In Two Parts Chicago, Ill: A. Warner & Co., Publishers 1889 Part II Page: 461 JOHN GILL McDOWELL, farmer, postoffice, New Texas, was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in August 1828, a son of John and Jane (Gill) McDowell, a former of whom, a native of Mifflin township, was a school teacher, and taught for some years in Pittsburgh; then removed to Versailles township near McKeesport, where he died in 1842, aged sixty-six years. Our subject's great-grandfather came from Ireland and settled in Mifflin township, where he owned a large plantaqtion and many slaves; his son Archibald, was a man of leisure, and with his horse and colored servants spent his time in hunting. Our subject's maternal grandfather, John Gill, came from Ireland. John G. McDowell attended school in Pittsburgh, and also in Patton and Versailes township. At the age of twenty-one he began teaching in Patton township, and so continued four years. He then took life easy for a few years, living on the income of his father's estate, but his marriage, in 1862, with Catherine Boyd, a sister of Eli Boyd of Turtle Creek, changed the course of his life, she being the main factor of his success in business. Mrs. McDowell was born in Westmoreland county, January 15, 1835, a daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Wilson) Boyd, who were born in Westmoreland county, November 9, 1795, and near Elizabeth, Allegheny county, August 12, 1804, and died here April 6, 1869, and May 17, 1859, respectively. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McDowell, three of whom are living: Edward Howard of Turtle Creek; George Wilson and Sarah Jane, at home. The deceased are Caroline, who died aged eight years; Maggie, when aged three, and Anna when aged eight. After marraige Mr. McDowell bought a small place in Patton township, but three years later he sold it and bought his present farm, where he has lived twenty-two years. He and family are members of the Unity U. P. Church; he was a democrate, but is now a prohibitionist. Mrs. McDowell's sister, Elizabeth, married Rev. James Kelzo, for twenty-one years pastor of Unity Church. Mike the image was bad on this one. I scaned this at the Elizabeth Historical society. Went back and transcribed it. Mindy

Dave, I am so sorry for your loss and the terrible toll ALS took on your wife. She must have been a wonderful person and a gifted musician, and I know she will be greatly missed by many. You have my deepest sympathy. I am a nurse, so I understand what she went through; and I hope you find peace knowing that she is whole and healthy with Jesus. Story In Memoriam: Cassie D. Boyd 1937 - 2010 One afternoon in late November 2009 I came home to find my wife on her knees on the second of three steps from our garage into the house. A bag of groceries was on the floor. She did not tell me how long she had been there, only that she could not climb the last steps into the house. We attributed the problem to fatigue and age; we were in our mid-seventies. On the second Sunday in January 2010, Cassie was unable to get from the organ console in church to the choir room to warm up the choir. She collapsed into a chair in the room beside the sanctuary to rest. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a double major: BFA in Organ and BFA in Music Education. Until that day she had played difficult organ pieces in church using both her foot pedals and multiple manuals on the organ. She never played in church again. In late January she was diagnosed with A.L.S. after an orthopedic work-up showed no mechanical cause for her lower limb weakness. The diagnosis was confirmed at the A.L.S. Center in Charlotte North Carolina in mid-February. By Easter she was unable to support her weight and was confined to an electric wheel chair, and transferred from bed to chair to commode using a Hoyer hydraulic lift. The disease quickly progressed and in a few weeks she had difficulty holding her body upright while in the wheel chair. I used small pillows as wedges to try to keep her comfortable. She was unable to roll over in bed and would wake me several times a night asking me to roll her over to get comfortable. On June 18, 2010, our fiftieth wedding anniversary, she ran her wheel chair to the piano and was able to play only the melody line of "Anniversary Waltz" through to the end. Four days later on June 22 she was at last given rest. That morning her disease had progressed so far that I had to support her hand as she sipped her morning coffee. My employer CVS is conducting a campaign for the ALS Therapy Alliance during this month. If you shop at CVS and are asked OR are not asked to contribute, I ask you to consider this story and please give a dollar for a worthy cause. I have experienced first-hand the horrific debilitation of this awful disease and have shared this story in the hope that you will whole heartedly join the efforts of CVS and the ALS Therapy Alliance. Do any list members know of the family of:- Thomas Boyd (1734 - 1719) - he was most likely born in Leeds area of England or the Midlands of England - and his wife Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of Governor of Virginia. The given children are:- James Boyd, b 1658 Richard Boyd, b 1660 Thomas Boyd, b 1662 John Boyd, 1670 William Boyd, 1672 Benjamin Boyd, b 1674 I WOULD ASSUME form the gap between Thomas and John Boyd that other children were born to this couple - perhaps some girls or children whom died at birth. I would estimate that Thomas, the father, was married to Elizabeth about 1657. However, the source does not say if this was in England or America. >From the dates given it would appear that the person doing this tree came from the USA. Can some volunteer to research Governor Bennett's family of Virginia please to see if we can get some details from the spouse family on this Boyd family Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
