    3. Mike is quite well and dry with a roof over his head. The Cyclone, which was a Force 5 - the same that hit New Orleans - was about 1700 kms north of Brisbane (and I think there is still another 700 or 800 kms before you get to Cape York at the tip of Queensland). I am not sure how that relates to distances in the USA or other places. The said it was about 1000 kms wide and there was a 4 or 6 metre tidal surge that come with it on the southern side. It hit a small farming area between Cairns and Townsville, so not too many houses & builds were damaged. I think one person died from the fumes of his generator in a closed room the night the cyclone passed over. 2 nights ago, the TV News showed people back on the Barrier Reef, but I did not catch were that was. Cairns and Port Douglas - our main north Queensland tourist areas - will be back in operation. Bit some of the tourist Island between Cairns and Townsville, will have to be rebuilt. Last night, they showed some dairy cows on a tableland behind Cairns, where the cows have now gone into shock form the 250 kms per hour winds and they are producing curdled milk which the farmers were having to pour down the drain. I know that some distant parts of my own family live in this area and also around Tully which was the main town that was struck. No I have been busy Indexing some of the folders of material that I collected on my 2010 trip, so I know what material I have. I will then have to go back through these papers so I can determine if I already have known families for these people or need to start up new family chapters. If my estimate is right - I collected 500 plus new Boyd families - I will fill up 10 new Volumes this year alone from last years trip. 1. [BOYD] Kilbride Parish Church of 1700 - where was it?
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. During my trip to Kilmarnock in 2010, I found the book on Monfode of that Ilk (which is just north of Ardrossan by a few kms) it says:- "In the burying-ground of Kilbride and on two alter stones, situated a little way south of the parish church, are cut the following inscriptions." This stone is dated 1698 and the second 1702. However, it is the term "little way south of the parish church) that interests me. I know that there is a new Church - which I think is on Drummilling Road - and an older church which is now used as a Community centre nearer the centre of West Kilbride. However, I am not sure where this "Parish Church of about 1700 is located? This may be the Church were Robertson said that 16 Alexander Boyds of Portincross were buried in the same vault. This would be over about a 400 year period. If you know of the location of this Church, I would be most grateful to hear form you please. Thank you. 1. Re: [BOYD] Boyd Theory-Chester/Lancaster Cnty.PA
    2. Dear Boyd cousins, Howard Jones and Christian Boyd have given us a lot to think about as we try to figure out the Boyds in Chester and Lancaster County, PA, USA. Lancaster Cnty. was formed from Chester Cnty. , 1729, so we have to consider records in both counties for these early families. So much has been written about George and Isabella in Compass, PA, but there is still so much to learn. I am making a plea that if there is anyone that has any info you haven't shared, or even a theory you haven't shared, that you please speak up. When it gets a bit warmer I will be happy to do further research in these two counties if someone has a theory of where new info might be found. So, please join in and give us your ideas about these Boyds! Please???? Charlene Boyd Kemp PA State Historian HBS

    3. Just a note to say that the Robert Boyd who was a ember of the Upper Octorara church in sadsbury Township, cheste Co. PA, was not anyof the Roberts mentioned in this message. He is my ancestor, and he bought land there in 1726. His wife was Jennet, maiden name unknown. He is buried in the cemetery at Upper Octorara . His tombstone shows him born c.1678, d. 1743 He had for certain two sons, James and John, and probably a third, Rbrty, and perhaps other children. In a deed to his son John, he is labeled as a "taylor". Although I think he my have come with the rev. Adam Bpyd, I have seen no evidence that they were related, nor is there evidence that Bobert was related to amotjer boyd family at Upper Octorara. Robert's son John had asons Robert and Andrew, who left Chester Co. c.1763. They turn up in Iredell Co. NC, moving to KY and then TN in the 1780's. This Robert, wife Ann, died in davidson co. TN. in 1793 Andrew went to Maury Co. TN. Howard V.. Jones -------------------------------------------------- From: "Christian D. 1. [BOYD] Using pre 1850 US Census to find your Boyd family
