    3. Marla than you for this report. I am sure that Editor Kevin will make use of it in a future Dean Road. I had hoped to have been able to speak to more Boyds from this State which had and has quite a number of Boyd families in it. Perhaps on some other trip to the USA I can visit other parts of Ohio to talk to people about their Boyd research and various Boyd families. As a result of this trip I realised that I will have to start a new Volume for Boyd families that I have found in Ohio at the local Troy Library and at Washington, Washington Co., PA. This will be Volume 36 of Clan Boyd of Scotland and will contain the usual 50 family chapters. It will be some weeks before I can sort of and make a list of those family that start in Ohio. This will go with the other 11 Volumes for States along the Atlantic Coast of the USA. 3. THE GETTYSBURG TIMES Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Publicatiaon Date: Saturday, November 12, 1938 Page: 4 BACKGROUNDS OF ADAMS COUNTY By: B. F. MacPherson No. 65 -- An Explanation In answer to several request we herewith do a bit of explaining. since beginning this series of columns on the Revolutionary soldiers buried in the county many people have asked us where we obtained the datat regarding the veterans. There are a number of sources from which such information can be obtained, the first and foremost being the Pennsylvania archives. At Washington, D. C., the comparatively few pension papers filed by soldiers of the Revolution are to be found in the pension bureau, Department of interior. In addition to the above mentioned sources the old newspaper files are also of use in the matter of death notices. As an example of this we quote the obituary published at the time of Adam Black's death. On Tuesday th 16th aged about 66 years, after a short illness, Captain Adam Black. He left a wif and children to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and an indulgent parent. Captain Black with many others marched to the defence of his country in the memorable year 1776. He was esteemed by his intimates, he was endowed with a pleasantry and cheerfulness of which disappointment or the frowns of the world could not rob him, which indicates a nobleness of mind and becoming a good man and a Christian; for philanthorpy he was excelled by few. *Adams Sentinal July 24, 1816 * Lastly we remind you that the descendants of the soldier in question sometimes have in their possession family records giving the desired data. This last source is sometimes the best. We hope the above will answer all questions adequately. * * * We continue our survey in Black's graveyard. Our first soldier of the Revolution, this week is one who lies in an unmarked grave. We believe, however, that the soldier in quest is buried in or close to the Black family plot, for he is believed to have been a brother of the wife of Robert Black. Little is known concerning Samuel Herron, so we quote from a sketch written by a descendant as follows: "Samuel herron, lived with the Blacks and was Uncle Samuel to the children. He was a solder of the Revolution, served in the "Flying Camp." The gun carried by Samuel Herron all through the war is now in the possession of his sister's descendants. He once killed two deer with one shot using the gun mentioend above and every since has been called "Old Kildeer." "In 1784, while hunting in the mountains Samuel Herron was caught in a terrible snow storm. He walked between two big trees until exhausted then sat down with "Kildeer" across his knees and froze to death. Samuel Herron was buried in Black's graveyard." Our next soldier is also buried in an umarked grave in Black's graveyard. William Boyd (second of that name) was a son of William Boyd (the first of that name) and his wife, Margaret. William Boyd (1st) was born sometime between the year 1700 - 1710 in the northern part of Ireland. His wife, Margaret, whom he married in 1726 in Ireland, was born between the years 1706 - 1710 in Ireland. William Boyd (1st) died September, 1767, in Cumberland township, York county (now Adams) and was buried in Black's graveyard. Margaret Boyd died in 1767 and was buried in the same churchyard by the side of her husband. William Boyd (1st) with his wife and family came to this country and settled in this county, 1734 - 1736. It is interesting to note that they had a family of sons and daughters when they came to York county and at least two sons were born after they came here. William Boyd (2nd) was borni n 1726 in the northern part of Ireland. He died in Cumberland township, York county, in 1785. He married sometime between the years 1744 - 1748 to Catherine McGrew (born 1724 in County Tyrone, Ireland and died October 25, 1828, in Westmoreland county at the home of her son, William Boyd (3rd). Catherine McGrew was a daughter of John and Elizabeth McGrew of County Tyrone, Ireland, and a sister of Archibald McGrew. In his will William (2nd) mentions his children as follows: (1) son, William Boyd; (2) son, John Boyd; (3) son, Robert Boyd; (4) son, Archibald Boyd; (5) son, Benjamin Boyd; (6) daughter, Rosanna Boyd inter-married with _________ Kennedy; (7) daughter, Mary Boyd inter-married with John Cavan; (8) Jeanette Boyd; (9) daughter, Elziabeth Boyd. The service of William Boyd (2nd of that name) in the war of the Revolution was as follows: At the beginning of the war he servbed as many of his neighbors, in the battalion commanded by Col. Walter Stewart in the company of Captain Matthew Scott. In August of the year 1778 William Boyd (2nd) was promoted to the rank of sergeant for a short time. After he finished this tour of duty he probably returned home and later joined Captain's Paxton's ranging company to protect the frontiers, and later, with his brother Robert Boyd, joined the new levies to protect the frontiers again. He, William Boyd, was one of the men in the regular militia companies, of his own township in the division of county battalions. This data was taken from the Pennsylvania archives, 6th series, volume 2, page 469, Cumberland township, York county, Pa., April 1778. These men were between the agees of sixteen and sixty years, who had not at that time enlisted, but were required to answer the call and were deemed fit to serve if necessary. Guess I'm reading old newspapers today. Will share as I find. Mindy

