Mike Boyd visited Troy, OH from April 19th through the 22nd, and presented his history talk on the 20th from 6 to 9:00 pm at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center. There were nine people in attendance, several of which were BOYD researchers. The others came to gather and learn general genealogical info. Most considered themselves fairly experienced, but Mike was able to ask questions and get them to think and delve deeper. Before and after the meeting Mike spent much of his time at the Local History Library in Troy where he connected with the curator, Patrick Kennedy, and found leads on a great many Boyd families with Miami County, OH connections. Mike spent several days staying with Marla Fair and her husband, David, in their townhouse located on the public Square in Troy, OH, which is a historic community with many of its downtown buildings dating to the 1840s. Marla and Mike spent hours asking and answering questions concerning her own Boyd connection; the mysterious William Boyd whose wife, Nancy Cain (or Kane) Boyd, left him and went to America taking their 4 year old daughter Margaret Boyd with her. Thanks again to Mike for coming to the Dayton area and for sharing his extensive knowledge. Marla Fair, Troy, OH Hi, Today Mike Boyd visited Grand Rapids, Michigan and gave his history talk to a goup of 10 people. It was the perfect way to spend a cold rainy day. Mike talked for almost 4 hours, sharing the history of the Boyd family and also giving advice to individuals about how to research their own line. Even though we had a mix of novice and experienced family historians, I think that everyone learned something new...I know I did! It was a very successful meeting and we are thankful to Mike for making Grand Rapids a stop on his tour. After his talk, we went out for lunch with Roger Moffat of the Western Michigan Genealogical Society. The WMGS co-sponsored Mike's talk by helping with advertising and provided a lovely room for us to use. Roger Moffat is responsible for the genealogy portion of the Moffat Clan website and we talked quite a bit about how to use their technology to get Mike's vast records onto a website for all to use. My husband Clint and I were very excited about taking on that challenge and will be discussing it further with Mike. I highly recommend that you try to attend one of Mike's talks if you have not done so before. After researching our Boyd line for 10 years, I thought that I knew a lot about the Boyd history. But, Mike amazed us all with his wealth of knowledge and the way that he was able to cite so many dates and names without using notes. After listening to Mike, I have some new ideas of where to look next with our research. Hi all Wow what a weekend. Meet Marla in Ohio and traveled with Mike to Western Pennsylvania. We were lucky and spent one day in the Washington County, PA library, one day in the Elizabeth Historical Society and Monessen Library Meeting. Easter day in deep discussion over the information we had found and their connection to the various Boyds. We collected alot of information that has to be sorted out too. My family was amazed at our conversations over the Boyds. Mike and Dave left Pennsylvania to travel to Pikeville, KY today.
