This is an excerpt from a recent article in a Bristol, VA/TN (USA) newsletter about a Boyd. Charlene Boyd Kemp PA State Historian HBS January 18, 2011: Peyton Boyd, a Bristol native, has been a board member of Believe in Bristol since its inception in 2001, as well as the Design Committee Chairperson. An Abingdon-based architect, Peyton has recently received the William C. Noland Medal from the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. Sometimes equated to a lifetime achievement award, the William C. Noland Medal is the organization's highest honor bestowed upon an architect. In presenting this award, the Society recognized the decades of dedicated and generous service Boyd has given to his profession as well as his impassioned and public advocacy of good design.
Susan You will need to do several thinks. (i) Have you googled Hannah Montague, who married the unknown Mr Boyd - most likely in Virginia? (ii) Have you looked at the IGI - both onlne and at your local LDS centre for their CD and other versions of the IGI. You are looking for her marriage entry. Which hopefully we not only giove his name, but which church, town and county. (When you find that we MAY be able to connect you to his family. (iii) You have that Hannah Montague was born about 1802 in Virginia and had her first known child in 1836 in Georgia. I would suspect that she was married in the late 1820's. (iv) While you have the Montague family coming from Essex County , VA and Hannah's sister Lucy being married in Spotsylvania County in about 1820. So these 2 Counties may be worth searchnng on their Net group to see if you can find both Boyd and Montague families Good hunting Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

Susan Have you looked at US Census? I do not think that the 1890 Census survives, but check both the 1880 and 1900 Census for Shelby Co., Ill and let the list know what you find. Hopefully in 1880 CEnsus, you can get Charles T Boyd, Sr.'s age and find what his occuption was, etc. Then the group may be bale to make some suggestion where you can look for him. Indianapolis, IN has a fabulous Gen department in the Library. I believe the library is located in the downtown district. Allen Library? -----Original Message----- From: Mike Boyd Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2011 6:59 PM To: BOYD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOYD] Mike Boyd's tour of upper Mid west after AGM on 16 & 17April 2011 As List member know I will be going to the 2011 AGM at Las Vegas on 16 & 17 April. So rather than just spend 4 days in Las Vegas and coming home, I thought it may be useful to spend some time touring the upper eastern Mid west. I promised Joyce Arcus of Greensboro, NC that I would visit their highland Games on Saturday 30 April. And I said to Lauren that I would also go to the 135th Anniversary Sacramento Valley Scottish Games on 7 & 8 May. At both these venues, I EXPECT that I will do a "history" talk the night before at a venue to be advised. From the experience along the East Coast of the USA last year, these talks will be about 3 hours. So on Monday 18 April 2011, I was hoping to fly from Las Vegas to St Louis, Missouri. However, now looking at the times between Games it may be worth looking at flying to say, Des Moines, Iowa on the Monday and having a meeting there and then fly onto Inndianapolis, Indiana or some other venue in Indiana before, I go by train, bus or car to other venues that people may be able to arrange in Ohio, perhaps lower Ontario in Canada, Kentucky, western New York State, Western PA, West Virginia. Then after Greensboro, NC, I could go to several places in Tessessee before flying to either St Louis or Kansas City, Missouri on the Thursday and either flying onto Sacramento on Thursday night or Friday morning. At this time I have not looked at any internal US flights to see what legs are possible or not.. So given this rough Tour Plan can members of this list indicate if they would like to organise an meeting of Boyd and Boyd researchers in their location, so I can pass on some of the history and knowledge that I have gained on my trips to Scotland and Ireland in recent years. I am now 66 years old, so this will be most likely the first and last time that I will be able to travel to these States. I found this in the MyIndianaHome.net under the link "Switzerland Co. IN". Here are some some Boyd Biographies of Switzerland Co. IN. A reprint of this may be purchased. (See the website for details.) HENRY BOYD, farmer, Jefferson Township, was born in Bracken County, Ky., June 8, 1811. His father, James, was born in Virginia and died January 20, 1852, being one hundred years, five months and fifteen days old; his mother, Phebe (WEBSTER) Boyd was also born in Virginia