I have forwarded this message to Harry Clyde who convened for Clan Hamilton for many years. He's moved. It may be a while before I hear something. Aye, Lauren
*I put all references to Kilmarnock in bold.* The forfeitures incurred in consequence of the rebellion of 1745 were much fewer and less important than those of 1715- Pitshgo, the prototype of the immortal Baron Bradwardine in ' Waverley, lost his title and estates, but succeeded in making his escape to the Continent. The Earl of Cromarty's life was spared out of compassion for his numerous family, but his associates— Lovat, *Kilmarnock,* and Balmerino— lost their lives as well as their titles and estates in the Stewart cause, and were the last peers who were executed in this country for treason. • Pitied by gentle minds, *Kilmarnock* died ; The brave, Balmerino, were on thy side.' King James IV., at that time a youth of sixteen years of age, had been induced to take part in the rebellion against his father, but as he grew older he felt deep remorse for having allowed himself to be made the tool of a selfish and unprincipled faction, and gradually withdrew his countenance from its leaders. It was probably the coldness with which he was now treated that induced Angus, the old intriguer and traitor to his country, to enter into a plot with Henry VII. of England against his youthful sovereign, and ultimately to withdraw for a season into England. Some knowledge of his treason had probably reached the King, for on the return of the Earl to Scotland he was committed a prisoner to his own castle of Tantallon, and, as the price of his pardon, was compelled to exchange the lordship of Liddesdale and the strong fortress of Hermitage, in the first instance, for the lordship of *Kilmarnock* ; but a few months later, Liddesdale and its stronghold were bestowed in fee and heritage on the Earl ol Bothwell, and Bothwell Castle, resigned by that nobleman, was given to Angus in exchange for *Kilmarnock*. This transference was a considerable diminution of the greatness and power of the Douglas family. Lord Macleod, who had fought gallantly along with his father at the head of their clan at the battle of Falkirk, was shortly after apprehended also, and the two were sent prisoners to London. The Earl was brought to trial for high treason on the 28th of July, 1746, along with the Earl of *Kilmarnock* and Lord Balmerino, and pleaded guilty, throwing himself on the mercy of the sovereign. He was condemned to be executed, and his honours and estates were forfeited. *Kilmarnock*, Earl of, forfeiture of his title and estates 4. *Notice the Boyd name is not mentioned. Isn't that interesting.* Awrabest, Cal Genealogist Emeritus House of Boyd (retired)
I've taken on the task of gleaning pertinent passages relating to the 4th Earl of Kilmarnock. I will post them shortly. Awrabest, Cal Genealogist Emeritus House of Boyd (retired)

In the above book it said:- “By Walter Stewart the lands of the barony were granted chiefly to the old rentallers, who thus became owners in fee of the properties on which they had resided. .. Among rentallers of noble rank are found successive generations of the families of Maxwell of Nether Pollock, Boyd of Kilmarnock, Colquhon of Elen, Stewart of Minto & Hamilton of Aikenhad It then goes onto list two pages of other names which do not include any of the above five families. I know that Boyds lived in “Glasgow” long before James VI reign, but I have not yet found any Boyd living across the river in Govan Parish.. So do any members of this list have family living in Govan Parish, Glasgow? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society