    3. Rebecca I think that you will need to look at what Americans used in 1850 for Ireland, Scotland, England, etc not what we may call these Countries today. I THINK THAT IF THEY LEFT from Belfast you could be 99% sure that both William and Jane came from Ireland and not from Scotland. Glasgow, was the second most commercial City in the UK and so would have had quite a lot of shipping of its own going to North America for cotton, tabbacco, etc. They may have come from Wigtonshire or one of the other SW Scottish Counties, as Belfast would have been closer than Glasgow and therefor cheaper to get an ship So go through all the US sources that you can think of, to see what place of birth they may have for both of them. Take a look to <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_britain> for more information. Apparently it is stated that Great Britain is the Island on which Scotland, Cornwall, Wales and England are located. The Isle of Alba. Census work should provide more clues before you are jumping off in *any* country looking for William Boyd.... Jane is just as common a name. Kind of like a search for John Smith or Jane Doe! However, I suspect you will find "Scotland" as the response for Jane's place of birth on the census. 3. Chris and other Boyd Listers, In regards to Chris's email below, here is what I have compiled for the 1820 and 1830 census records for Jefferson Co., OH. The families that could be Nancy's are starred in green. In the 1820 census records, I am honing in more towards the Island Creek Twp. Boyds (David and William), since I found a baptism for a Nancy Boyd in the records of the Island Creek Presbyterian Church. According the ancestry.com, the Boyds listed in the 1820 and 1830 census records for Jefferson Co., OH are: 1820 - Stubenville Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - Adam Boyd There are no females 0-10. *1820 - Stubenville Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - James Boyd There are two females in Nancy's age category (0-10). Nancy would have been around 8 years old. *1820 - Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - David Boyd There are four females in Nancy's age category (0-10). Nancy would have been around 8 years old. *1820 - Island Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - William Boyd There are three females in Nancy's age category (0-10). Nancy would have been around 8 years old. *1830 - Stubenville Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - James Boyd – There is one female in Nancy's age group. Nancy would have been around 18 years old. (There is a James Boyd listed in “Early Residences of Jefferson Co. Deed Entries 1788-1812. ”This James Boyd came from Chester Co., PA on 11 Mar 1809.) 1830 - Clinton Twp., Jefferson Co., OH. - John Boyd – No family only John – 70-80 years of age (A John Boyd is listed in “Early Residences of Jefferson Co. Deed Entries 1788-1812.” This John is listed as coming from Chester Co., PA on 11 Mar 1809.) *1830 - Knox Twp., Jefferson Co., OH - David Boyd – there are three females in Nancy's age group. Nancy would have been around 18 years old. I CAN'T FIND A WILLIAM BOYD IN THE 1830 JEFFERSON CO., OH CENSUS That's all for now. 3. Rebecca, Have you ordered the civil war records for the two William J Boyds? Their ages might rule one or the other out as your man. Have you checked for pension records for them? I understand Union records were much more extensive than confederate but I have yet to actually see one since I haven't found a Union ancestor yet. Doubt that parents would be listed but- hey you never know for certain. Do you have a death record for him. A pension record for his wife sometimes gives a death date if she outlived him and filed herself in his name. You might want to post what you know about him (or that story says with his regiment) on this civil war site http://history-sites.net/cgi-bin/bbs53x/ohcwmb/webbbs_config.pl?index The experts there may or may not know more about your ancestor or ways to better narrow him down. 3. I'm sorry I left out Nancy's year of birth. It was 1812. I also need to add that some census records say she was born in PA and others say OH. I have had a request from someone on the list, to show which Boyd families in the 1820 and 1830 Jefferson Co., OH census records have a female that would have been Nancy's age. I am currently working on compiling all of that info together. It is taking me sometime, because I have it on separate papers . I will post it hopefully tomorrow. Looking at these records again is giving me some ideas. I appreciate everyone's input and challenges. 3. Mike and all, That is all I know and I would not swear to the accuracy of this. Like Cal I heard about it on the history channel and did about an hour's research. The documents at the U. of Indiana are a primary source. He mentions his 7 children. There is a story that he was supposed to meet some of his family at Brownsville Texas to go the Mexico but this may have been Booth posing as James. At any rate no one showed up. It is a fact that James Boyd's name became mixed up in the assassination. It is also a fact that James suggested he spy for the North. The rest starts being rumor it would seem. There are many references online and the suggestion is that James died in place of Booth and that Booth made a clean get away. I do not buy into conspiracy theories so I do not subscribe to the stories. It does not look like the evidence will ever be in unless someone is able to do DNA on Booth. I may do some more research at some future date and if so I will post it. For now it is just an interesting story and since so many Boyds passed through Kentucky and Tennessee, including by ancestors, James is probably in one of our trees. There are artifacts from Booth at Walter Reed Hosp. in D.C.that makes this possible. viewed on channel 269 (The History Channel) DirecTV Awrabest, Cal

    3. Saw the same thing and did a little research. James W Boyd was born 1822 at Hopkinsville Kentucky. Later lived in Jackson Tennessee. Married Caroline Malone in 1845 and had 7 children. Was a Confederate officer who was captured and later paroled to care for his children after his wife died. Saw a document on file at the University on Indiana that was a letter he wrote to Sec. of War Stanton. He proposed to Stanton that for monetary consideration he would spy on Confederate operations in western Tennessee where, he claimed, he knew everything. All this is easily googled and interesting from a history standpoint. I had not realized how much confusion there was immediately after Lincoln's assassination and how unstable the government was. Makes interesting research. There are artifacts from Booth at Walter Reed Hosp. in D.C.that makes this possible. viewed on channel 269 (The History Channel) DirecTV Awrabest, Cal ______________________________________ House of Boyd Society's (HBS) Annual General Meeting (AGM) & Gathering of the Clan 2012 will be held in Woodland,CA, USA in conjunction with the Sacramento Caledonian Club's 136th annual Sacramento Valley Scottish Games & Festival in April 2012 (unofficial date April 28th and 29th -- to be confirmed by the venue).