and died January 2, 1865, eighty-seven years old. They moved to Kentucky in 1790 and to Switzerland County, Ind., in 1819. He was a farmer all his life. The good old people belonged to the Baptist Church. Mr. Henry Boyd was married April 8, 1832, to Miss Lucretia HAYCOCK, who was born in Kentucky, November 14, 1812. Their seven children were Lonsford, born February 2, 1833, died April 3, 1837; Morgan, born January 6, 1835, died August 28, 1875; Parker, born October 14, 1837, died November 11, 1847; Phebe J., born March 11, 1839, Mrs. FUNK; Minerva, born October 13, 1841, died September 13, 1854; Clinton, born February 20, 1847; Mary A., born December 27, 1848. Mr. Boyd was school director, clerk and treasurer under the old rule; he has been a member of the Baptist Church for over fifty years, and is now a deacon in the church. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OLIVER BOYD, farmer, York Township, born in this county in 1833, is a son of Elijah and Polly (HAYCOCK) Boyd and grandson of James Boyd, who settled in this county from Kentucky prior to 1820. His father came to this county when fourteen years of age with his parents, and grew to manhood in this locality, married, and here reared children. This wife died, and for his second wife he married a Mrs. GREEN nee COLE, by whom he reared six children. By a third wife, Mary ROSS, he had two children, both of whom died infants. He began life in humble circumstances and became one of the thrifty farmers of the county, owning 520 acres of land; he died in 1872; his last wife died about 1875. He was captain of a militia company in this county in early years, and was generally in the front as a defender of the laws of his country. Oliver, our subject, grew up on his father's farm, remaining there till twenty-one. He then worked one year for himself at wages, and after as a partner about five years; he then purchased of his father, and has continued on the farm ever since; now owns 240 acres of which he has gradually gained chiefly by his own exertions; deals some in stock and aims to improve the grades as much as possible. Mr. Boyd was married, in 1861, to Frances PENDRY, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (WILES) Pendry, both natives of North Carolina, where they were reared and died. By this union there were born three children who are living: John, Kate and Harry --two infants deceased. Mr. Boyd is a member of the F. & A.M., and one of the thrifty farmers of the Township. He is a liberal Democrat, generally casting his vote for the man instead of the party. DANIEL BOYD, farmer, York Township, born in this county in 1831, is a son of Elijah Boyd, whose history appears above. He grew up on the farm with his parents, and shared the limited advantages of the common schools. In 1854 was married to Laura A. IRBY, a native of Indiana, and daughter of Joseph A. and Eliza (WALKER) Irby, natives of Tennessee and Indiana respectively. Her parents married in this State and subsequently moved to Illinois, where they now reside at Caving Rock. After his marriage Mr. Boyd began operations for himself; he made his first purchase in 1857, which he sold in 1860, and then purchased his present farm of 113 3/4 acres, on which he has since resided and has done a general farming business, and has been fairly successful. Mr. Boyd has reared nine children: Fernando, Ology, Angeline, Joseph, Jennie, Emerson, Norris, Daniel and John. The father is a member of F. & A.M. Fernando Boyd married Fannie ISRAEL. Their children are Dora, Warren, and an infant. Jennie married Wilson HUSTON; they have one child, Emerson. Joseph married Dora PETERS. JOHN W. BOYD, tinner and stove dealer, Vevay, was born in York Township March 28, 1845, where he received a fair education. His father, James W., was born in city of Cork, Ireland, in 1818; his mother Catharine (KEITH) Boyd in York Township in 1820. They married in 1844 and raised six children: John W., James, born January 15, 1847; Edward, born July 10, 1849; Frank, born July 16, 1851; Alfred, born July 3, 1856; George, born January 19, 1859. His father was a tinner and wire worker, and came to America in 1821 and to Indiana in 1840. He was justice of the peace for years and township trustee; he was a Knight Templar and Odd Fellow, also a member of the Baptist Church; he died March 30, 1860. John W. was married December 12, 1868, to Miss Lydia A. BALDWIN, and they have seven children: Florence, Lucinda C., Rhoda, John W., Ruth A., Thomas and Archie. In 1867, Mr. Boyd went to his present trade and branched out in business in February, 1881. He was a member of the city council from Second Ward in 1884; he is a member of Indiana Lodge No. 126 I.O.O.F. and he and his wife belong to the Rebecca Degree Lodge I.O.O.F.

