Rebecca I think that you will need to look at what Americans used in 1850 for Ireland, Scotland, England, etc not what we may call these Countries today. I THINK THAT IF THEY LEFT from Belfast you could be 99% sure that both William and Jane came from Ireland and not from Scotland. Glasgow, was the second most commercial City in the UK and so would have had quite a lot of shipping of its own going to North America for cotton, tabbacco, etc. They may have come from Wigtonshire or one of the other SW Scottish Counties, as Belfast would have been closer than Glasgow and therefor cheaper to get an ship So go through all the US sources that you can think of, to see what place of birth they may have for both of them. Take a look to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_britain> for more information. Apparently it is stated that Great Britain is the Island on which Scotland, Cornwall, Wales and England are located. The Isle of Alba. Census work should provide more clues before you are jumping off in *any* country looking for William Boyd.... Jane is just as common a name. Kind of like a search for John Smith or Jane Doe! However, I suspect you will find "Scotland" as the response for Jane's place of birth on the census.
