Judith Spears has outlined what she is able to do in the e-mail below. I think she's more than generous! Thank you, Judith! Can someone meet me in the Morgantown, WV area on Tuesday the 26th and get Mike to Charleston, WV? If you can't set up a meeting in Charleston, WV or Lexington, KY, at least offer to take Mike to where there are some history centers or genealogical societies, please. See below. Dear cousins, just because you're the state historian sure doesn't mean you know everything that's going on in your assigned state! Does anyone know any more about this meeting that Mike posted for Elizabeth, PA at 6:00 on Monday, April 25? Is it still "on?" Where is it? If you know anything about it, please share your info with the members of this list. Also, does anyone know how Mike is getting from western PA into KY? It would seem to be an ideal time for him to have a meeting in West Virginia on his way into KY. It looks like he could have a meeting in Charleston, WV on Tuesday evening and then in Lexington, KY, Wednesday mid-day. It looks like there is a tentative plan for a meeting late Wednesday in Floyd County, KY. Are there any list members that live along the interstates that lead to these cities? I don't know if Judith Spears or David Boyd are planning on doing all this driving to get him from one place to another and public transportation is not always available. I might be able to drive out for the Monday night meeting, if someone tells me where it is and then Tuesday AM, I could drive Mike down to the Morgantown area where I-79 and I-68 converge. Someone would have to meet us there and take him on into Charleston, if one can arrange a meeting there. Then someone would have to take him on into KY. Mike is a wonderful source of information, has a very good personality and a good sense of humor and is not at all intimidating, so surely someone can "step up to the plate." If someone else has already worked out these plans and it's already set, then PLEASE let the rest of us know. Write it in big red letters with flashing lights! I was just now looking for an updated list of Mike's meetings while in the U.S. this time, but I see it hasn't been changed since the meetings of last October. Is there an active web master on our Boyd List? Or, could we get one that could become active with a little encouragement? Charlene Boyd Kemp

Hi Mike I forwarded your email on to a few of my Boyd relatives in Auckland. There are a very large number of Boyd families in the Auckland area. I suggest you drop a line to the Auckland Herald newspaper and they just might advertise your visit more widely. So if you would like to come or assist them in contact know Boyd researchers please Email one of them. I expect that the meeting will start about 6 pm, to allow those outside of Auckland to have time to drive home. While I have yet to book my accommodation in Auckland for Thursday night, I am hoping to get something that is not to expensive near the Airport which has a room that the meeting can be held in. Hopefully I will know those details this week. When I do I will post to the list. Even though I live in Australia, I have only been to Auckland once, in 1974, so now being retired I have no idea when I next might get to New Zealand. I will provide an outline of Clan Boyd's History since 1111 AD, its origins, Cadet Branches, Spread in Scotland outside of Ayrshire, the Battles it was involved in etc and help anyone who wishes to start to do their family tree to get started and also help anyone to link their family to the 630 known Boyd families that I have been able to collect to date. Since 2004, I have made 8 trips to either Scotland or Ireland looking for know/published Boyd families. Many of these I have yet to enter onto my PC for example, I estimate when I went to Scotland and Ireland last year I found an estimated 400 new Boyd families plus another 100 or so in the USA. Hopefully, I can get time remaining to sorted out the 10 or so folders and typed then up before I leave to go to America I would expect that many of the New Zealand Boyds came from Scotland rather than from Ireland. And that members of the meeting will "educate" me about the migrations to NZ. So hopefully we can get some NZ stories written for editor Kevin and Dean Road. G'Day all These miscellaneous New Zealand Boyd records may help someone with their Boyd research. The areas they relate to are New Zealand; Scotland, Australia, and Oregon USA. None are directly related to my Boyd line Good Hunting Brian Boyd Melbourne Australia Alexandra (New Zealand) Presbyterian Church - The Alexandra marriage register commences in 1868 when the Parish was formally established. A "gap" exists in the register between October 1871 and July 1877 during which time the Parish was vacant (i.e. without a Minister). Mr Boyd, a Student Missionary, was appointed in 1874 however he was not able to perform marriage ceremonies until after he was licensed and ordained in 1877. During the period 1871 to 1877, Presbyterian Marriages must either have been performed out of town by other Ministers or even by Ministers of other denominations in the town. "Union" Church services and sharing of Ministers were not uncommon in these early years. The Minister at Alexandra, the Rev Alexander Watson, recorded in 1910 that few early records of Presbyterian work in the district (prior to 1879) were held. A Deacon's Court minute book is held from the formation of the Parish in 1868 however a Session was not formed until 1879 when minutes commence. Dear Cousins: