    1. [BOYD] Auckland meeting/history talk - Thursday 12 May 2011
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. On my way back from doing a talking tour and going to 3 Highland Games in the USA, I will be spending the night at Auckland, New Zealand. Boyd Miller (of Hauraki, North Shore - (boydm@vodafone.net.nz) & Murray Reid have kindly agreed to hold a meeting on Thursday evening in Auckland. So if you are a Boyd or Boyd researcher in Auckland or on the North Island of New Zealand you may wish to contact Boyd Miller about attending this meeting. I will not only give you an outline of our Boyd history for the last 900 years, but try to help those that are starting their Boyd research or who have hit a brick wall in Ireland or Scotland. I will be leaving this Thursday 14 April to go to the USA, so you will need to contact Boyd on the venue and time. Thank you Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee House of Boyd Society

Mike Boyd Chairman Historical Committee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: Marla Fair To: Mike Boyd Sent: Saturday, April 09, 2011 11:36 AM Subject: Re: Mike Boyd visit to Dayton area of Ohio The meeting in the Dayton Ohio area will be held April 20th, 2011 from 6:00 to app. 8:45 at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center in Troy OH. www.troyhayner.org Troy is near the southwest corner of the state, in Miami County, and is app. 1 to 1 1/2 hours from Cincinnati and Columbus, OH, and Richmond, IN. It is about 2 hours south of Toledo, OH. The city is located a few miles east of I-75. The Hayner is located on Main Street, which is also the State Route 41 exit off of I-75. We will meet in one of the rooms on the first floor. If anyone needs directions or suggestions for hotels and places to eat, feel free to email me at dfair@woh.rr.com Troy was established in 1814 and still has many of its original downtown buildings, as well as one of the premiere courthouses of the state, built during the Victorian era. You can check out the city here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy,_Ohio (I’ve cited the wiki page as it shows the town better than our own mainstreet page and all of the info appears to be correct). There are many nice photos here as well: http://www.city-data.com/city/Troy-Ohio.html As with the others, if you are planning on attending the Troy meeting, please contact me at the above email address. 2. Mike Boyd
    3. I was just reading another Email from Bob Boyd (Email b1927@comcast.net) and it would appear that Red Roof Inn, near him, has an small meeting space where I could talk to people from the Nashville, TN area or those Counties around it. So Bob, can you give the Red Roof Inn's address please? I will make sure that I am able to leave the TN State Library and be at Red Roof Inn by 6 pm on Wednesday evening Thank you Mike Boyd

    1. [BOYD] Meeting with Mike Boyd in Nashville or Memphis, TN Wed. 4 May and/or Thursday 5 May
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Bob Boyd of Nashville has just advise me that because of his age that he is not able to organise a meeting for me in Nashville, TN - which is an rich area for Boyd descendants. I will be coming from Knoxville, TN on Wednesday 4 May with Kathy Manning. I understand this is about a 3 hour car drive, so we should be there by 12 noon. I would then like to go to the TN State Library to see the work of the late Linda Lawhon and her family from, Iredell Co., NC. I will have to check with Mindy of Washington Co., PA who tells me that she has the Scott Lee Boyd book of 1935 which outlines the family of William Boyd whom I understand had a son Robert Boyd in 1728 (but I have not seen any details about this Robert Boyd). The same year and general location that Linda's Robert Boyd is said to have been born. This is the same Boyd family that Belle Boyd the southern spy belongs to, so it will be interesting to see if the DNA between Robert Boyd born 1729, who married Eleanor McCullock and that of this William Boyd's family might match. I will have to be in Memphis TN on Thursday night, so I can pick up a flight Friday morning Sacromento, CA. I am booked into the Quality Inn Airport Graceland. So that might be able to be used as a venue. At this stage I am not sure how I will get from Nashville to Memphis - either Amtrack or by bus. Thank you Mike Boyd

    1. [BOYD] Mike Boyd talk in Knoxville, Tennessee, May 3
    2. Kathy Manning
    3. Mike Boyd of Brisbane, Australia, clan Boyd historian, will speak on Boyd family history at the East Tennessee History Center auditorium on Tuesday, May 3, at noon. The program is free. The History Center is located in downtown Knoxville at the corner of Gay Street and Clinch Avenue. The State Street parking garage is just a short walk, one block east of the building. If you have been on the Boyd genealogy e-mail list but have not made any posts yourself, now would be a great chance to get some in-person advice about your Boyd family tree, including families that married into the Boyds. If you have already made some progress on your Boyd family tree, please bring a copy of it with you to Mike's talk. Who knows, you might meet a long-lost relative there. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Kathy Manning

