When I was in one of the Libraries in California in October 2010, I found a book on Bells. One section has a large for Captain Robert Bell (1722-1816) m (first) Catherine Walker ( - 1770) and (second) Mary Boyd. The was no date for the second marriage but I would estimate from the children's birth in the second marriage, that this took place about 1774. "A native of Caswell County, NC, Robert Bell had moved to Guilford County prior to the Revolution and settled "about nine miles" from Guilford Courthouse. He married Catherine Walker, probably in the early 1760's, and had become the father of six children before his wife died early in the 1770's. He later married Mary Boyd and sired thirteen more children. Following the Revolution, he and his brother Samuel joined the throng of emigrants who moved into central Tennessee. Robert's first home in Tennessee is said to have been north of the Cumberland River. Captain Bell was given a North Carolina Land grant for 2,568 acres in Tennessee." I know when I was sorting these papers that I saw a son or grandson married a daughter of Daniel Boone. I have not had time to go back to find this specific reference to find out where this marriage took place. Because Captain Bell was living in Guilford County, NC, it would SUGGEST that this Mary Boyd was from the family of one of the two Sons of George Boyd of Chester Co., PA who had moved to the Dan River at South Boston in the 1740's. So if there are any members of the list that have a Mary Boyd marrying Robert Bell in the 1770's in NC, I would like to hear form your please. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Dear Mike, I do not know who Mary Boyd was, but I can tell you that the children, at leasst some of them, are to be found in Davidson and Williamson Cos., TN. Some of them married into my Edmondson family. Samuel, a son of Robert Bell's first wife, was the father of Sen. John Bell, who ran for president in 1860 but was defeated by Lincoln. A son of Mary Boyd, David, married anEdmondson and I have some descendants in my files. I think there is another marriage, but cannot find it right now. Best, Howard V. That would have been Sutro Library, San Francisco. Part of the California State Library system and one of the best Genealogical collections in the State.
