If any member of this list is also on the Culbertson and/or Culberson Net list I would be grateful if you post this message to that list please. During my trip to the USA in April and May this year I found these two books on the Culbertson and Culberson families at the Troy, Ohio:- A) Genealogy of the Culbertson and Culberson Families, Revised Edition, Lewis R. Culbertson, 1923 B) Four Families - Cory, Culbertson, Smith, Gahagan, by Hannah M Gahagan, (before 1966). >From the book The Descendants of the Robert Boyd and the Charles Boyd Families of Chester County, South Carolina, by Max Perry, 1987, it tells us that Captain Robert Boyd of Cumberland Valley, PA came to the USA in about 1737. He was born in Scotland (his son John is the only one of the 8 children whom had a place of birth - Irvine in about 1725 - so Mike Boyd THINKS that this Robert Boyd [who is different to the shipmaster Robert Boyd] also came from this part of Scotland where there were plenty of Boyd families) to North Ireland and then to Province of Pennsylvania. Max Perry list this Robert Boyd's first child as:- "I. Margaret Boyd, m Capt Alexander Culbertson, b 1721, Ireland, d. killed 21 June 1776, Revolutionary War, Canada, Isle Aux Neix. A. Samuel Culbertson, b 1745 B. Robert Culbertson C. Alexander Culbertson D. John Culbertson E. Joseph Culbertson, b 1753, Franklin Co., Penn F. James Culbertson" And Max does not provide any more data on this family. >From Lewis R. Culbertson's book, page 135, it says:- "(E) Capt. Alexander Culbertson, of Lurgan Tp. Cumberland Co., PA, emigrated to America between 1730-35, from Ballymoney, Co., Antrim, Ireland ("Irish Row"). He settled about six miles from the town of Chambersburg, PA - his cousin, Joseph, came over in 1743 - and his farm and that of his two brothers and cousin together with the farms of their children, were called "Culbertson Row". In 1755 Alexander Culbertson was commissioned Captain in Col. Burd's Regt. of PA Provincial Troops in the French and Indian War. (see PA Arch. N. Ser. Vol. 11, p. 519). In April 1756, he was a captain in Lieut. Col. Armstrong's Regt. (Second) of PA. Prov. Troops and was killed near McCord's Fort, April 2, 1756." While on page 136, it says:- "(E) Capt. Alexander (Irish) married Margaret (there is a record which gives her name Mary Duncan, b Mar. 15., 1725, in Lancaster Co., PA. d. Aug. 3. 1794, married Nov. 4 1740 in Lancaster Co., PA.) this is an error as his wife's first name was Margaret - whether Margaret Duncan I could not state. Alexander's administrator's - Joseph Culbertson and Margaret Stuart were appointed in March 1757. Joseph was appointed gd'n for Samuel and Alex. minors and James Breckenridge gd'n for Robert in 1758. In May, 1763, James, son of Alex. dec'd, being 14 years of age, chose N. Wilson as guardian. Chas. Stuart was appointed guardian of John and Joseph being under 14 years of age. Margaret, widow, had remarried by or before March 1757, Capt. Alexander's widow remarried before 1758 to John Stuart as shown by the following Release of Dower, 'John Stuart and Margaret his wife, being the relict of Alexander Culbertson, dec'd, late of Letterkenny Tp., Cumberland Co., PA, who said John Stuart has intermarried, in consideration of 60 pound paid by Alex's eldest son, Samuel, do hereby release all claim on the estate of Alexander Culbertson. Made 1765, Recorded 1795,' Capt Alex. had two other warrants one of which was in Cumberland Valley Tp. Bedford Co., PA" While on page 137 it lists these children for Capt Alexander Culbertson:- "Issue: I. Samuel (Col.) b. Dec 21 1741; d Feb 4, 1817, II Robert (Col) b. ---, 174-; d -----. III Elizabeth (Mrs Col Chas Cessna), b Jan 31, 1747; d. ----- IV James b. 1748-9; d 1805. Capt ("Baron James"), V Alexander, b 1750; d Dec 13, 1822. Tanner, VI John b 1753; d. Nov 1844. Lieut. VII Joseph, b 1755-6; d 1776 (Killed, Three Rivers, Canada March 1776), Ensign So are these two Alexander Culbertson families the same? They have the same names for the six sons. But the date of death for Capt Alexander Culbertson differs - with 1776 in Max Perry's book and 1756 in Lewis R. Culbertson's book. This migration path back from before the Cumberland Valley, PA in 1735 was from Ballygan townland, in the Parish of Ballymoney, County Antrim Ireland. Ballygan townland is about 4 1/2 kms west of Ballymoney. It is just east of Macfin where Boyd families came from and just south of Ballywindelland where some other Boyd families lived. I know that there Culbertson families in and around Kilmarnock and Fenwick in Ayrshire but I have no knowledge if those from Ballygan came from Ayrshire or not in Scotland. At this time I can't say if the family of Captain Robert Boyd, whom we only know came to Cumberland Valley in about 1737 from North Ireland, and that his son John was said to have been born in Irvine Ayrshire in 1725, knew the Culbertson family in Ireland before coming to Cumberland Valley. If you have any information on this Culbertson family, I would like to hear from you please, so I can confirm that Captain Alexander Culbertson's wife was Margaret Boyd, daughter of Captain Robert Boyd.
