    1. Re: [BOYD] William Boyd of Swansea, NSW, Australia
    2. Hi Susan, Ancestry uses autosomal testing, which reaches across maternal and paternal lines so this is different than that of Y DNA testing. With that said, I would recommend autosomal testing as you may find some DNA cousin matches there that may correspond to your Boyd side whereby you can possibly learn more from them, if any of those people have tested who relate to you. >From there, it would take some research to compare notes with those matches to see who among those autosomal DNA matches are deriving from your Boyd side, particularly when primary source documentation is available from those matches that corresponds to your information and there being a DNA connection. So that can work potentially well with learning more on your Boyd line.... 2. Hi John, Y DNA is used for a male's direct paternal line only. 3. Mike, I don't know a great lot on this subject but do know that I am correct in saying that William Boyd, ( his wife was Eliza Freeman of Freemans Waterhole ), was my great grandfather, i.e his daughter Maud Gertrude Boyd was my grandmother and she in turn married Walter James. I do not have an exact birth year of William Boyd but Maud was born in Swansea in 1888. And yes I do believe from family talk, ( way way back ), that William Street and Thomas Streets in Swansea were named for these two Boyd brothers but that is probably not much use to you. Any further info on this Boyd family I may be able to assist with but I do not have a great lot. Further info is available on this but I first wish to know if this is the same William Boyd you are referring to. 3. Barry Is is a very good "version two" plan of when travelling to put some time aside to visit where your family came from. Folks, when you are going to travel for any reason, it is worth asking the list if any Boyds live in that area and if they can tell you what sources of family tree information there are available "in town" for the time you have to spare. Greenville Games are in late May each year and only held on a Saturday. But as there are about 60 Clan tents there, it is a good way to be able to contact spouse families to see if they might have information on your family. It will then give you a reason to call at your County Centre to find those missing pieces of information. Oh I have not got my maps sorted out form my move yet, but is Polk County TN in the Mountain County with the moonshine!!! If someone close can get started on this that would be great. I will be coming through Granville and New Boston on my way to the AGM in New Hampshire. This puts my arrival the week of september 11,12,13. I would love to meet any fellow Boyd researchers on the way. I also plan on one of those days being in Benton, Polk co, Tennessee. It is my plan to sort out some of the more confusing , unsorted Boyd families- specifically the Georges, Roberts, and Johns that so many of the Boyd family books have confused (Boyds Tank). I also plan on getting to the bottom of the Rae/Boyd DNA connection which I think happened in Pickens district South Carolina and should be reflected in the records. I will be nailing down the rout as we near the trip. I need a marriage proof to complete my American Boyd tree and I know it is in Halifax- but most of what I am seeking is in court records from Granville, co NC, and Danville, now Caswell County VA. So that I can tell the story of my Robert son of Robert and Lucretia oMally who settled after the war in Pickins district South Carolina. Also, the Pickens, SC courthouse is on my need to stop and research list if anyone is close to there for a meet up. If vacation time allows, I would like to stop in Lancaster Penn, the historical society there, on my way home September 19th and 20th. Barry in Dallas

    3. Members this is a list of Boyds in the NSW, Australia Census of 1828. However, it does not contain all the Boyds in NSW at this time, as my own family – who was a soldier is not included. This table included 11 columns. NSW in 1828 would only be about 1/10th of the present size of NSW today. Although it may have included the Penal colony of Moreton Bay – now Brisbane in Queensland – but it does not seem to have covered the Colony of Tasmania. So if your Boyds went to that Colony pre 1828, they would not be included in this list. My purpose in posting this is to tell you that such as list exists. And that if you have Boyds in England, Scotland or Ireland that might have “disappeared” in the early 1800’s, they might have been talking a holiday in Australia. But as you can see there is no indication FROM THIS LIST as to where they might have come from. The second purpose, is that this list and any other list of Boyds NEED TO BE TURNED INTO FAMILY CHAPTERS IN CLAN BOYD OF SCOTLAND, to help build the Clan Boyd Pyramid. So hopefully over time, with your help, we can turn each of these names into a family chapter. The same with any other list of Boyds – such as the 1790 US Census, the DAR Patriot Index- shipping lists, etc Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS LIST OF BOYD'S IN 1828 NSW CENSUS Name First Age F/B Ship Year S R Occupation Employer or Residence Remarks Boyd William 27 GS Mangles 1818 L P Messenger Road Party - 15 Parramatta Boyd Charles 17 GS John 7 C Servant Rev. 1. [BOYD] Planning to do research in Greenville, Greenville County, SC in 2016
    2. Mike Boyd via
    3. As many of this list will know that in many of the North West Counties of there are quite a lot of separate Boyd families. So could I suggest at at the end of May – when the Greenville Games are held – that you may wish to go to these to visit the Boyd tent and the other 60 or so Clan tents to look for spouse families for the Saturday. Then either before or after – perhaps after might be better as you will know more then – visit the County in NW South Carolina that your family came from. You will need to visit the town they came from and the County seat for their Libraries and County records. You will also need to check with the Libraries and records Offices that you wish to go to that they are open on the days you wish to attend. You may also need to plan a few days at the State Library and Archives at Columbia as well. This may need a return trip to the County to follow up on married families besides Boyd, where daughters have married, etc Good hunting Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

