A headache indeed :) Ok so let me get this straight. Your ancestor line is Jane Boyd 1853 to William Boyd c1825 to Thomas Boyd c.1795. Where did William the father get married? So splitting families is extremely normal if not typical. "Usually" parents stay with 1 or 2 children. All the others emigrate. Scotland as a location for Jane's birth is most likely a work situation for her father. Happened all the time. Then you have a DNA link to John Boyd 1740 of Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland. Based on age, Thomas (c.1795) is likely a grandson or nephew of John of Ballymena. So researching John's sons and ALL his brothers would be the DNA matching. Remember the split can occur up the ancestor line, and the DNA still keep most of the matches. I would still focus my effort on Ballymena Boyd's and any proceeding John. Robert Boyd is Ruling Elder of the Presbyterian church in Ballymena in 1703. John Boyd left the Quaker meeting house in Ballymoney parish from Ballynacree townland and moved to Pennsylvania circa 1720s John Boyd is in Ballymena Town and Estate in the 1669 Hearth Money Rolls maybe you know this, but it seems you have legit family locations from which to focus your search. Hi everyone, I've been a member of this list for a couple of years and anxiously await each new thread hoping to recognize my Boyd names. Unfortunately it never happens. Now, through DNA testing on Ancestry and on GEDmatch I've been told I have a connection to a circle of people all descended from Samuel Boyd (1783 South Carolina) son of John (1740 Ballymena, Antrim Ireland). Still, after checking the trees of those people I find no record of my Jane Boyd (born 1853 Greenock Scotland) daughter of William Boyd (born about 1825 Antrim Ireland) son of Thomas Boyd (a labor/butcher who was deceased before 1857). I believe my research because I have located the following documents: William Boyd's 2 marriages and death record. (His death record shows a mother named Margaret McNeil however his 2nd marriage shows a different mother-Sarah McAlister) All other information matches including the street address in Greenock, Scotland and his father Thomas Boyd as well as both of his wives. Jane Boyd’s marriage. This shows William as her father and his first wife Jane Kane as her mother. I have never found her birth record. Any suggestions? Does anyone know if maybe Thomas (a butcher) could be a middle or nickname? Does it seem likely that a family would split up and have some stay in Ireland/Scotland while everyone else goes to Southern United States? Other than the connection through DNA I have no family history in Southern United States. This brick wall seems impossible :-( Susan Sent from my iPhone Susan Hemsley Cicala☎

Unfortunately, I do not know much about her. Ada Wylna Boyd married Fred Bennie Monroe Cooper. They lived in Jal, New Mexico. They had one daughter, Freda Clarrene Cooper ("Clarrene"). Wylna had tuberculosis and, after the birth of her daughter, she spent time at the tuberculosis sanatorium in San Angelo, Texas. I believe Fred and Wylna divorce, although it is possible they were only functionally divorced, not legally. Clarrene married Darwyn Bishop. They moved many times, eventually settling in Amarillo, Texas. They were married until Darwyn's early death. Clarrene never remarried or had any interest in remarrying. The couple had four children, Barton, Darla, Debra, and Clinton. Clarrene is still alive and lives independently. Barton had four children and now has one grandchild. Darla had two children and now has three grandchildren. Debra had three children. Clinton had three children. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sirs and madams, I wish to thank all of those who have replied to my email ref William and Thomas Boyd of Swansea NSW Australia however, I do not have a specific answer to my queries on these two brothers therefore I am assumimg that nobody find the answer. I was simply enquiring and hoping that I may be able to find out more about one of the brothers in particular and that is William who was my great grandfather. All that I received is all interesting and goes well into the background of the Boyds and this showed me much more that I knew bedfore but as stated I received nothing on my queston as to when these two brothers i.e. William and Thomas Boyd arrived in Australia and from where and when if known. I have not been able to find the answer to this question myself as yet and so I was hoping that someone could assist. Regards to all. Mike BOYD, Here is something for you. :) http://1915crewlists.rmg.co.uk/document/119345 Shannah TWISS overthepond648@gmail.com Canada
