Michelle When are the HBS members fees due? When I was in Roseville, CA staying with Lauren and Kevin, Kevin had some 28 or 30 pages ready to go for the next issue of Dean Road. I did not get an chance to read what he had put together but I am sure it will be interesting to members both old and new, so I would not like to see anyone miss out on this information because they had not renewed their membership. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, hBS

As many of you will know it is Summer in the Northern Hemisphere, so people will be travelling some distance to visit where there families came from. During my trip in April/May, this year, I meet a number of people that said that there were going to go places a few thousand miles away from home to visit where the relatives came from. Therefore, if you plan travel this Summer, please tell the list where you are going - Town/Township, County and State - and what period you are looking at for your family. Plus when you expect to be there in these locations. I am sure that there are several hundreds of people on this list, so you should find someone that is local to that area that can tell you about local holidays, where cemeteries are etc. So tell the list if you are going to be searching for your Boyd relatives this summer. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Hi all, We're in Alabama and will be in the Huntsville area for about 3 days; after that we're heading for Abbeville, SC where my earliest Boyd lived in the late 1700s. Anybody around that area know what might be available in local historical societies and/or libraries? Just in case, you can contact me offline...thanks! Members of this list may find this a valuable source to find their ancestors if they came from Ayrshire between 1845 and 1912. Folks After giving this talk at Boyd's Mountain, Wayneville, where the host Besty Boyd gave me her husband's family tree. The following day I was at Knoxville, TN and was looking at a Buncombe Co., NC book which gave me their family which starts with a James Boyd who came from County Tyrone, Ireland. This is a county where quite a number of Boyd families settled. I have yet to even look at the papers that I collected during my trip to see that I have the "right" family, but Betsy if you have joined this list, it will be a week or so before I get to that task to give you the title of this book on Buncombe co., NC history. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michelle Ligon" <mich9118@bellsouth.net> To: <boyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2011 9:40 PM Subject: [BOYD] Mike Boyd's Talk May 1st in Waynesville, NC (Repeat) Announcement: Boyd Mountain of Waynesville, NC, featured in a recent issue of Our State magazine (NC), will be the location of Mike Boyd's talk on Clan Boyd History and Genealogy. Mike will present his talk in the "Clinch Valley Cabin" at Boyd Mountain on Sunday afternoon, May 1st, from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. Directions and information are available at http://boydmountain.com/index-home.html. The venue will be open to us after 2:30 p.m., so please plan accordingly. **This location may appeal to Boyd researchers in a four-state area, including northeast Georgia, southeast Tennessee, northwest South Carolina and of course North Carolina. As Judith recently pointed out, "the talk will be appropriate for veteran genealogists and those just starting to explore their family history. If you have a family tree, please print it out or put it on a thumb drive and bring it to the meeting. Mike has collected over 640 individual Boyd families and is working towards connecting all of these families together." Please join us for sharing family trees and for the amazing history of Clan Boyd in beautiful, mountain surroundings of Waynesville (Haywood County), North Carolina. RSVP to me, please? This way I can let the kind folks at Boyd Mountain know how many chairs to have for us, and how many refreshments I should bring. Thank you so much! Yes I will be coming to the AGM at Woodlands in April 2012. I will wait for a few months before I start the process of working out where I will go after the AGM for a few weeks to talk to Boyd members. So hopefully I can do another "region" of the USA or Canada. We accomplished a lot of business and we had a good time. You will read more about it soon in the Dean Road. The Membership voted unanimously to hold our 2012 Annual General Meeting and Gathering of the Clan at the Sacramento Caledonian Club's 136th annual Sacramento Valley Scottish Games & Festival in April 2012. This event is held in Woodland, California, at the Yolo County Fairgrounds. The Sacramento International Airport is nearby. Motel accommodations in Woodland are reasonable. The date is yet to be confirmed. However, historically, it is the 4th or last weekend in April. It will not interfere with Easter as Easter falls on th 8th of April in 2012. Mike has expressed interest in attending the AGM again next year. We shall see how his plans develop over this coming year. My hat arrived home on Monday 16 May but its master was a little worse from hay fever. I got home to find that my phone line would not work and therefore my PC/Email. Andrew cleared one blockage but there must have been a second one as when I tried again to log on it only downloaded 422 of some 460 messages. So this morning he came over and the PC worked and so now I have some 600 plus messages to clear - some of which have come through more than once. So plenty of work over the next few days to clear this 5 week backlog. This trip to the USA was quite successful - with over new 250 families identified plus another 50 or so new families from those that came to the talks arranged for me in both USA and New Zealand. I came home with my Qantas bag full of material I collected during the 4 week trip. I think it weighed about 12 kg and I had other material in some other bags as well. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS PS I will firstly clear the non Boyd messages and hopefully by Monday or Tuesday start to answer people's Emails plus

