    1. Re: [BOYD] Snow in USA / Free jewelry / Woolly worms
    2. Michelle Ligon
    3. Mike et al, You are so right about being able at times to get down the hill much easier than I can get back up!  I definitely consider the return trip, first, when making my decision about whether or not to go anywhere.  To quote a local weather aficionado: "We are on track to have the coldest December and the snowiest on record. 28.7" for Boone and 61.5" for Beech Mountain. Quite a lightning quick start to the winter!"    On my recent Christmas visit to my mother's on the coast of NC, even they received snow on Christmas.  A local jeweler there in Wilmington had run a promotion after Thanksgiving through Dec. 11, so that anyone buying any jewelry during that time was eligible to get it free -- if it snowed on Christmas day 2010 in the mountain city of Asheville, NC.  He had found an insurance company who would insure him for this effort.  It hadn't snowed on Christmas in Asheville in many decades.  This year, it did, and the jeweler refunded approximately half a million dollars to some lucky customers!    Note: Local mountain folklore says that the indigenous woolly worm can foretell the winter weather.  The furry worms have bands or stripes in two colors, brown or black.  If the band is black, it foretells a period of harsh weather.  If it is brown, milder weather.  We have a Woolly Worm festival in October every year.  People race woolly worms and the winning worm gets to be the official weather forecaster.  This year's winner gave a black / brown / black (end-to-end) forecast.  Having just experienced the first "black" period, I think we are on schedule for some relief during January and/or February.  Our winter won't be over until the end of March normally, but we also don't plant anything much until after May 1, and some wait until after Mother's Day for good measure.  Thirty-three years ago, our area received three feet of snow on May 8.  Other years in May, we've gotten a lesser amount of snow.   Happy New Year, Boyd family! 2. A report on snow here in the northern mountains of Arizona, it started snowing this morning around 6 am and has not stopped yet (about 8 inches so far). They are predicting 12-24 inches with snow forcast for the rest of 2010. Hopefully that's all we will get, unlike last January when we received 5 FEET along with an inch of rain in the middle which brought down the flat roofs in town. 3. Karen Of the 5 sons of George and Isabella Boyd only their second son George stayed in PA. It would seem from the notes below that Patrick and John Boyd stayed on the Dan River and the two younger brother - James and Robert - moved to Granville Co., NC. During my trip I was told that they were near the NC/VA border, so that when the tax colllectors came they could claim to be in the other State. (True Scotsmen). If you have any additional details on these sons, I woul dlike to hear form you please. 1. [BOYD] Robert Boyd and Nancy Namdyne of Westmoreland Co., PA
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. >From the posting of Kim Boyd of 22 December 2010 the website gives us this information "James Mitchell Boyd is a native of Allegheny county, Pennsylvania. He was born eighteen miles north of Pittsburg, February 12, 1828. He is of Scotch, Irish and Holland ancestry. Robert Boyd, the grand-father on the father's side, emigrated from Ireland about 1785 when but 17 years of age. He first settled in Philadelphia, but afterwards removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and Magistrate. He married Nancy Namdyne, a native of Delaware, a decedent of the earliest Holland emigrants to that State. They has a family of thirteen children. He served on the staff of Gen. Crooks as Judge Advocate in the war of 1812. He died during the late rebellion at a very advanced age." The website tells us that James Mitchell Boyd was the one of James Boyd, one of the 13 children of Robert and Nancy but not what his order of birth was in this family. Does anyone on this list belong to this family and can they provide any extra details about its descendants. What details I do have, I will turn into family chapter 25/1261 in Volume 25 of "Clan Boyd of Scotland" (for Boyd families in PA) Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

