His Social Security App has a father listed as Joy Boyd, Mother as Annie Ballew. 1910 Census records has his father listed as from Missouri. People have his father listed as Joseph H. Boyd 1849-1912. But I can find no actual documentation of this. Does anyone have anything on this and farther up the tree? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Where to did Edmund Boyd of Edgefield Co., SC come from before 1790? It is known that there is an Edmund Boyd listed in the 1790 Census for Edgefield County, SC. BOYD, Edmund SC Co: Edgefield Twp: Unknown This Edmund is thought to be the same person who married: - U1? Edmund Boyd, bc / /1755 ( , VA), d / /1800 ( ), bu , m / /177x (church, town, county, etc), Susannah Thurmond, dau of and (nee ) Thurmond, bc / /1755 ( ), d / /1846 ( ), bu , and had issue:- Edgefield County, SC would be at the “end” of the Great Wagon Trail from Pennsylvania, so you might expect either he or his parents also came down this route to Edgefield County, SC. He also would have been of military age to serve in the War of Independence, but I do not see him listed in the DAR’s 1990 Patriot Index. Recently I was given a family tree of Bill Boyd of Sacramento, CA, which provides a migration path for the Thurmond family before Edgefield County, SC. So “could” the Boyd family of Edmund Boyd have followed the same path? Robert* Edmund Boyd, son of Robert C Boyd Sr. and Lucretia Omery, was born about, 1758 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, USA. He died on 12 Jan 1800 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, USA (Title: Boyd's and Connected Families Early Settlers Central Savannah River Area of Georgia and South Carolina by John Wright Boyd, 1980. Text: Page 597-Edmund Boyd died between 1-12-1800 and 12-10-1800, when his will was probated.). He married Susannah Thurmond on 03 Apr 1785 in South Carolina, USA. Susannah Thurmond, daughter of John Thurmond and Elizabeth Goode, was born in 1766 in Albemarle, Virginia, USA. She died on 21 Sep 1846 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, USA. * This is the first time that I seem him called “Robert” Edmund Boyd, but he is not the son of Robert C. Boyd and Lucretia O’mery or O’mary. His parents are currently unknown. Susannah parents were:- John Thurmond, son of Phillip Thurmond and Mary Sarah Henderson, was born in 1738 in Amherst, Goochland, Virginia, USA. He died on 11 Mar 1794 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, USA (Age: 56). He married Elizabeth Goode in 1750 in Albemarle, Virginia, USA. Elizabeth Goode was born in 1740 in Albemarle, Virginia, USA. She died on 20 Jun 1805 in Edgefield, Edgefield County, South Carolina, USA (Age: 63). While John Thurmond parent’s were:- Phillip Thurmond, son of Richard T Thurmond and Mary Brooks, was born on 02 May, 1704 in New Kent, Hanover, Virginia, USA. He died on 08 Sep 1774 in St Anns Parish, Albermarle Cty, Virginia, USA. He married Mary Sarah Henderson in 1735 in Goochland, Goochland, Virginia, USA. Mary Sarah Henderson was born in 1720 in Virginia, USA. She died in 1775 in Albemarle, Virginia, USA. While Phillip Thurmond parent’s were:- Richard T Thurmond was born in 1670 in St Peter, New Kent, VA, USA. He died in 1712 in St Paul, Hanover, VA. He married Mary Brooks. Mary Brooks was born in 1680 in New Kent, Hanover, Virginia, USA. She died in 1715 in New Kent, Hanover, Virginia, USA. I am not sure if this migration path for Edmund Boyd’s wife, Susannah Thurmond, family MIGHT ALLOW people researching this family to trace through these locations, especially Albermarle County, Virginia and back into the older Counties of Hanover in Virginia to find possible Boyd families that Edmund might have come from? Good hunting. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS #48
I have just start to look at going to the AGM at Loon Mountain, NH for 16-18 September 2016. I have been thinking of flying to Boston, MA form Brisbane and then getting a bus or train up to Loon. It looks like it is about 2 hours from Boston, MA. (comparing the distance from Boston to Portland, ME which I did in 2010) I was also thinking of spending time at the New England Genealogical Society in Boston the week before from Tuesday 13 September to Friday 16 September and some days the following week from Tuesday 20 Sept. (They are closed on Mondays). So on the Monday 19 September is there somewhere in NH that I should or might call into their Library. I know that about 7 or 10 Boyd families came to Londonderry, NH in the 1718 migration with the Rev MacGregor party, but I do not have any details on these families. So will it be worth my time trying to find some details on these or perhaps going to the Public Library in Boston on Monday 19 September. Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust. #423

To save me time, if you belong to any of these families could you let me know and what Family Chapter number I might have given that family, so that I can enter those details in the fourth column. The entries for the Camden District do not match the current Counties. Camden District was abolished in 1785, so I am not sure why this term was used in in 1790, but with many of these Counties being in the NW corner of South Carolina, it may be worth descendants of any of these families going to the Greenville, SC Games at the end of May. This is usually held on the Saturday, with about 60 Clan Tents include a Boyd Tent. Then you can visit the County Library from where your family came from. It will be worth contacting each Library to see when they are open, as to if you visit them before or after the Games at Greenville. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