    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Thank you Kim I would encourage anyone who has had family in the USA from 1860 to USE THIS FREE SERVICE while it is FREE. So you can check any of your mid 1800's male descendants - both Boyd and non Boyd names - so you can build on the data that you already might have on your family. I think we have seen in the past that some came down from Canada to fight. And there may be one or two from Ireland who came over to get involved as well. While if your family comes from South America, it may mean that you family might have been from the Southern States of the USA and migrated after 1865 to the County your family are now living in. So check out these data bases. 1. [BOYD] Robert Boyd/Elizabeth Rakes Family
    2. HAROLD R. BOYD
    3. Dear Cousins: On July 23rd, I will reach my 75th birthday, I have been researching my Boyd Family since 1977, I'm probably more familiar with these Boyd's than anyone I am aware of. In an effort to provide you current information, I present the following information: 1) Robert Boyd was born about 1780, most probably in Virginia. He's usually found in Franklin and Patrick Counties. Until recently we thought he had died about 1830, this date is the one found in Lehman Tiller's BOYD Book, referred to by Charlene B. Kemp. After some Deed research last year by S.D. Kirby and myself, we are now of the opinion he had died as early as 1814. Elizabeth (Rakes) his wife bought Property fron Joseph Boyd in 1815, ti's appears she is probably a Widow ar that date. 2) Elizabeth Rakes was born about 1793, most likely in Franklin County where Most Rakes lived at the time. Elizabeth's Father is Charles RAKES, her mother has always been JANE (?) whos is said to be an INDIAN Woman. No marriage date for Charles and Jane exists that i'm aware of. There is another marriage attributed to Charles Rakes to Nancy Hubbard of 22 May 1827, Patrick County, Virginia. Charles dob is reported as 1745 in Virginia. If this date is accurate, then Charles would hav Eighty-two (82) in 1827. There is reason to believe there is also a Charles Rakes, Jr. I personally believe Jr. is who married Nancy Hubbard. More recently, submissions mainly on Ancestry are showing JANE as HUBBARD also. In over 30 years tracking thes Family members I have NEVER seen anything documenting Jane's name as HUBBARD. My opinion is such information is TOTALLY FALSE. 3) Robert and Elizabeth (Rakes) Boyd's children are proven in Patrick County Court Records. Elizabeth sold sold 20 ac. property to Samuel Rakes (her Brother), this Deed recorded December 1831 and designates their children and heirs as: 1) Elisha Boyd 2) Edward Arrington and Leony (Ona) his wife, formerly Leony Boyd 3) Samuel Boyd 4) ELISHA BOYD was born about 1807, roughly confirmed by Census Records. It does appear he was Born in Patrick County. Elisha married LEAH COCKRAM, 18 Nov 1830, in Franklin County, where the Cockram,s lived. Leah was born about 1810 in Franklin County. In all census records where she's found she is always ten (10) years younger. Elisha and Leah are found in Census Records as follows: 1840--Russell County, Virginia *Leah is found in BuCoVA census, age (70), in household of Son ISAAC and wife. 1850--Russell County, Virginia 1860--Buchanan County, Virginia Elisha died at Vandyke, Buchanan County on 3 Oct 1865, cause not known. Elisha's widow LEAH and none of her family have been found in any 1870 Census, apparently because they were in route to UTAH, having joined the Mormon Church in 1869 Elisha and LEAH's children, in order of birth follows: 1) Robert, born abt 1834, Franklin County 2) Sarah Leah (Sally), born abt 1838, Franklin (?) County. 3) John born abt 1840, Russell County Virginia. John was killed by a group of Yankees 4 Oct 1865, near his home. Buchanan County was under Military rule at this time. 4) Isham Boyd, born 7 Jan 1841, Russell Co., VA Isham died 28 Dec 1908, Vandyke, Buchanan Co., VA 5) Isaac Boyd, born 7 Apr 1843, Russell Co., Va Isaac died 3 Mar 1932, Marvin, BuCoVA. (My Gr.Grandfather) 6) Samuel Boyd, born 25 Oct 1845, Russell Co., VA, he died 15 Jan 1918, of Pneumonia at Whitewood, Buchanan Co., VA. 7) William born abt 1848, Russell County, VA., died 6 Jun 1854 in Russell County, Virginia. About 15 years ago, some information appeared, from someone in North Carolina that Elisha and Leah had a daughter named Christina (Christiana), who married Charles (H.) ARRINGTON on 23 Dec 1853, Patrick County, Virginia. She and Charles Arrington are later found in Heard County, Georgia. Christina is found in Lehman Tiller,s (Info provided by me) BOYD Family Book, referred to by Charlene B. Kemp. We have concluded that Christina is NOT Elisha and Leah,s daughter, but is actually dau. of an ELIAS BOYD, spouse unknown. Elias Boyd Can be found in Heard co., GA also, but apparently moved to Alabama. Great Grand mother LEAH COCKRAM is referred by some as Ella Leah, but she is always LEAH in all census where she is found. She is LEAH at her baptism Oct 1869. Great Grandmother LEAH's Sister MARY married Jonathan Hale of Franklin County, Virginia. The HALE'S were in Russell and Buchanan where one married into Charlene Kemp's Boyd Family. They apparently re- ferred to LEAH as "Aunt ELLA", which is likely the source of "ELLA", a nickname. There is no evidence ELLA was her given name. Sincerely, H R Boyd