    3. Dear List members This is what I have found on the Boyds of Essex County, MASS:- (i) In the 1790 US Census there are these Boyds from Essex County, MASS (which as you may know is in the NE of MASS and on the New Hampshire border):- BOYD, Abraham MA Co: Essex Twp: Gloucester BOYD, Adam MA Co: Essex Twp: Ipswich (ii) However, it is the second entry that looks interesting, as it is the same location that your Mary Boyd was born. I do not have any data on a Boyd family from Ipswich Essex County, MASS, or any other Boyd family from this County. So could Adam Boyd be her brother or father or no relation? (iii) As this is a coastal County, it is also difficult to know if her family came directly from overseas or from one of the Boyd locations in Maine, New Hampshire or Boston. (iv) If she came from one of the New Hampshire Boyd families perhaps Colin Brooks may have her in one of his families from the 1718 Project? (v) I can't recall any previous migrations from MASS down to North Carolina. However, this may be due to the War of Independence or resulted from the family moving after the War - perhaps to take up land. (vi) I have this Boyd family from New Hampshire:- L69 William: b 1719 IR D 11-24-1789 NH m Alice Hunter Pvt NH (ch 2/131, T1, W26588EE.doc) L70 William: b 1736 NH d 10-10-1825 NH m Martha Dickey Pvt NH (son of L69, Ch 2/131, U2, W26588EE) and these from NC L16 Hugh: b c 1730 NC d a 1800 m Jane --- Dr NC (no - vol 28, 1st ch) L28 John: b 8-3-1758 NC d 12-2-1814 TN m Caroline Ann Bone OrdlSgt NC WPNS (no - vol 28, 2nd ch) L66 William: b 1758 NC d 1831 NC m Rhoda Davenport Pvt NC (letters, NC # 32, Queries, PA # 32 - might be S3/T2 from chapter 5/266, if second marriage, W56588HC.doc - vol 28, 3rd ch) L67 William: b 3-15-1761 NC d 2-14-1847 TN m (1) Mary Wasson (2) Nancy Small Pvt NC PNSR (ch 3/189, U1, W36588FE.doc) L68 William: b c 1730-34 NC d a 5-28-1805 TN m Elizabeth McTeer PS NC (might be father of L67 - not proved) (no - vol 28, 4th ch) But none of the North Carolina families have come from New England or directly from overseas, so I do not think that any of the NC DAR entries might be connected to your Mary Boyd's family. I know that there are some Boyds in Boston and MASS, so perhaps in the New Year they may wish to volunteer to see what other details they can find on these Boyds from Essex county, MASS. He was b. abt 1835/36 in Patrick County, VA. He later married Sarah Wyatt, 27 Jul 1865 in Catlettsburg, KY. They had Anna Laura Boyd and Ulysses Grant Boyd. Anna married Johnathan Morris Lyons who then had my husband's grandfather. There is an old family story that has been passed down but I've yet to prove it. Perhaps someone on this site may have heard it as well. Supposedly someone in this line was an Indian chief by the name of Mendaho, either a Boyd or Wyatt. This has been shared with me by several family members in years past. I have a picture of Anna that does resemble one of Indian heritage but again, that's not proof either. I do not know Ewell's (also written Yewell) lineage but do know Sarah Wyatt decends from Reuben Wyatt and Magdeline Kincaid. I'd appreciate any help with this particular line if anyone knows anything. 3.     I have been thinking about Isaac Johnson that was on the genealogy.com.  It was sent to me and the way it reads is that Isaac was the son of Benjamin Johnson b. 1740 Granville N.C., In the Historic Cane Families on page 169 quote, "In the Hotton's records give the following information:"  "Thomas Johnston, single, with eight negro slaves came to Virginia from Ireland in July 1680." I question this because some of Hotton's records have been incorrect in the past. The information on Genealogy.com states that Benjamin was the father of Isaac.    As far as I am concerned there were many Johnsons who came from Ireland and how do we prove that Thomas was the first of our Johnsons?    Joyce

    3. Members this is a Email that I have just written back to John Jameson (Ejjameson@aol.com). From this data this Mr Boyd COULD HAVE married Elizabeth Jameson in Templemore Parish which is located on the western side of the Foyle River and takes in most of the old part of Londonderry City, County Londonderry. However, the family before it sailed in 1746 on the Molly form Port Rush appears to have been living in the Coleraine area of County Londonderry. So Mr Boyd may have some from that area of Ireland. So if you have any information that may help John please include him in your reply. Hopefully, he can find some additional information form hte suggstions that Ihave sent to him. Thank you. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: Ejjameson@aol.com To: mikejboyd@bigpond.com Sent: Thursday, December 23, 2010 5:29 AM Subject: Boyd-Jameson information Hello Mr. Boyd, I have come across a couple of archive posting you have made with respect to your Boyd family and apparently their relationship to my Jameson family, both in Ulster, Ireland and here in Colonial America. I have further information for you on this subject. My ancestor was Hugh Jameson (1713-1790). I have his sister as Elizabeth (Jameson) Boyd Woods. I have her emigrating to America aboard the "Molly" in 1746 along with her brother Hugh and his wife. I have conclusive proof of this in a hand written and signed deposition used by Hugh in a 1753 NH court case, here, I have Ester Woods (1723-1790), as Elizabeth Woods daughter and married to Robert Parkinson. I assume this is the Robert Parkinson who acted as the "Power of Attorney" in Coleraine for several of (at least) Jamesons, who had emigrated to New England. I have also assumed that this was the same Robert Parkinson who guaranteed Hugh Jameson's passage and that both he and his wife Esther were on board the Molley with Hugh and his wife in 1746. This last part may very well not be accurate. I am hoping you can shed some light on the above Elizabeth Jameson and any connection she may have had with your Boyd's, particularly as to a first husband. I would also be interested in any other connections between your Boyd's and my Jamesons, either in Ulster or in New England. I hope this is of some value to you. Thanks John Jameson www.somejamesons.com

More territory was added from the town of Covington in 1823. Salt was discovered in 1883 near modern Retsof, leading to the formation of the New York Rock Salt Company. Further discoveries were made subsequently by the Empire Salt Company.