My commiserations. We in Scotland have been deluged with rain everyday since 1st October. With over 3 feet falling this month alone. Check the Internet for Storm Frank that hit yesterday. Mike, I am pleaded to report that this charming little thirteenth century chapel by the sea......STILL STANDS! There were apparently three ancient chapels in this area under the monks and parish of Kilwinning. The one in question is right in downtown West Kilbride: http://www.safhs.org.uk/burialground.asp?ID=2574 It is on Hunterston rd. a small almost alley like street on which the current Roman Catholic church is located. This charming little chapel is right across the street sandwiched in between Wallace and sons Motor Hire and a garage repairer across from a restaurant cafe called Romeo and Juliet. I found reference that there used to be two burial vaults here. The Hunterstons and Boyds of Portincross are said to have been buried there. Looking at it from Google Earth the whole block seems to be walled in around the old church and including the new catholic church complex and there is a burial ground also. I could find no reference to these bodies being moved so they should be still there. https://www.google.com/maps/place/55%C2%B041'44.8%22N+4%C2%B051'21.7%22W/@55.6957832,-4.8559543,146m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0?hl=en Also I might be inclined to take issue with the statement "It is known that Robert the Bruce gave the then Head of Clan Boyd these lands in 1306" . There are two charters from the first coronation 1306. One is for the lands of Kilmarnock to Robert which did, indeed become the clan head and was hereafter styled Robert Boyd of Kilmarnock. The other charter was to Robert of Noddsdale. This particular grant is a "confirmation" meaning that this Boyd family was already in possession of "Noddsdale" I do not believe these are the same person but rather may be cousins. In 1298 there were two known Boyds hung in the barn in Ayreshire during the burning of the barns By Edward the first. Duncan and Robert. I believe them to be aged brothers and that each of these men had sons that they named Robert. Thus we find Robert Boyd with Robert Bruce on the eve of the murder of the Comins at Greyfriars while at the same time we find Robert Boyd leading a group of McDonalds in the assault and retaking of Rothsey castle and securing the isles for the Bruce. These were two different Robert Boyds. Robert de Noddsdale, the progenitor of the Portincross Boyd and Robert of Kilmarnock who became clan chief. These were completely different families who sometimes inter-married until after the battle of Langside in the time of Queen Mary when Robert Boyd of Portencross sold the castle to Robert of Kilmarnock. This property on which Portencross sits was most likely originally granted By William the Lion to the grandfather of our deceased Duncan and Robert. We have no evidence of this other than the fact that the first charter for it from Robert Bruce is a "confirmation". But, yes. The church still stands and the bodies should still be there. I do not THINK it is the old Barony Church, (now used as a community hall) as it looks like it was built in the late 1700’s or 1800’s. So what site might have been used a a Church prior to the Barony Church? And does this site still exist in West Kilbride? During my recent trip to Scotland, I looked up the book A Genealogical Account of the Principal Families in Ayrshire More Particularly in Cunninghame, by George Robertson, Vol I, 1823 again Under Boyd of Portincross on page 112, it says “It is rather remarkable that, prior to the last mentioned date [1712], all the lairds of Portincross appear to have been of the name Robert: and this observation is corroborated by a tradition still remembered in the neighbourhood of ttheir ancient residence, the castle of Portincross, viz that fifteen individuals of that name and family were interred in one tomb, within the parish Church of West Kilbryde.” It is known that Robert the Bruce gave the then Head of Clan Boyd these lands in 1306, but it is not until 1372, or the 6th generation, that Robert Boyd is mentioned as being of Portincross. He was brother to Sir Thomas Boyd, third Feudal Baron of Kilmarnock. So we are looking at a period from 1372 to 1712. The term “one tomb, within the parish Church of West Kilbryde” Does the “within the parish Church” mean that this family were actually buried inside the Church? The second question is from 1372 to 1712, where was the Parish Church of West Kilbride? I do not THINK it is the old Barony Church, (now used as a community hall) as it looks like it was built in the late 1700’s or 1800’s. So what site might have been used a a Church prior to the Barony Church? And does this site still exist in West Kilbride? (Or will someone find a hole in their cellar, one of these days which has 15 bodies in it?) Thank you for any information Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.

Barry, That is a great list of the Boyds you have forwarded to me but I cannot lock into my grands' in this lot and but of course I am not saying they are not but I cannot see it. The more I read of the Boyds the more I become confused. The only "facts" I have is that William and Thomas Boyd resided in Swansea in NSW Australia. ( William being my great grandfather ). I know nothing of the backgropund of either Willaim or Thomas Boyd apart from that they were early settlers in Swansea NSW Australia. I know not where they originated as in were they English, Welsh or Scottish. I have found it very difficult to find this out however I would have as at a guess that they were English. ( ???? ). Of the info that you have forwarded I just can't seem to lock into my William and Thomas Boyd of Swansea NSW. I could ramble on all day with the wheres, hows and whys of this family but...........I won't. Just maybe you or someone else could assist me re William and Thomas Boyd as I have hit the proverbial brick wall. I had actually disregarded that entry, assuming it was made up, but it occurs to me now that maybe given I cannot find any strong leads for William Wilfred Boyd "sea captain", that maybe John Boyd in Aberdeen is actually her father.