In the late 1990's I was given the marriage of:- BOYD, James WEBSTER, Phebe 1797 Do any of our list members know where in Virginia this marriage might have taken place? It is known that James was born in Culpeper Co., VA in 1751. So I am assuming that he moved south and perhaps even towards the western part of VA either looking for Land or working some someone else. So if you are researching in Virginia (or have been) and have come across any unknown James Boyd's please let the list know so that Jean Boyd can add them to her list of possible James Boyds Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

Darlene, Are you the "chosen" or volunteered leader on the Boyd's to Las Vegas affair? If so thanks. Can you send me which hotel you chose so I can book there, as well. Or if you are going to get a block of rooms, please account for a standard room for myself and wife. I will book myself upon your information. Thanks, Actually Many Thanks David R Boyd PO Box 779, New Market, MD 21774 #301-865-9870 -----Original Message----- From: boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Mike Boyd Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2011 6:57 PM To: Darlene Amark, Owner - FairWinds Travel Cc: BOYD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOYD] Mike Boyd at 2011 AGM at Las Vegas, 15-17 April 2011 Darlene When I stayed with Lauren last year, she did mention a Hotel in Las Vegas which was not too expensive - sorry can't remember the name of it. I think it started with an F.- just suffering form an information overload from that trip. I think it would be "best" if all those going to Las Vegas, could stay in the one place, but the price range of the Hotel selected will determine that. Lauren, can you provide Darlene with the name of the Hotel you were thinking of. Then we can work out a group price and how we get to and from Tom Boyd Stadium, etc It has been suggested to me that I should stay at the Boyd Tent, so I will need a group of people who can go to other Clan tents to see if any Male or Female Boyd's have married into their Clan during these two days. Ken Wray has sent me a photo of the Arms of Jackson Wray and Lenora Boyd of Ballycastle. As you look at it on the right side is a set of Boyd arms, with the Azure a fess checquy Argent and Gules. Then above this are two crescents and below the fess chequy is third crescent. Hugh Boyd of Ballycastle has four crescents in his arms - 2 above and 2 below. When I checked with the other Arms I have, it is similar to the Arms of the Boyd-Rochfort family whose Boyd Arms are the same. The fact that these Wray/Boyd Arms have 1738 on them would SUGGEST that Lenora Boyd of Ballycastle knew their connection back to the Kilmarnock family. During my trip to Ballymoney, we were told that Jackson Wray was a "major" sub-lease land owner. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
As many of you will have seen over the last three weeks or so, quite a number of regions in the south and up to the central Queensland have been flooded. On Monday afternoon, there was a cloud bust at Toowoomba, about 100 kms west of Brisbane - in which 10 people were killed because the water rose so quickly. This water, which is several time larger than Sydney Harbour, came to Ipswich yesterday and peaked this Morning in Brisbane with a King Tide. I think that in Ipswich some 3,000 houses went under - with some having the water going over their roofs. In Brisbane, the next local council area, down the river, they think that some 40,000 homes and businesses have been flooded. Our CBD is a ghost town at present, as it has been flooded and they had to turn off the electricity. Our part of town is very nice and dry. But yesterday when I went to my local fruit shop they said that they will most likely close today for a week because fruit and vegetables will not be able to get into Brisbane, as most of our Highways are covered with water. They expect that some people may not be able to live in their homes for up to 6 to 12 months, as many will have to rebuilt inside before people can live in them. While I do not know of any Boyds being in trouble, I expect that there are some Boyd cousins out there that will have had to take up swimming lessons quickly in the last few days. Mike Boyd
It may be selfish of me.... but.... I am glad that you are high and dry, Mike! I am sorry that your countrymen are experiencing this devastation.
