus a number of daughters. We do not get to any more of the chief's sons until the 10th Lord Boyd and first Earl of Kilmarnock whose sons were born in 1660's and 1670's.