Hi Mike, Sorry - that info came from www.carolina.com Also: Camden District, SC Evolution of Boundaries - With Known Towns & Villages The "overarching" *Camden District ceded t**erritory to the Pinckney District in 1791 and to the Cheraws District in 1792*. Its population grew from 38,265 in 1790 to 42,693 in 1800, when it was eliminated and broken into smaller districts (counties). Hi Mike, FYI - Darlene Camden District, South Carolina 1769 - 1800 Significant Towns Established 1769 - 1800 Winnsborough, Columbia, Fergus's Crossroads, Singleton's Crossroads, Statesburgh, Lancaster, Chester A History of the Camden District In 1768, South Carolina eliminated all of the original counties and established seven new "overarching Districts," with judicial seats in each district. The Act creating these new districts was nullified by the British Parliament, but the re-introduction of the Act in 1769 was approved. From 1769 to 1785, these "overarching Districts" remained intact, however, the district seats did change some during that time-frame. After the American Revolution in 1785, South Carolina re-established the concept of counties and thirty-four (34) "new" counties were defined and established. Each of these new counties were "subsets" of, and subordinate to, the "overarching Districts" that had been in existence since 1769. Some of the newly-defined counties were abolished between 1785 and 1800, whereas other newly-defined counties were created during that period. In 1785, seven newly-defined "counties" were created wholly within the existing Camden District - Chester, Claremont, Clarendon, Fairfield, Lancaster, Richland, and York - but, the overarching Camden District remained intact. The town of Camden was always its district seat. In 1800, South Carolina abolished all "overarching Districts" and essentially went with the county concept from that year forward. However, in 1800, all counties were now called "districts" and would continue being called districts until after the American Civil War. In 1868, South Carolina reverted back to the term "county" and this term has been used continuously since then. The boundaries of the original Camden District remained the same from inception in 1769 until 1791, when the new Pinckney District was carved out of the Camden District and the Ninety-Six District. In 1798, some of the Districts were re-defined with updated boundaries, and Camden District was again reduced in size, giving up lands to carve out a newly-defined Salem County in 1792 (which was later abolished). The first United States Census was taken in 1790 and each of the original seven "overarching Districts" were enumerated within that census. By the 1800 U.S. Census, all of the original seven "overarching Districts" had been abolished and new counties (called districts at that time) were enumerated separately in that census. Since its abolishment in 1800, there has been no Camden District or Camden County in South Carolina. Can any list members tell me when the four brothers – Patrick, John, James and Robert went to Virginia and I assume Boyd’s crossing on the Dan River. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Mike, "Omally" is a transcription error from a census (I forget which one, 1790 maybe?) The Bryan Omery/Omary does show up in early Lunenburg county court records as working with John in road clearing. I have also run across him in relation to William Irby, who was a founding county commissioner in Halifax At that time 'Lunenberg' county included all of what would become Halifax county. Its the same place. a) yes, I agree that was her name, Lucetia O'mery b) all four of the brothers were gone from Compass, PA by 1740 and Patrick as early as 1736 when he headed out owing pelts. The settlement on the Dan river was, indeed, the first "white settlement" that far inland c) her daddy was a laborer who build the Cumberland trail. I have not yet identified his homestead but I think it was near "HicksFord"or somewhere near the William Irby estate close to "Black Walnut". (the location of all of these properties it may be possible to identify.) d) Robert died 1778, Lucretia was still alive in 1782 when the will was proven. I do not think you will find her grave in NC, though. I believe she lived her last years in Newberry SC. with her oldest boy Robert and may be buried there. (If anyone knows where these two are buried I would really like to find their graves) .On 3/29/2016 2:53 AM, Mike Boyd via wrote: > For the last two decades I have understood that Robert’s wife was Lucretia O’Mary. > > S5 Robert Boyd, b / /1720 ( ), d / /1782 (?) For the last two decades I have understood that Robert’s wife was Lucretia O’Mary. S5 Robert Boyd, b / /1720 ( ), d / /1782 (?) ( ), bu , m / /174x ( , ), Lucretia O'Mary, dau of and (nee ) O'Mary, bc 1720 ( ), d / /17xx ( ), d / /17xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- But I recently got some advice that her name was spelt as Lucretia Omery. “Robert C Boyd Sr.1763-1771, son of George Boyd Sr and Isabella, was born about 1716 in Antrim, Ulster, Ireland1763-1764, 1766, 1770. He died on 25 Aug 1778 in Granville, North Carolina, USA. He married Lucretia Omery in 1745 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Virginia, USA1766, 1772-1774. Lucretia Omery1773, 1775-1776, daughter of Bryan Omery, was born in 1720 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Virginia, USA1773, 1776. She died on 25 Aug 1778 in Granville, North Carolina, USA.” A) Has any member of this family come across this spelling for Robert’s wife? B) They may have got married in 1745, but I would question the location. I would have thought that the four brothers were still in PA at this time. Nor is my Virginia history too good, but I would not have expected White men to have been in this part of Virginia as early s this? C) Also Lucretia’s birth place of Lunenburg, VA would also need to be questioned for the same reason. Her date of birth could be “right” – 1720 – but being 25 years old might suggest her family had some wealth? D) You will notice that both Robert and Lucretia died on the same day – 25 Aug 1778. That does not “look” right? The date was when his Will was written. It was not proved until May 1782. So you might expect that he died in early 1782, rather than in 1778. I will have to add a “note” in Chapter 5/266 with this new infromation. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
