I have been kicking this theory around for a while, trying to break through the Robert Boyd of Statesville, NC block. Based on some of Mike's recent posted hunches etc, this is what I am thinking (and need the data to back it). Robert Boyd (III) [1728-1806], who married & Eleanor McCulloch (whose father may have been a tailor in PA), was the son of: Robert Boyd (II) [1697-1754] & Alice NOTE of INTEREST: Information from Page 50-51 of the Christian County Kentucky Family History Book..... not sure when it was published or by whom. Covers many of the leading families in the county. Early in the 18th century, George Boyd and his wife, Isabella, arrived in the Lancaster/ Chester area of Pennsylvania. They came from County Antrim, Ulster in northern Ireland. There were 5 sons, George, Jr., Patrick, John, James and Robert. After George Sr's death in 1731 and the settlement of his estate, George Jr. stayed in Pennsylvania while his four brothers went south to Halifax County, Virginia and Granville County, North Carolina. Here they all bought land, built homes, and proceeded to rear large families. As new lands opened up, some of their sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons began to move away. By mid 19th century, there were branches of the family living in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Seven of the families came to the Christian/ Trigg County area of Kentucky. Five of Patrick's grandsons came. To Christian County came Aaron, Francis, and David. Abner had lands in both Trigg and Christian Counties. To Trigg came Archibald (Archer) Boyd. John Boyd had a grandson named Roy. Although it is believed that Roy did not come to Kentucky, it is believed that his widow and all of his children came. Records of the settlement of his estate exist in both Halifax County, Virginia and Trigg County, Kentucky. Robert Boyd had a grandson named Thomas (son of Robert III, who eventually settled in Callaway Co, MO via Trigg Co, KY). After his death, his wife and their four children came to Trigg County, Kentucky. Robert II was the son of: Robert Boyd (I) [1678-1743] & Elisabeth 'Jennet" Johnston NOTE of INTEREST: 1718, Ulster - A group of Scottish citizens who lived in the North of Ireland in 1718, petitioned then New England Governor, Col. Samuel Shute, for encouragement to come to America. In the list of 309 signers appears the name of Boyd nine times as follows: Robert Boyd, Samuel Boyd, William Boyd, William Boyd, John Boyd, William Boyd, Thomas Boyd, John Boyd and Robert Boyd. From the History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, page 23: To His Excellency, the Right Honorable Colonel Samuel Shute, Governor of New England. We whose names are underwritten, inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, do in our own names, and in the names of many other our neighbours, gentlemen, ministers, farmers, tradesmen, commissionate and appoint our trust and well-beloved friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd, of Macasky, to his Excellency the Right Honroable Colonel Samuel Shute, Governor of New England, and to assure His Excellancy of our sincere and hearty inclination to transport ourselves to that very excellent and renowned Plantation, upon our obatining from His Excellency suitable encouragement; and further, to act and do in our names as his Prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Anno Dom 1718. There are also signatures for Alexander Blair, John Blair, Hugh Blair, Joseph Blair and William Blair. This information obtained from Reverend J.W. (Bill) Dupree, of Valdosta, Georgia who was a frequent correspondent of my Aunt Gail Dunham in their mutual search for their ancestors. Immigrated in 1730. Robert I was son of: Rev. Adam Boyd (II) [1650- ] & Agnes Forsythe NOTE of INTEREST: Rev. Adam's grandson, Adam Boyd IV, came from Ballymoney, Ireland, in 1692, and came to New England as a probationer in 1722 or 1723. He was received under the care of New Castle Presbytery in July, 1724. He accepted a call to the churches of Octorara and Pequea, and was ordained, October 13th, at Octorara. In October, 1727, the families on the west side of the stream Octorara having asked for one-third of his labors, he was directed to spend every sixty Sabbath at Middle Octorara. The Forks of Brandywine composed part of his field until 1734. In the progress of the great revival, a large portion of his congregation having left him and joined the Brunswick brethren, he asked leave, August 11th, 1741, to accept the invitation given him by the fraction of Brandywine which adhered to the Old Side. His relation to the Forks was dissolved in 1758. He died November 23d, 1768. Mr. Boyd was a man of great exactness, recording in what articles his salary was paid; thus John Long paid by publications (as a magistrate) of marriages and astrays, and by a riddle. His congregation agreed to pay him twenty-five pounds yearly during his life and several of them remembered him, in their dying testaments, by small bequests. Robert Boyd II followed Rev. Adam Boyd, his cousin, and was a member of the congregation in Octorara. Rev. Adam Boyd II was the son of: Capt. Adam Boyd (I) [1623-1649] & Mary Boyd NOTE of INTEREST: Captain in the army sent by Charles I (reign 1625-1649) to Ireland. Capt. Adam Boyd I was the son of: Bishop Andrew Boyd [1569-1639] & Elizabeth Conygham NOTE of INTEREST: Peerage records seem to miss Andrew when listing the descendants of Thomas Boyd, but other common records, particularly ecclesiastical, talk about Bishop Boyd note he is the "natural son" of Lord Boyd. Bp. Andrew Boyd was the son of: Thomas Lord Boyd [1547-1611] & Margaret Campbell
Just a note to say that the Robert Boyd who was a ember of the Upper Octorara church in sadsbury Township, cheste Co. PA, was not anyof the Roberts mentioned in this message. He is my ancestor, and he bought land there in 1726. His wife was Jennet, maiden name unknown. He is buried in the cemetery at Upper Octorara . His tombstone shows him born c.1678, d. 1743 He had for certain two sons, James and John, and probably a third, Rbrty, and perhaps other children. In a deed to his son John, he is labeled as a "taylor". Although I think he my have come with the rev. Adam Bpyd, I have seen no evidence that they were related, nor is there evidence that Bobert was related to amotjer boyd family at Upper Octorara. Robert's son John had asons Robert and Andrew, who left Chester Co. c.1763. They turn up in Iredell Co. NC, moving to KY and then TN in the 1780's. This Robert, wife Ann, died in davidson co. TN. in 1793 Andrew went to Maury Co. TN. Howard V.. Jones -------------------------------------------------- From: "Christian D.