I am heading out at 4am for Las Vegas. This week has been an adventure that involved $1200 in auto repairs, and considerable stress when hearing the necessary part was on National back order.... and 30 people ahead of us! Well, our wonderful new mechanic had the part made for us! Just got the car back late this afternoon. Word from the good folks at the Las Vegas Celtic Festival and Highland Games: _______________________________ Your time slot for the AGM is from 9:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. on SUNDAY. If you run over until 11:45 a.m., that's ok as no one is scheduled right after your Clan. Be sure to let your Clan members know that there's still time to register for the Shortbread baking contest. Details are on our website. Fill out the registration form online, bring it with you, and you can pay your fee at the event up until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. FYI - to clarify the rules: we're not keeping or publishing recipes. They are only to prove the authenticity of the submissions, and to protect the public and the Games from mishaps due to food allergies. If you submit a separate list of ingredients without quantities that can be verified against the recipe, the recipe can then be returned and we will only need to retain the ingredients list. Be sure that your name, address, and phone number are listed on both the recipe and the ingredients list. See you on the 15th for set up. Cheers, Lynne ____________________________ I am looking forward to seeing all of you that can make it! Yours Aye, Lauren Lauren Boyd McLachlan President, House of Boyd Society http://www.clanboyd.org
I can't recall if an venue has been decided for Las Vegas on Friday evening. So I will try to sort something out tomorrow night when I arrive. I therefore suggest that we meet at 5.30 pm at Fitzgerald's reception - 301 Fremont Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101 - and then we can go to the meeting at 6 pm. Thank you Mike Boyd
If anyone on this list is living in Christchurch or around Christchurch, I will be staying at the Sudima Hotel at Cnr Memorial Ave & Orchard Rd, Christchurch. Hopefully I can get back from Kaikoura by 6 pm to meet anyone who wants to meet me. Thank you Mike Boyd
On Friday 13 May 2011, I will be landing at Christchuirch and driving up to see Muray Boyd and any other Boyds in that area. I will be staying the night at his Hotel, Donegal House, SchoolHouse Road, Kaikoura. So if any one wants to talke to me or have me tell then about Boyd history form 1111 AD, I would be quite happy to meet with you on that Friday evening I will be leaving in the morning to go to the USA, so if you wish to come could you please let Murray know on the above Email. Thank you Mike Boyd
Thanks Harold for the information. Glad to know there are still some of oldies around researching (I will be 73 way to soon!) I've been at it just about as long as you have and still haven't found George and Mary Boyd once they left VA - if they did leave!! -----Original Message----- From: HAROLD R. BOYD Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 11:05 PM To: boyd@rootsweb.com Cc: Bill Boyd Subject: [BOYD] Robert Boyd/Elizabeth Rakes Family Dear Cousins: On July 23rd, I will reach my 75th birthday, I have been researching my Boyd Family since 1977, I'm probably more familiar with these Boyd's than anyone I am aware of. In an effort to provide you current information, I present the following information: 1) Robert Boyd was born about 1780, most probably in Virginia. He's usually found in Franklin and Patrick Counties. Until recently we thought he had died about 1830, this date is the one found in Lehman Tiller's BOYD Book, referred to by Charlene B. Kemp. After some Deed research last year by S.D. Kirby and myself, we are now of the opinion he had died as early as 1814. Elizabeth (Rakes) his wife bought Property fron Joseph Boyd in 1815, ti's appears she is probably a Widow ar that date. 2) Elizabeth Rakes was born about 1793, most likely in Franklin County where Most Rakes lived at the time. Elizabeth's Father is Charles RAKES, her mother has always been JANE (?) whos is said to be an INDIAN Woman. No marriage date for Charles and Jane exists that i'm aware of. There is another marriage attributed to Charles Rakes to Nancy Hubbard of 22 May 1827, Patrick County, Virginia. Charles dob is reported as 1745 in Virginia. If this date is accurate, then Charles would hav Eighty-two (82) in 1827. There is reason to believe there is also a Charles Rakes, Jr. I personally believe Jr. is who married Nancy Hubbard. More recently, submissions mainly on Ancestry are showing JANE as HUBBARD also. In over 30 years tracking thes Family members I have NEVER seen anything documenting Jane's name as HUBBARD. My opinion is such information is TOTALLY FALSE. 3) Robert and Elizabeth (Rakes) Boyd's children are proven in Patrick County Court Records. Elizabeth sold sold 20 ac. property to Samuel Rakes (her Brother), this Deed recorded December 1831 and designates their children and heirs as: 1) Elisha Boyd 2) Edward Arrington and Leony (Ona) his wife, formerly Leony Boyd 3) Samuel Boyd 4) ELISHA BOYD was born about 1807, roughly confirmed by Census Records. It does appear he was Born in Patrick County. Elisha married LEAH COCKRAM, 18 Nov 1830, in Franklin County, where the Cockram,s lived. Leah was born about 1810 in Franklin County. In all census records where she's found she is always ten (10) years younger. Elisha and Leah are found in Census Records as follows: 1840--Russell County, Virginia *Leah is found in BuCoVA census, age (70), in household of Son ISAAC and wife. 1850--Russell County, Virginia 1860--Buchanan County, Virginia Elisha died at Vandyke, Buchanan County on 3 Oct 1865, cause not known. Elisha's widow LEAH and none of her family have been found in any 1870 Census, apparently because they were in route to UTAH, having joined the Mormon Church in 1869 Elisha and LEAH's children, in order of birth follows: 1) Robert, born abt 1834, Franklin County 2) Sarah Leah (Sally), born abt 1838, Franklin (?) County. 