It sounds so similar to my line. However, according to our records (and census records 1840 and 1850), my great great great grandfather was "Captain" Charles Boyd, born in New Jersey, married Susan Carpenter (whose brother, W.H.H. Carpenter, married Jane Todd, a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln). Among their children were John L. "Tip" Boyd, born in Kentucky, and William Thomas "Gid" Boyd, born in Illinois in 1848. Another son, Charles U. Boyd, is my great great grandfather. "Captain" Charles Boyd is as far back as I have been able to find for sure (though we think his father's name was William).
