    2. Mike Boyd
    3. On our way from Greensboro, NC to Knoxville, TN on Sunday 1 May 2011, Michelle Ligon and I stopped to talk to a group of Boyds at Dan & Betsy Boyd, Boyd Mountain Log Cabins, 445 Boyd Farm Road, Waynesville, NC 28785 (Take Exit 20 on I-40 going west from Asheville, NC to Knoxville, TN down the Jonathan Creek Road Highway and turn right into Hemphill Road.) - with Michelle's little direction box getting us lost in Waynesville, but I will let her tell that story. After this talk Betsy Boyd gave me an outline of her husband's Boyd family. This starts with:- A) Robert Boyd, who had; B) Robert Boyd, b 1801, who married Elizabeth Garrett, dau of William Garrett and Elizabeth Harrison [niece of President Harrison), who had; C) Dr T. J Boyd, who married Ester Ferguson, who had; D) David Rule (?) Boyd, who married Kate Moody and secondly Oralie Ferguson and had; E) Dock Boyd, who married Louisa Medford and had; F) Nichael (?) Daniel Boyd in 1943 Betsy said that this Boyd family had come from Buncombe Co., NC. The following day when I was at the Knoxville Library with Kathy Manning, I was going though, some of the County History books looking for known Boyd families when I found in The Heritage of Old Buncombe County, North Carolina, Volume II, 1987, Doris Cline Ward, editor, page 102 which outlined the family of James Boyd and Rachel McGill. "James Boyd was born in Ireland on February 4, 1769. The first record of him in Buncombe County, NC is in 1806 when he purchased 50 acres on Bee Tree Creek. Some family members believe he, along with two brothers, John and David, came to America by way of Charleston, South Carolina. ... "James married Rachel McGill in Lincoln County, NC on December 18, 1794. Rachel was also born in Ireland on May 29, 1769. Most of their lives were spent in an area known as Sandy Mush Creek, now a part of Madison County, NC. Family historians and the will of James Boyd identify only two children, James Berny Boyd and Robert McGill Boyd. ... "(2) Robert McGill Boyd, born October 23, 1800, and died 1884, married Elizabeth Garrett (1812-1904) of Buncombe County. They had the following nine children: William J Greenberry Boyd, born 1834, never married; Rachell McGill E. Boyd, born 1835, married Dr Samuel L. Love; Frank Alexander M Boyd, born 1837, married Sallie Parks; Margaret Mary I. Boyd, born 1838, died young; Doc J Thomas Boyd, born 1841, married Esther Ferguson; John Henry H. Boyd, born 1843, married 1st Rebecca J. Brown and 2nd Sarah R. Plott; David Larry S. Boyd, born June 9, 1845, married Belle (M. L.) ..." [It seems that I did not copy the next page - 103] - to provide the name of the remaining children and how supplied the data for this entry.] If as this submitter, thinks that this James Boyd landed at Charleston, SC, who did he get to Buncombe Co., NC? Did he come up one of the rivers? If so, which one? If your family belongs to any of these children listed, the list, Dan & Betsy Boyd and I will be quite glad to hear from you about this family. When I was in the Knoxville, TN Library I am sure that I found some information that said that the father "James Boyd" came from County Tyrone, Ireland. That might be in one of the envelopes I have yet to sort. When I sort those papers I will let the list know if this is where James Boyd came from in Ireland. Thank you ? 2. John Boyd
    3. Found the following on Ancestry.com: James Boyd was born in Ireland, 4 February, 1769; the first record of him in Buncombe County, NC, is in 1806, when he purchased 50 acres of land on Bee Tree Creek. Some family members believe he came to America with two brothers (John and David) by way of Charleston, South Carolina. Family stories have it that John Boyd resided in Mecklenburg County, NC and David Boyd moved to Texas. An earlier version is that James was the son or brother of William Boyd who purchased land in Buncombe County between 1790 - 1796. My research and theories are that he came to America with his two brothers by way of South Carolina settling in Buncombe County; where he married Rachel McGill in Lincoln County, NC, 18 December 1794, Rachel was born in Ireland, 29 May 1796. Their lives were spent raising their family in and around the Sandy Mush Creek Community now a part of Madison County, NC. Family historians, family Bibles, land records, and James' Will identify only two children, James Berry Boyd (our ancestor) and Robert McGill Boyd. Although the Boyds came to the Colonies from Ireland, in my research I have found many Boyds in Scotland; it is possible that the family immigrated to Ireland from Scotland. I will be researching this in the near future. I found an article written by Edna Roten (1980)(a Boyd descendent) "Biographical Sketch of DFJ Boyd (Doctor Fitzhugh James Boyd)"; in which Ms Roten states: "The early history of the Boyd's arrival in America records that James Boyd, John Boyd, and David Boyd came from the west side of Lough Leagh in Northern Ireland. The Boyd's had probably migrated from Southern Scotland to Northern Ireland during the reign of King James I; with other colonists who came to the area that was orginally part of the Hugh O'Neil lands." Ms Roten also agrees that the three brothers must have immigrated to America by way of Charleston, as I have stated above. She also states further; "James Boyd came to Sandy Mush, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA. He and his wife are buried there and there is a monument erected at their graves in the cemetery at the Sandy Mush Baptist Church. Member Name: dmdrozic from Kingman, AZ.