    3. Members 1) There is "debate" if Princes Mary was forced to get a Divorce from Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran or if he died in 1474 and she "forced" or "encouraged" Lord James Hamilton. (I have yet to find a date for this second marriage.) 2) This Lord James Hamilton NEVER became Earl of Arran. His son and Heir became the Earl of Arran in 1506. (Sorry, I can't cite the source of the top of my head) 3) I have yet to find out why this title was given in 1506. Mike Boyd PS if any member of this list is also a member of the Hamilton rootsweb.com Net list, they might be able to which way the story goes from their side. -----Original Message----- From: Cal boyd via Sent: Tuesday, January 5, 2016 3:43 PM To: BOYD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOYD] References to Kilmarnock Another thing that stirred things up was the marriage of Lord Boyd's son to the Kings sister, Mary. He was created the first Earl of Arran. When the Boyds fell from favor Mary was "forced" to marry a Hamilton and he was given the title Earl of Arran. 3. Cal, If there is no notification of the Boyd line as you have mentioned does that mean that Boyds of Kilmarnock never existed "as such" or did something else take place to render the Boyds of the title of Earl of Kilmarnock. It's interesting reading but now of course it make me wonder if there ever was a Boyd who was Earl of Kilmarnock ??? 1. Re: [BOYD] References to Kilmarnock
    2. Warren Stoddart via
    3. Cal, It's interesting to note that where my Boyd brothers, William and Thomas, are mentioned that they are said to be from the Earl of Kilmarnock and yet I cannot obtain any trace of these two brothers elsewhere. So I know have to ask the question, and not being one to have searched the families past history, just where do I obtain the correct information on these two brothers considering that one, namely William Boyd, ( who was my great grandgfather ), settled in Swansea in NSW Australia. Or am I researching the incorrect William and Thomas Boyd ?? I have taken note that you have said that the name BOYD was not mentioned so this now leaves me in wonderment ??? I now ask the question; the William and Thomas Boyd who were earlier settlers in Swansea NSW Australia the same brothers that you have mentioned in you email ? I have no doubt that they are and yet I do not have any background on them prior to Swansea NSW Australia. I have researched Australian records and can find nothing on them. There is no doubt that you are correct in what you say but I have that gap in my family tree which I am building that these two brothers arrived in Australia, ( year unknown ), and settled in Australia. What I do not have is their background IE their parents etc etc and location of where they resided. According to my grandmother they arrived as free settlers into NSW and settled in Swansea. My grandmother was Maud Gertrude Boyd daughter of William but I cannot find any record of this anywhere and so I have drawn the conclusion that she was never registered as a newborn. I have taken on board everything that you have told me which is absolutely brilliant however I still cannot trace William and or Thomas Boyd back any further than what you have mentioned. I am new at family research therefore I have probably missed a lot of info by not researching the correct areas so please excuse me for this. My only question I am really asking is " Where did the Boyd brothers come from originally " ?? Were they Scottish or English etc etc etc. Many thanks for that which you have forwarded me already. 1. [BOYD] Upper Octorara, PA, Churchyard
    2. Mike Boyd via
    3. It is known that at least two Boyd families are buried in the Upper Octorara, PA., Churchyard. Rev Adam Boyd’s family (who was minister of this Church for 30 or 40 years) and the family of Robert Boyd who died in 1743 and had a son James Boyd, who died in 1764 and married in the 1720’s, Jane/Janett Henderson, These two families do not appear to be closely related and are buried only a few rows apart. I am wondering if someone – who might live close to this Church or has visited it – could produce a “mud” map and list all these Boyd graves with their inscriptions so it could be used as an article for a future “Dean Road”? We know that Rev Adam Boyd came form Ballymoney, County Antrim, so I would not be at all surprised to find that Robert Boyd’s mihgt have come form northern County Antrim as well – where many Boyd families seemed to have settled. Thank you for volunteering Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS PS If anyone is on the Henderson named rootsweb.com Net list, you may wish to forward it into that list as well.

    3. All, I love this idea! 2. Cal boyd via
    3. Not mentioning the name Boyd in relation to Kilmarnock does NOT mean the Boyd line doesn't exist. The first Lord Boyd was also regent of Scotland until the King came of age. Lord Boyd was just a heartbeat from the Crown thus garnering him much animosity from the other nobles who conspired to have him over thrown. The fact that our titles are used without the name tells me there is still some animosity towards the Boyds at the time of authorship of the book. Another thing that stirred things up was the marriage of Lord Boyd's son to the Kings sister, Mary. He was created the first Earl of Arran. When the Boyds fell from favor Mary was "forced" to marry a Hamilton and he was given the title Earl of Arran. IF I have stated anything in error I hope that Lauren or Mike would correct me.
