It is the county seat of Lackawanna County[3] and the largest principal city in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre metropolitan area. According to figures released by the United States Census Bureau in2000, the city had a total population of 76,415 (2009 estimate: 71,944). Scranton is Pennsylvania's seventh most populous city afterPhiladelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, Reading, and Bethlehem.[1] Scranton is the geographic and cultural center of the Lackawanna River valley. It is the largest city located in a contiguous quilt-work of former anthracite coal mining communities including the smaller cities of Wilkes-Barre, Pittston, and Carbondale. Scranton was incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1856, and as a city on April 23, 1866. Humble beginnings (1776–1845) Present-day Scranton and the surrounding area had been inhabited by the native Lenape tribe, from whose language "Lackawanna" (or "le-can-hanna", meaning "stream that forks") is derived. Gradually, settlers from New England came to the area in the late 18th century, establishing mills and other small businesses, and their village became known as Slocum Hollow. Isaac Tripp, known as the first settler, built his home here in 1778, which still stands in the Providence section of the city as a testament to this era. 3. So the question is are the second batch of Boyd's part of Allison and Hannah Boyd's family or from a separate Boyd family? MY GUESS IS FROM THE AGE, that they are part of Allison and Hannah's family. For what that is worth Brenda. The second question is - where there any other Boyd families Madison County, Arkansas? As Madison County, is in the NW corner of Arkansas and close to the border with Missouri, it could mean that Allison Boyd's family came down from one of the Missouri families. 1. Re: [BOYD] Brick Wall - Arthur James Boyd (1778-1870) later of Rush, Indiana
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. John Firstly, where was Arthur James Boyd married in 1802? I would assume PA as his second marriage to Nancy Jane Rankin in about 1804 you have down as PA. ii) If if you know the places of marriage you will need to look at the 1800 Census for PA for that are ato see what Boyd's are listed. He MAY HAVE BEEN LIVING AT HOME, so you will nee dto note ALL THE BOYDS in that location and even the County. iii) In chapter 5/267, which I was initially given data in June 1998, I have that his father was:- 5/267 BOYD OF BEAVER CREEK, HARRISON Co., KY English format - day/mouth/year The origins of this family is from either PA or Va. Where they came from before that has yet to be found. [NEED TO FIND WHAT RELIGION THEY WERE WHICH MIGHT HELP IN FINDING ORIGINS] T1 Robert Boyd/Boid, bc / /1750 ( ), d / /1827 ( , Harrison County, Kentucky), bu , m / /177x ( , ), wife not given, dau of and (nee ) ??, b 17xx ( ), d / /18xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- [Lived: ] - This Robert resided at and appeared on the tax list for Harrison Co. Ky from 1791-1827. (FN - Information on Robert's birth and death given to John H. Boyd by Judy Gustafson.) From this it could be assumed he lived in Harrison Co at the time of his death. [Possible areas for research:- 1. 1790 US Census for KY; PA and VA 2. Was he in the War of Independence? Could not see any suitable candidates from Jean's DAR Patriot Index list. 5 Robert Boyd's - nearest one is born 1757. 3. Do Ky death certificates in mid 1800's have parents names. From Robert's children should then be able to get their mother's name. this would help with IGI records and possibly any records/published material on that family. Assume too early for birth records for Robert's children. 4. Could you be looking for a Robert whose father was Arthur or James?] >From the limited information currently available it is thought the following are all or some of his children. [JUDY NEED TO LOOK AT INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGICAL INDEX FOR KY, PA AND VA WHICH MIGHT HELP CONFIRM LOCATIONS FOR BIRTHS AND MARRIAGES - LDS do not seem to publish many death even though I have been told they have collected cemetery records.] U1 Arthur James Boyd, Sr., b 8/2/1778 ( , Co., PA), d 8/9/1870 ( , Co., Indiana), bu , m 2/12/1802 ( Church, , Ky), Molly Lewis, dau of and (nee ) Lewis, b 17xx ( ), d / /18xx ( ), bu , and had issue:- ? he might have m 2ndly / /180x ( , , Cumberland Co., PA.) Jane Rankin, dau of and (nee ) Rankin, and had issue:- he appears to have m 3rdly Jane Adair Holliday [Lived: ] - Arthur's place of birth and date & place of death and place of marriage to Jane Rankin from John H. Boyd. The names James was supplied by Judy Gustafson. [NEED TO CONFIRM WITH JOHN THAT ARTHUR DID MARRY 3 TIMES] (iv) Seeing you said that Arthur James was born in PA, I have pulled all the Robert Boyd from the 1790 US Census which are:- BOYD,Robert PA Co:Allegheny Twp:Unknown BOYD,Robert PA Co:Allegheny Twp:Unknown BOYD,Robert PA Co:Bedford Twp:Unknown BOYD,Robert PA Co:York Twp:Unknown But his is not consistant with the data in chapter 5/267 that Robert Boyd had moved to KY in 1791. If the family came from PA, it has most likely moved down to Virginia before going to KY. So do you have locations for where the children were born? 1. [BOYD] Boyds in Christchurch New Zealand
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. I am aware that part of the Boyd family from Rowallan Mill, Fenwick lives in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have not been in contact with them for over a decade, so I can't advise you how they faired in yesterdays earthquake. I assume that they are not the only Boyd family in this Zone. I was planning to ask some people that lived across the road from me, who returned to Christchurch in October last year, if they could do a look up in the phone book for me this week, so that I could ask them to organise a Boyd meeting in May when I return from the USA. That will have to wait a few weeks now. The husband was out in in car and went straight home to find his dog comforting his wife amidst a sea of shattered crockery and tipped-over furniture. So I assume that their house is safe. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS Brisbane, Aust.