Dear Cousins: Mike (and his hat!) have arrived safely home in Australia this morning. He's visiting the Sunshine Coast and his daughter's family. He's going to Kindergarten today with granddaughter, Katie. Mike's internet connection has been down for a couple of weeks. However, per Leighanne, it is on schedule to be repaired tomorrow. If we don't hear directly from him for a few days, that will be part of the reason. Give him a chance to settle back in at home and wade through the email that has been awaiting him over this last month away. Yours Aye, Lauren
Dear Cousins: This morning's email box had a message from Boyd Miller of New Zealand regarding Mike's talk there. Partial quotation: "The meeting went well, Mike told us the history, we talked about what we know of our families. I had corresponded with him several years ago and it was good to meet the guy. Mike had his hat with him! He was off to Christchurch on Friday I think. " Boyd is sending a report to be included in the Dean Road. I think that Mike is due home in Australia on Monday... and I remain confused if that is today there or tomorrow. lol Monday is tomorrow here, but will he be home yesterday? Yours Aye, Lauren
Dear Cousins: Mike and I are to pleased to announce we had a great turn out this past weekend. In preparation for the event, our Editor (of the Dean Road), Kevin McLachlan, established a list of over 300 Boyds in an area local to the event and created a post card to mail to them. 71% of those that signed our guest book had attended as they received the postcard. Mike gave a Boyd history lecture/talk at 2:30 each day. Unfortunately we were so enraptured we forgot to take photos! Our clan tent was packed. We had guests in attendance from a few weeks old to over 90 years. Many more Boyd families have been added to Mike's collection to add to the database. One of the visitors was the daughter of one of the Boyds of the Ballymoney area (County Antrim, Ireland) that Mike visited in 2004. She had visited our clan tent just weeks after Mike's visit to her father and we had a good laugh over the coincidence. She lives in the Sacramento area and attends the games each year. She enjoyed meeting her father's visitor. She shared that Mike's visit helped to reconnect her father's family that had moved to New York and each had been lost to the other. Mike visited many of the related clans and continued to establish communications to further our study of our family at large. Many comments were received about how much people had learned from Mike, even when they thought they knew a great deal already about their family. Mike has discovered that the Treasurer of Scotland, under Robert Boyd, Regent of Scotland was of Clan Guthrie. We had fine weather and were spared both heat and rain. However, the wind did kick up a bit late on Saturday, straining our already duct-taped tent frame. We brought yet another tent frame on Sunday, "just in case", but did not have to erect it. Our tent faired better than we thought it might. For those of you who attended the AGM in Las Vegas... the winds were considerably lighter at Woodland. For those of you who attended Loch Norman games... the winds were not so strong as to blow over a "port-a-loo" as at your event! Next year, when the event returns to its "normal" weekend -- the last full weekend in April -- I expect our turn out will be even greater. Mark your calendars for April 28 & 29, 2012 and start saving your pennies so you may travel to join us at our Annual General Meeting and Gathering of our Clan at this event. The "Woodland games" are known as "The Friendly Games." Yours Aye, Lauren & Mike
When Mike was in Lexington, we ran across the 29 volumes of ‘Colonial and Revolutionary Pedigrees’. Mike wanted me to ask the list if any had checked these out for Boyds. Then I found that there were not 29 vol., but 65 vol. There is a book called, ‘Surname Index to Sixth-Five Volumes of Colonial and Revolutionary Pedigrees’, by George Rodney Crowther, Ruth Lawrence, American Historical Company; Publisher: Washington, National Genealogical Society, 1964. Again, question is, “Has anyone checked out the contents of this book?” Judith A. Spears jkas0301@bellsouth.net

On Sunday, May 1st, Mike Boyd gave a detailed talk of the history of the Boyd family to sixteen people at Boyd Mountain in Waynesville, NC. Two Boyd researchers had driven from Marietta, Ga., and four had driven in from Knoxville, TN. Many were from the Waynesville area (Haywood Co.). Boyd Mountain Cabins were on the lovely parcel of land owned by Dan and Betsy Boyd. List members, you would all enjoy being at this place so much. It is absolutely restorative and beautiful! I will try to share photos on the Boyd! Facebook page soon. It has been featured in several magazines. http://boydmountain.com/index-home.html Michelle Treasurer, HBS NC State Historian, HBS #1266F ~ If you are interested in joining the House of Boyd Society, the application is available at http://www.clanboyd.org/joinus.shtml
Yesterday Mike Boyd presented a talk on the history of the Boyd family to 11 people in Knoxville, Tennessee. Mike was able to link one participant's family tree back to the family of George and Isabel Boyd. Next stop, Nashville.
Dear Cousins: Hello. We wanted to let you all know what a successful visit North Carolinians had with Mike Boyd, our Clan Historian, at the Triad Highland Games in Greensboro this weekend. Mike was a special guest of the Triad Highland Games, recognized at the opening ceremonies and honored by the singing of Australia's National Anthem. He met and talked with dozens of folks about the history of the Boyds and gathered even more family names and information. If Mike has not already been through your area on his 2011 tour, we highly recommended finding a way to attend. Check out http://www.clanboyd.org/ for the most up-to-date schedule. Mike Boyd of Brisbane, Australia, clan Boyd historian, will speak on Boyd family history at the East Tennessee History Center auditorium on Tuesday, May 3, at noon. The program is free. The History Center is located in downtown Knoxville at the corner of Gay Street and Clinch Avenue. The State Street parking garage is just a short walk, one block east of the building. If you have been on the Boyd genealogy e-mail list but have not made any posts yourself, now would be a great chance to get some in-person advice about your Boyd family tree, including families that married into the Boyds. If you have already made some progress on your Boyd family tree, please bring a copy of it with you to Mike's talk. Who knows, you might meet a long-lost relative there. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Kathy Manning