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. I have just been sent this family which is the person brick wall (but it will apply to quite a number of other people as well) When all you have is an State that the person was born in pre 1850. 1. Jesse Boyd Birth 1807 in KY Death 1855 in Jefferson County, Indiana, USA Spouse Sally (Sarah) Staples 1808 - 1870 Children Artemsa Boyd 1830 - 1891 A) This tree does not give when Jesse Boyd and Sally Staples were married. I would assume about 1828 or more likely 1829. So I think my first task would be to find where they were married, TOWN, CHURCH and COUNTY. B) The second step would be to find out where the first child or few children were born. You may be able to do that from their Death certificate, the IGI or some other sources C) While Kentucky became a State in 1792, it does not have Federal Census until 1810. So I am not sure if the 1800 Census might still have been part of Virginia. I am partly ASSUMING that in all three situations that the Boyd family not move from when Jesse was born to when he was married and had his first child. Are there any other "tricks" or methods that people have used to break down this brick wall? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS

    1. Re: [BOYD] Boyd DNA project
    2. Larry said: " The practical side of finding out that a Boyd you are researching is in a very different haplo group is that it can save you tons of work on paper trail research that you could otherwise direct to other more fruitful pursuits." I do understand Larry's point, but in my own case it will not bring an end to my perhaps fruitless search. I am descended from the Patrick County VA Boyds, however my family DNA does not match others that, on paper, definitely should be the same family. When you consider that we've thought ourselves to be the same Boyds since the early 1700's, I'm not just going to give up finding the Boyd that got us to this country in the first place. These people are still my family. Biologically, if I go back 28 generations maybe I was a Hinkle or a Richardson according to the present FTDNA matches, but how would I ever find the "missing link" there? So, I'll just continue to search for the Boyd that got me here and be grateful that somebody in this fine family took in one of my ancestors long, long ago. Charlene Boyd Kemp PA State Historian HBS

    1. [BOYD] Theory
    2. Christian D. Boyd
    3. I have been kicking this theory around for a while, trying to break through the Robert Boyd of Statesville, NC block. Based on some of Mike's recent posted hunches etc, this is what I am thinking (and need the data to back it). Robert Boyd (III) [1728-1806], who married & Eleanor McCulloch (whose father may have been a tailor in PA), was the son of: Robert Boyd (II) [1697-1754] & Alice NOTE of INTEREST: Information from Page 50-51 of the Christian County Kentucky Family History Book..... not sure when it was published or by whom. Covers many of the leading families in the county. Early in the 18th century, George Boyd and his wife, Isabella, arrived in the Lancaster/ Chester area of Pennsylvania. They came from County Antrim, Ulster in northern Ireland. There were 5 sons, George, Jr., Patrick, John, James and Robert. After George Sr's death in 1731 and the settlement of his estate, George Jr. stayed in Pennsylvania while his four brothers went south to Halifax County, Virginia and Granville County, North Carolina. Here they all bought land, built homes, and proceeded to rear large families. As new lands opened up, some of their sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons began to move away. By mid 19th century, there were branches of the family living in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Seven of the families came to the Christian/ Trigg County area of Kentucky. Five of Patrick's grandsons came. To Christian County came Aaron, Francis, and David. Abner had lands in both Trigg and Christian Counties. To Trigg came Archibald (Archer) Boyd. John Boyd had a grandson named Roy. Although it is believed that Roy did not come to Kentucky, it is believed that his widow and all of his children came. Records of the settlement of his estate exist in both Halifax County, Virginia and Trigg County, Kentucky. Robert Boyd had a grandson named Thomas (son of Robert III, who eventually settled in Callaway Co, MO via Trigg Co, KY). After his death, his wife and their four children came to Trigg County, Kentucky. Robert II was the son of: Robert Boyd (I) [1678-1743] & Elisabeth 'Jennet" Johnston NOTE of INTEREST: 1718, Ulster - A group of Scottish citizens who lived in the North of Ireland in 1718, petitioned then New England Governor, Col. Samuel Shute, for encouragement to come to America. In the list of 309 signers appears the name of Boyd nine times as follows: Robert Boyd, Samuel Boyd, William Boyd, William Boyd, John Boyd, William Boyd, Thomas Boyd, John Boyd and Robert Boyd. From