>From the book, The Boyds of Boyds Tank, by Frank Ewell Boyd & William Taylor Boyd, (1970), 107 p. (USLC # 71-126643), pp 20-21, said that:- "The brothers James (1717?-1772) and Robert (1719?-1778?), sons of George Boyd of Pennsylvania, were in Virginia with older brothers John and Patrick for a time but moved to North Carolina settling in Granville County which borders on the Virginia state line just south of Halifax County. Both died in Granville County." This book does not say when they moved from VA to NC. So do any list members know this date? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
This is also my line though James Boyd and Mary Cochran, their son Samuel, and Samuel's son James (wives as yet unk). I believe James Sr. left Halifax VA for Granville NC in 1755-56, when Halifax County Court Minutes indicate that he did not appear to respond to assault, battery and trespass charges. He had also faced prosecution for debt and for the "concealing" of tithables (possibly to offset the debt). This is my line, Mike, 1756 is the register for the land purchase in Granville district by John Boyd for the "Knapp of Reeds" estate. Roberts place was cut from this original grant and was just to the north. After the treaty with the cherokees Roberts son, also Robert moved on west (south) and was in Newberry by 1790 then Pickens with his last wife by 1810 and was still alive when the Slaymaker lawsuit was finalized in 1834 (90 yrs old). John did not sell the New Boston property where his sons continued on in the ferry business. These guys all had highway maintenance contracts with their counties. There are Boyd still living there. Folks now that the snow is off the ground and we have all enjoyed our Easter, now might be a suitable time to post your Boyd queries. So what do you need to include:- 1) Full name and the common name they went by; 2) date and place of birth; 3) date and place of death; 4) where they are buried; 5) where they lived; 6) who they married – the name of the spouse; 7) the Church and its location they were married in and its denomination; 8) The spouses parents name. This will be the ideal situation with your query, but most of us do not know all this about our early Boyd ancestors, so post as much as you know about them and any other information that you might know about them. In the last two weeks I have been working on Boyds of Springfield MO, which went back to Williamson County, TN and then it seems to go back to Chester County, PA, and then to County Antrim, Ireland and then back to various places in Scotland until it makes a connection to the 6th Lord Boyd. This tree is not worth the paper it is written on. It has MIXED 5 OR 6 separate Boyd families and joined them together because they have confused names and place with father’s and sons. When I finish a few more letters, I will make a series of posting about this website and it wrong connection. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

Someone from SC may be able to provide better info, Mike, but The Handy Book for Genealogists shows SC became a State in 1788 although first colony was established on Ashley River in SE part of SC in 1671 by group of English and another group whose members had been living on Barbados Islands. Edgefield County was created in 1785 from the parent county District 96 (no longer exists) that was one of the original counties formed in 1769. Other counties formed from District 96 are: Abbeville Co. in 1785; Laurens Co. in 1785; Newberry Co. in 1785; Spartanburg Co. in 1785; and Union Co. in 1798. Counties that were later formed from Edgefield County were Aiken Co. in 1871 & Saluda Co. in 1896. Does anyone know if there are any history books for Edgefield County, South Carolina? And do you know when it was formed and form which County/s? I am currently doing some work on the family of U1? Edmund Boyd, bc / /1755 ( , VA), d / /1800 ( ), bu , m / /177x (church, town, county, etc), Sussannah Thurmond, dau of and (nee ) Thurmond, bc / /1755 ( ), d / /1846 ( ), bu , and had issue:- Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
I am jumping in here because of interest. I, too, would like to know more about this district. This is the southern part of the "old 96th district"that I will travel through on the way to the AGM this year. It did not exist until 1785. It was in total possession of the natives up until the mid 1750's. In 1790, when Erby was born, his father Roberts place in Newberry was part of the 96th, later Newberry county. Edgefield being cut from this district the early Boyd settlers are difficult to sort out. Just when I though I had them all you come along with a "new" one. tell us more about this Edmund. Are there any Boyds or Boyd descendants on either list from the Townland of Islandmagee or the Parish of Islandmagee, opposite Larne. I have seen Boyds listed in Larne in the 1600’s, but I am not sure if they were merchants, ministers, tradespeople, while at Islandmagee I expect that they would be farmers. Mike Boyd
