"Betty" was born on February 4, 1924 in Oak Park, Illinois to William and Marie Darrah. She attended elementary through high school in Oak Park, Illinois, graduating in 1941. Elizabeth attended De Pauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and graduated from the University of Illinois <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/university-of-illinois/?personid=151355508&affiliateID=1434> at Champaign Urbana in 1945 with a degree in journalism. While in college, Betty met an engineering student named Hugh T. Boyd, and they were married on May 17, 1946, in Oak Park, Illinois. The young couple then moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where Hugh was employed by the Missouri Highway Department and Elizabeth worked for a local newspaper. In 1949, Hugh took a civil engineering position in Chicago, and they moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, where they lived for many years and raised three children. Elizabeth became very active in the Elmhurst Methodist Church and was involved with the Elmhurst Children's Theatre and the American Association of University Women. She enjoyed sewing, baking and gardening. After Hugh's passing in 1979, Betty moved to Colorado Springs to live closer to her daughter. In Colorado Springs, she was involved with the local chapter of the Audubon Society and enjoyed many birding trips, Christmas bird counts, bridge clubs and book clubs. Elizabeth is survived by her children, Patricia Boyd Ward of Raleigh, North Carolina, Thomas A. Boyd of Encinitas, California, and Jan Boyd Haring of Cascade, Colorado. Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in the Lehmberg Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs. Interment was held in Elmhurst, Illinois.