the History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, page 23: To His Excellency, the Right Honorable Colonel Samuel Shute, Governor of New England. We whose names are underwritten, inhabitants of ye North of Ireland, do in our own names, and in the names of many other our neighbours, gentlemen, ministers, farmers, tradesmen, commissionate and appoint our trust and well-beloved friend, the Reverend Mr. William Boyd, of Macasky, to his Excellency the Right Honroable Colonel Samuel Shute, Governor of New England, and to assure His Excellancy of our sincere and hearty inclination to transport ourselves to that very excellent and renowned Plantation, upon our obatining from His Excellency suitable encouragement; and further, to act and do in our names as his Prudence shall direct. Given under our hands this 26th day of March, Anno Dom 1718. There are also signatures for Alexander Blair, John Blair, Hugh Blair, Joseph Blair and William Blair. This information obtained from Reverend J.W. (Bill) Dupree, of Valdosta, Georgia who was a frequent correspondent of my Aunt Gail Dunham in their mutual search for their ancestors. Immigrated in 1730. Robert I was son of: Rev. Adam Boyd (II) [1650- ] & Agnes Forsythe NOTE of INTEREST: Rev. Adam's grandson, Adam Boyd IV, came from Ballymoney, Ireland, in 1692, and came to New England as a probationer in 1722 or 1723. He was received under the care of New Castle Presbytery in July, 1724. He accepted a call to the churches of Octorara and Pequea, and was ordained, October 13th, at Octorara. In October, 1727, the families on the west side of the stream Octorara having asked for one-third of his labors, he was directed to spend every sixty Sabbath at Middle Octorara. The Forks of Brandywine composed part of his field until 1734. In the progress of the great revival, a large portion of his congregation having left him and joined the Brunswick brethren, he asked leave, August 11th, 1741, to accept the invitation given him by the fraction of Brandywine which adhered to the Old Side. His relation to the Forks was dissolved in 1758. He died November 23d, 1768. Mr. Boyd was a man of great exactness, recording in what articles his salary was paid; thus John Long paid by publications (as a magistrate) of marriages and astrays, and by a riddle. His congregation agreed to pay him twenty-five pounds yearly during his life and several of them remembered him, in their dying testaments, by small bequests. Robert Boyd II followed Rev. Adam Boyd, his cousin, and was a member of the congregation in Octorara. Rev. Adam Boyd II was the son of: Capt. Adam Boyd (I) [1623-1649] & Mary Boyd NOTE of INTEREST: Captain in the army sent by Charles I (reign 1625-1649) to Ireland. Capt. Adam Boyd I was the son of: Bishop Andrew Boyd [1569-1639] & Elizabeth Conygham NOTE of INTEREST: Peerage records seem to miss Andrew when listing the descendants of Thomas Boyd, but other common records, particularly ecclesiastical, talk about Bishop Boyd note he is the "natural son" of Lord Boyd. Bp. Andrew Boyd was the son of: Thomas Lord Boyd [1547-1611] & Margaret Campbell

    1. [BOYD] Bishop Andrew Boyd (1569-1639)
    2. Christian D. Boyd
    3. I remember back there was some discussion about Bishop Andrew Boyd (1569-1639) and if he was a "Presbyterian" or an "Episcopalian" or fell into that period when the Church of Scotland had titular bishops for a while to appease London. He was the Scottish Episcopal Bishop of Lismore/Argyll from 1613-1636. I came across the following at http://guide.visitscotland.com/vs/guide/5,en,SCH1/objectId,INF52270Svs,curr, GBP,season,at1,selectedEntry,home/home.html >>> Dunoon Old & St. Cuthbert's Church (The High Kirk) CHURCH HISTORY The church has stood on or near this site since the 13th century. In early times it was linked to Dunoon Castle, a stronghold and occasional Royal residence, which stood on the adjoining hilltop. The church met the religious needs of the Castle occupants and administered to the needs of the inhabitants of the cottages which were scattered around it. It was a church of considerable importance and records of its links with the Cathedral of Glasgow and Paisley Abbey are to be found in old documents bearing the signatures of Rectors of the church. In these documents it is referred to as the Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In a Charter dated 1453, King James II granted to the Bishop of Argyll and his successors, the Parish Church of Dunoon with its tithes and church lands. The Reformation, established in 1560, brought Presbyterian ministers to Dunoon Parish Church and, in the 17th century, bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church, notably Bishop Andrew Boyd, were resident, possibly in the Bishop's Palace, thought to be sited where the nearby primary school now stands.