3) John born abt 1840, Russell County Virginia. John was killed by a group of Yankees 4 Oct 1865, near his home. Buchanan County was under Military rule at this time. 4) Isham Boyd, born 7 Jan 1841, Russell Co., VA Isham died 28 Dec 1908, Vandyke, Buchanan Co., VA 5) Isaac Boyd, born 7 Apr 1843, Russell Co., Va Isaac died 3 Mar 1932, Marvin, BuCoVA. (My Gr.Grandfather) 6) Samuel Boyd, born 25 Oct 1845, Russell Co., VA, he died 15 Jan 1918, of Pneumonia at Whitewood, Buchanan Co., VA. 7) William born abt 1848, Russell County, VA., died 6 Jun 1854 in Russell County, Virginia. About 15 years ago, some information appeared, from someone in North Carolina that Elisha and Leah had a daughter named Christina (Christiana), who married Charles (H.) ARRINGTON on 23 Dec 1853, Patrick County, Virginia. She and Charles Arrington are later found in Heard County, Georgia. Christina is found in Lehman Tiller,s (Info provided by me) BOYD Family Book, referred to by Charlene B. Kemp. We have concluded that Christina is NOT Elisha and Leah,s daughter, but is actually dau. of an ELIAS BOYD, spouse unknown. Elias Boyd Can be found in Heard co., GA also, but apparently moved to Alabama. Great Grand mother LEAH COCKRAM is referred by some as Ella Leah, but she is always LEAH in all census where she is found. She is LEAH at her baptism Oct 1869. Great Grandmother LEAH's Sister MARY married Jonathan Hale of Franklin County, Virginia. The HALE'S were in Russell and Buchanan where one married into Charlene Kemp's Boyd Family. They apparently re- ferred to LEAH as "Aunt ELLA", which is likely the source of "ELLA", a nickname. There is no evidence ELLA was her given name. Sincerely, H R Boyd _______________________________________ House of Boyd Society's (HBS) Annual General Meeting (AGM) & Gathering of the Clan 2011 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA in conjunction with The Highland Games and Celtic Gathering April 16-17, 2011. I will look forward to seeing and talking to people from all 4 States. Hopefully, I can give you a very good outline of Clan Boyd History and also be able to help both experienced and new family tree searchers. This in turn will allow you to pass this onto your own Boyd family or any other Boyd you might meet in future. One of the most important roles that list members can do is to tell other Boyds about the BOYD@rootsweb.com net list, where they can share their family tree, news about their own family or other Boyd issues like medical problems, etc, and that there is an House of Boyd Society - because they are not the only Boyds in the World. As Judith recently pointed out, "the talk will be appropriate for veteran genealogists and those just starting to explore their family history. If you have a family tree, please print it out or put it on a thumb drive and bring it to the meeting. Mike has collected over 640 individual Boyd families and is working towards connecting all of these families together." Please join us for sharing family trees and for the amazing history of Clan Boyd in beautiful, mountain surroundings of Waynesville (Haywood County), North Carolina. RSVP to me, please? This way I can let the kind folks at Boyd Mountain know how many chairs to have for us, and how many refreshments I should bring. Thank you so much! List members this sounds like a good place to stay over night if you are going East or West or North or South through North Carolina I am sure that Dan and Betsy Boyd of "Clinch Valley Cabin" at Boyd Mountain, Waynesville, Haywood County, NC would welcome a visit form any Boyd or Boyd descendants when you might be travelling this summer (and any future trip). Members On the point of long last cousins - there are about 28 generations in the Boyd of Kilmarnock. So that would make and of us at least 26th cousin. However in the USA we might get that down to about 15th or 10th cousins. However, at Edinburgh in 2009 2 ladies were waiting to talk to me about their tree and lived only 18 miles apart and found out that they there 2nd or 3rd cousins but did not know the other person was related. So yes you may find some "close" cousins when you come to this meeting. Members I would like to thank Kathy for organising this meeting. Tennessee, is one of those states where many Boyd families went from Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and I also think from Georgia and Alabama. So if you still have "cousins" living in East and or central TN you may like to advise them of this meeting. I suspect at my age - being a young 66 - it is very unlikely that I will be able to arrange another visit to this area. I look forward to seeing as many as I can to be able to pass on my knowledge about the Clan's history and to help people work their way back through their ancestors to the Central Stem of the Boyd family of Kilmarnock. Normally from last years trip these meeting talk about 3 hours. But Kathy was one of those ladies had me talking for 6 hours at Abington, VA.