Hi Barry, The more emails I read on this subject the more I become confused over the issue. Much earlier on when I began tracing my Boyds, ( and William in particular as he is my great grandfather ), I was happy to think that what I was told was correct i.e. That William and brother Thomas migrated Australia and finally settled in Swansea, and incidentally they have three streets named for them in Swansea. i.e. Boyd, William and Thomas streets . Based on what I have read in various in emails from various sources this info has now put me in a complete dilemma, unless of course I am misreading some of these emails ref to ttrhesehese two Boyds. Incidentally my connection is this; My grandmother was born to William Boyd of Swansea NSW. ( William had a daughter named Maud Gertrude who was my grandmother ). Also I do not know who William Boyd married, I have no been able to find any info on this ??? I am just hoping that what you know about these two Boyds is in confirmation to what I have written here. Do you think that all of the underwritten is correct or could they have the wrong family ?? I am at the point if wether or not I go researching that which I have or do stop at this point ? In the book A Genealogical Account of the Principal Families in Ayrshire, more particulary in Cunninghame, Vol. I, George Robertson, 1823, page 131, it said: “XI. Grizel Boyle, who succeeded her father in Kelburn. She marired a near relative David Boyle of Hawkhill, descended from the family thus:- 1. John, second son of No IV. was designed “of Ballahewin” in 1536, married Christian, daughter of Wallace of Cairnhill, by whom he had a son, 2. David of Segdeth in 1578, who married Christian, neice of Lord Boyd, by whom he had, 3. James of Hawkhill, in 1617, who married Margaret, daughter of David Crawfurd of Bedland, by whom he had the above David Boyle of Hawkhill, three sons, and one daughter: 1. John; 2. James of Montgomerieston; 3. Patrick. The daughter was Grizel, and she was married to William Wallace of Shewlton. He died in 1672, and was succeeded by his eldest son, “ Mike Boyd’s notes:- (1) The date 1578. Is this the date that David of Segdeth was born or his marriage date? MY GUESS, from the way this is written, it is David’s date of birth. So do others agree or disagree! (2) “neice of Lord Boyd”. Is this term, as we understand it today, that she would be the daughter of this Lord Boyd’s brother or sister? Or could it mean that she was a more distant relative? This will need to be worked out to determine which Boyd Cadet Branch this Christian belonged to. (3) “David of Segdeth in 1578, who married Christian, neice of Lord Boyd”. The second problem is to determine WHAT TIME PERIOD we might be talking about. Is it 1578 – when it is assumed that David was born - or some later period when she was married in about 1615? (4) If the time period is 1578, this would mean that “Lord Boyd” was “Robert Boyd, fifth Lord Boyd, bc 1517, d 1589”. This Lord Boyd only had a sister, Margaret Boyd, whom Burke’s said married John Montgomerie of Lainshaw, the third son of the first Earl of Earl of Eglinton, eldest son John Montgomery. However, they did not have any children, so the “neice Christian” could not come from this Margaret Boyd. Or does it mean that this Lord Robert Boyd had more than one sibling? (5) However, if we are talking about 1615. This would put it in the period of the Robert Boyd, seventh Lord Boyd, (1595 – 1628), who succeed his grandfather. This Lord Boyd, is listed as only having a brother James Boyd who became the 9th Lord Boyd and he had no daughters that married a Boyle. So I can only conclude that this “neice Christian” was more distant than a single generation from which ever Lord Boyd was being referred to. (6) The next problem is Christian’s surname, Boyd or some other name? So are there any David Boyle of Segdeth (in 1578) researchers out there. (7) When I looked at the International Genealogical Index for the UK (1994 edition), I could not find any entry for a “Christian Boyd” even though there were entries for Christian Boyd prior to 1600 A. D. However, I did find few entries with Boyle. Katherine BOYD (F)......... During a recent visit to Edinburgh, Scotland, I found the family of William Boyd and Ann Cumming. However, there was no author and time period of when this research was undertaken. The only clue was that it is in