    1. Re: [BOYD] Boyd DNA - R-U198 Haploid group
    2. Larry Boyd
    3. Nice explanation Jeri. There is a very practical implication about the Y-DNA testing and haplo group results contained in what you explained. Particularly in: "Haplogroup A existed about 60,000 years ago and haplogroup R developed about 27,000 years ago. So you can see that, for the purpose of genealogy research, there is never going to be a common ancestor for haplogroup A Boyds and haplogroup R Boyds. They simply are NOT related." The practical side of finding out that a Boyd you are researching is in a very different haplo group is that it can save you tons of work on paper trail research that you could otherwise direct to other more fruitful pursuits. Larry -----Original Message----- From: boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boyd-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jeri Ann Boyd Sent: Monday, January 31, 2011 1:27 PM To: Mike Boyd; BOYD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOYD] Boyd DNA - R-U198 Haploid group Dear Mike,   Yes, I'm happy to explain what I think you are asking about haplogroups.  I hope that I am correct in thinking that you are asking when in the past there was a common ancestor to which all the Boyds can link?  If this is NOT what you want, please re-phrase the question and ask again.   Using the link below my signature, you will arrive at the public Y-results chart for the Boyd DNA Project.  You will notice that the list is organised into several different groups.  These are the haplogroups.  The Boyds have, so far, members in haplogroups A, E, I, J and R, haplogroup A being the oldest haplogroup and haplogroup R being the most recent to develop.  Within those groups are finer distinctions, for example, there is R1a and R1b.  Within THOSE groups are even further distinctions.  These distinctive groups are called "sub-clades."   Using the tree as metaphor, think of the trunk as haplogroup A.  Then think of the other haplogroups as branches from that trunk.  To give you some sense of time over which these various groups developed, it is believed that the R branch of the haplogroup tree appeared about 27,000 years ago.  The two big branches of R to have been identified are R1 and R2.  All of the haplogroup R Boyds can be found on the R1 branch, which is itself estimated to have arisen about 18,500 years ago.   Every time a further refinement of any haplogroup is identified, a new letter or number is added to its description.  This can be cumberson, so a sort of shorthand has developed.  Here is an example.    R1b1b2, a further branching of the R1 branch, is estimated to have arisen approximately 4,000 to 8,000 years ago in southwest Asia, spreading into Europe from there.   Most European R1b1b2 belong to haplogroups R1b1b2a1a1 or R1b1b2a1a2.  You can see how cumbersome this nomenclature is becoming.  So R1b1b2a1a1 is called U106 (the U signifies the lab where it was identified).  The most recent refinement of U106 is U198.  So now we are no longer imagining branches of the tree so much as we are imagining twigs.   I'm not meaning to confuse you and, if I am, I apologize.  But it is important that you get the sense of the passage of time that separates one haplogroup from another and what that means to genealogy research.  Haplogroup A existed about 60,000 years ago and haplogroup R developed about 27,000 years ago.  So you can see that, for the purpose of genealogy research, there is never going to be a common ancestor for haplogroup A Boyds and haplogroup R Boyds.   They simply are NOT related.  The same can be said about all the haplogroups.  They are NOT related within any meaningful time.   Now we can talk about who CAN be said to be related and I'll use U198 as an example.  The U198 group is a relatively rare sub-clade of R, yet it is quite numerous in the Boyd DNA Project.  These Boyds are definitely related.  The question is, how closely are they related?  I am a member of this group so I'll use myself as an example.    FTDNA calculates the chances of relatedness for every "match."   Their calculations for the chances of my being related to my closest match are:   Generations               Percentage  2                               16.55%  4                               46.30%  8                               85.51% 10                              93.33% Generations Percentage 2 16.55% 4 46.30% 6 70.63% 8 85.51% 10 93.33% 12 97.08% 14 98.77% 16 99.50% 18 99.80% 20 99.92% 22 99.97% 24 99.99% 26 100.00% Generations Percentage 2 16.55% 4 46.30% 6 70.63% 8 85.51% 10 93.33% 12 97.08% 14 98.77% 16 99.50% 18 99.80% 20 99.92% 22 99.97% 24 99.99% 26 100.00%   So each member of the project can tell approximately how many generations they need to go back in their genealogical research to discover their MRCA (most recent common ancestor) with any of their matches.   I am grateful for the opportunity your question provided to explain this once again.  I know it's a difficult subject and hope I've explained it clearly.   Kind regards, Jeri Ann Boyd Administrator Boyd DNA Project     Generations Percentage 2 16.55% 4 46.30% 6 70.63% 8 85.51% 10 93.33% 12 97.08% 14 98.77% 16 99.50% 18 99.80% 20 99.92% 22 99.97% 24 99.99% 26 100.00%   http://www.familytreedna.com/public/boyddnanet/default.aspx?section=yresults --- On Sat, 1/29/11, Mike Boyd <mikejboyd@bigpond.com> wrote: From: Mike Boyd <mikejboyd@bigpond.com> Subject: Boyd DNA - R-U198 Haploid group To: BOYD-L@rootsweb.com, "Jeri Ann Boyd" <boyddna@sbcglobal.net> Date: Saturday, January 29, 2011, 9:05 AM David Boyd of Maryland wrote to me a few days ago and advised that that his DNA test had come back as R-U198 Haploid group.