    3. List members and those Boyd attending the Games at Las Vegas. Could you bring your thoughts about how the Society can expand or ways to make it expand. Or spread the word that there is a House of Boyd Society working to make the name Boyd known to its descendants. Plus how we can expand the Clan Boyd Pyramid. Hopefully, I can talk to those attending about becoming a State Historian for your State or part of the State, as a means to find known Boyd families or to contact researchers about their Boyd branches on other named or location Net groups. I assume that Lauren will want to also talk to people attending about becoming State Convenors or representing the Society at your home Highland Games. His daughter Elizabeth married Nathan Woodbury, of Beverly, MA, who is also in the 1790 census adjacent to Dugal Boyd in Fallowfield Township, Washington County and adjacent to the property of Col. William Crawford. Some 1790 census transcriptions wrongly show Nathan's surname as Goodbury a misreading of the cursive script. Dugal came from County Antrim in Ireland in the ship Belinda arriving at Philadelphia July 14, 1746 and was indentured in Philadelphia County, PA to Samuel Vernon "for five years for 14 pounds consideration, customary dues." Lynn also advised that the family had been traced back to Scotland by [PUT IN DETAILS] who is now dead. It is not know where is research is now on this aspect. He went over to Ireland and traced James back to Scotland. Lynn is not aware of how this was done. They came from Ireland with two children. They lived with a John and Mary (nee Fulton) Boyd (see Chapter 4/244) and then moved to Tuscarawas County Ohio in 1810. James was the Justice of the Peace in 1822 and Union Township Magistrate in 1833. He also built and ran the Black Horse tavern which was located on the New Philadelphia Road and the Cadiz. There is alot of history that goes along with the tavern. There was a double murder there. Also James fought in the war of 1812. He also bought substantial amounts of land in Tuscarawas, Allen and Auglaize Counties. They were pioneers in Ohio by being original landowners in Tuscarawas and Allen counties. James had five original land grants or patents in Ohio. The first was for 80 acres in Tuscarawas county, Mill Township, dated 25 September 1821. However according to Beer's history of that county [NEED FULL TITLE], James was amongst the first settlers who arrived between 1808 and 1812. The Tuscarawas county recorder has 14 land transactions lister between 1820 and 1836 for James and Bridget Boyd. In Allen county they purchased four quarter sections of 40 to 80 acres each. The date of all these transactions were all 16 January 1836. The Allen county Recorder has not been asked to list all of James and Brdiget's land transactions, but it is assumed to be considerable since his four land grants are in three different sections indicating that he may have bought it for trading stock. >From his land deals in these two counties, selling in Tuscarawas and buying in Allen, James and bridget are assumed to have moved to Allen County in about 1836. By the spread of the children I would expect that perhaps at least two additional children were born to James and Bridget - one perhaps in 1802 and a second in 1806. >From the 1994 IGI for the UK it has this entry:- James BOYD (M).................. B: Feb 1771 B: Cleared Ba: 5009320 5 Spouse: Bridget Reed FORSTER , Tyrone, Ireland E: Cleared So: 1553414 ?From the way that this Batch number is writen, it normally means that the researcher did not know this John Boyd's parents. It would also be interesting to know why a County Tyrone Boyd family came to live with Boyds form the Coleraine area of Couty Londonderry. Did these Boyd sponsor John and Bridget Boyd's family? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee PS I have an third Boyd family in Chap 6/307 but I can't put my hands on that folder at present. So I will search for it when I return from the USA and New Zealand.

    3. The first known Boyd family in Westmoreland Co., PA (i) Ch 3/185 BOYD OF Nth or Sth HUNTINGDON Twp, WESTMORELAND Co., PA U1? John Boyd (bc1763 - d 1840) m 180x (location unknown), Rachel Waters, dau of Samuel Waters from Maryland. [This John Boyd's father MIGHT BE Samuel Boyd listed in the 1790 US Census at South Huntingdon] Known children: Nancy Hawkins, Charlotte Hawkins, Jane Hawkins, Eliza Lauphrey, Andrew (and his wife Martha), William John, James and Stephen Boyd. It is not know when this family settled in Westmoreland Co., PA. He might be the John Boyd shown in Derry Twp, however he is more likely to be the son of the Samuel Boyd of South Huntingdon Twp, as it would appear that he married after 1790. If you have any details on any of these children could you please tell the list Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