    3.  The Boyds and Drakes in Madison Co., Arkansas often marry each other, atleast that is what I have come to find.  There are numerous Boyds in this area.  Randolph Boyd (1863-?) and Ida Josephine Johnson (1872-1910) had 7 children: Gracie A 1892 Emmet C 1893 Bert A 1895 Milton Harvey 1897-1991  1st spouse is Chloe Lela Ritchie 2nd spouse Elizabeth Drake m 17 Jan 1924.  Milton and Elizabeth had 2 children            together Mildred and Mary Mattie 1899 Maggie 1902 Elmer C 1908   Allison Boyd (1838-1912) the father of Randolph was born in Warren Co., TN then moved to Madison Co., AR.  Hannah Drake (1836-1892) the wife of Allison was also born in Warren Co., TN.  They had 7 children together and were married about 1857.  Allison then married Margaret E in  1892 and they had 2 children together.  I have more information as well, just let me know.  I am trying to get my Boyd list together to give to Mike so he can add it to his stuff.  Aldina A Addison Life's a journey not a destination ________________________________ From: Mike Boyd <mikejboyd@bigpond.com> To: Charivari2@aol.com; glenpoolgal@sbcglobal.net; boyd@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, February 22, 2011 9:08:15 PM Subject: Re: [BOYD] Randolph Boyd born Feb 1863 State of Arkansas County ofMadison Ri... 3. Marriage Bond and record of marriage for Molly Lewis in 1802 are in Harrison County, Kentucky Marriage to Nancy Jane Rankin is supposed to be recorded in "Marriages by Rev John Linn, Centre Presbyterian Church", and is listed on the Indiana State Library Genealogy Division Web Site. My current thinking is that Robert was the son of James Boyd, married to Martha Burns. I'll make up a Family Group Sheet tomorrow for each of the three families and send them to you. -----Original Message----- From: Mike Boyd [mailto:mikejboyd@bigpond.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 22, 2011 7:15 PM To: John Boyd; Boyd@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOYD] Brick Wall - Arthur James Boyd (1778-1870) later of Rush, Indiana John Firstly, where was Arthur James Boyd married in 1802? 3. Rhonda At the bottom of the original message that Mindy sent it has an source in the DAR book saying that it was from Boyd, History of East Tennessee - I think the book was cited as. I was not sure if it was a Boyd book or a book on East Tennessee with a Boyd section. I am still trying to get people to find venues for me to have meetings/talks with people in Tennessee. I have 5 days after the Greensboro Games on Saturday 30 April before I need to fly out of TN to get to Sacromento on Friday 6 May. So I am quite happy to do a talk on each day those 5 days as long as I can get from one venue to another, by train, bus or car. 1. Re: [BOYD] Randolph Boyd born Feb 1863 State of Arkansas County of Madison Ri...
    2. Well, don't worry about being new to the list; even us "old codgers" make some horrendous mistakes on here sometimes! I did find your Randolph on the 1870 Fed'l Census, if that helps any. Your Randolph was 7 years old and his father was 32 year old Allison Boyd. On the handwritten form he IS said to be a male, although today we think of that as a feminine name. His wife is Hannah Boyd, 34 years old. Also, the Boyd is spelled Boid in every case. There is John W.-12yrs., Willas - 9yrs., your Randolph -7yrs., and Wilborn R. -1yr. Then there is another family with the last name Drake living with them and just looking at someone's family tree on ancestry.com, it appears that Hannah's maiden name was Drake, if the submission is correct. The Drakes have three very young children. Below that appears the Boid name again. There is Margrett A. Boid, 13 yrs. and James M. Boid, 10 yrs. Maybe this gives you some more to work with!