handwriting – suggesting that this research might be over 50 years old. [For some unknown reason, Airth seems to have a number of Boyd families. However, their origins are not yet known. Nor is there any indication as to what religion this family might have been. The other Boyd family that is THOUGHT to have come from Airth, is the family of George and Isabella Boyd of Compass, PA – who settled there in about 1729 after coming from County Antrim and prior to there from Airth. George Boyd’s family were Espiscopal. Plus a Boyd family of Stepney, who were silk weavers and married into a Huguenot family.] “Family and descendants of William Boyd, farmer, parish of Airth in the County of Stirling, and Ann Cumming his wife, who were married 24th December 1773. 1. Recently when I was at the Burns Centre at Kilmarnock, I found a reference that said “Robert Boyd, Archbishop of Glasgow buried in the choir of the Cathedral and in the same sepulchre as Bishop Gavin Dunbar.” A few days later when I was in Glasgow, I went to the Cathedral and walked around the “PRESENT” choir area, but I could not see any Sepulchres, let alone one with his name on it. This burial took place in the early 1600’s, so when this reference was written was the Choir in a different place in the Cathedral? Or is this reference wrong an Archbishop Boyd was not buried in the Choir area of the Cathedral? As anyone got any information where he might be buried in Glasgow Cathedral? By the way, I think that Bishop Gavin Dunbar was a distant cousin. Thank you Mike boyd

Was in Glasgow in May if this year and went to Glasgow Cathedral looking for this grave. The church representatives on duty that day denied any knowledge of the Archbishop ' burial site. I gave up the search. Larry Horton
St. Andrews Society of New York, beginning in 1756, was group of Scotsmen who formed this Society, and was a branch from another Society started in the Carolinas before 1756. There are several Boyds is leadership roles on this Society, namely a James Boyd and James Boyd Jr. http://www.standrewsny.org/sites/default/files/files/History%20Book%20as%20of%2022609_reduced.pdf For the Boyd list, do any of you know if these Boyds belong to your family. For the Ayrshire list, this website might be useful to find your family who went to the USA, especially the New York State area. Does anyone know anything about the St Andrews Society of the Carolinas? Thank you Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.
Maiden Name; always a challenge 1. Did you view the marriage application? If so who else is listed? Often a woman's father or head of family will post the bond. most commonly someone from her family. 2. look for naming pattern particularly if you can isolate a ethnic or country dissension. Example first male child; first name of paternal grandfather and middle name the maternal maiden name 3 I am sure that you have looked at census, not only your gal, but those in close proximity and remain so through many census. Unfortunately this is too old for listing of household members where you might find an elderly person listed as 'Mother' or 'M-in-L'. 4 look to church records, posting of bands if there was well established church. Follow the records if the church was consumed or moved. 5 look at probates and land deeds. She may have come into an inheritance and is listed in a probate or Will. If you are really lucky, she did and the selling of the land required her signature. In that way you will find all members of the inheritance along with husbands and wives due to dower rights. 6 Look for the probate of her 1st husband's Will / property. An account of his death. 8 Did they have children? If so, his children may be named in her deceased husband's father's Will / probate; if they were minors, she may be mentioned. 7 what other families went from Chatham County, NC to Butler County, OH. Often migrations are done as families groups and you may find some things there. 8 what families were on the Chatham County NC 1790 census? Any given names pop out as her children's? Any of those family in Butler County, OH? 9 Where is her first husband buried? I doubt it was a churchyard, but if so, again look to church records or announcements. 10 was there a newspaper in the area at the time of her 1st husband' demise or even her marriage to the second husband. The latter may mention her maiden name. 11 was her first husband a veteran? Look for a pension application. Hopefully, somewhere in the above thoughts, you might find something helpful.
