    1. [BOYD] July 1, 2011 Canada Day
    2. Lauren Boyd McLachlan
    3. Dear Cousins: Today is Canada Day! per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_Day Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada), formerly Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), is the national day of Canada, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three British colonies into a single country, called Canada, within the British Empire.Originally called Dominion Day, the name was changed in 1982, the year that Canada gained full independence from the United Kingdom. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada as well as internationally. It is my hope that our Canadian Cousins will chime in with their tales of participation in the founding of Canada and how it is celebrated, memorialized and commemorated by their families. 1. [BOYD] Independence Day in the United States of America celebrated this Monday, July 4, 2011
    2. Lauren Boyd McLachlan
    3. Dear Cousins: This weekend most people in the USA will be extending celebration of the Founding of our Nation and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Although it took more than one day to write, accept and sign the document, the traditional date assigned to the event is the 4th of July and referred to as "Independence Day." (read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence) Thomas Jefferson is credited with being the Author of this venerable document.  ( read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson) Jefferson was of Scottish descent. On page 39-41 of the book "The Mark of the Scots" (ISBN0-8065-2060-4) there is a comparison between the Declaration of Arbroath (April 6, 1320), the National Covenant (Edinburgh 1638) and The United States of America Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776). The comparison shows paragraph by paragraph how the documents express the same ideas and sentiments. I am opening this list again this weekend for all of you to share your memories and stories about your family and how they memorialize(d), celebrated, participated in the American Independence Day. If you have a Revolutionary War ancestor, please share their story -- Boyd or not! Recipes are also welcome for sharing with our cousins. Also feel free to send a message that tells of who (a Boyd, any where in time or place) you wish you could share your Independence Day picnic/bbq with and why. Yours Aye, Lauren whose mother's childhood nick-name was "Liberty Independence McNutt"

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: watsonma13 Surnames: Boyd Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.boyd/6876/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for the ancestry of my ggreat grandfather Nathaniel William Boyd, born in 1861 in Alabama. I have located two census records for 1870 from Alabama that could be a match, but there is a huge conflict. One of the census records lists Nelson 40, Anderson 20, Nelson 17, Cornelia 12, and Nathan 8 in Mobile Ward 8 and they are white. The other census (SAME YEAR), lists nelson (49), Anderson 19, Nelson 15, Cornelia 12, and Nathan 7 also in Mobile Ward 8. The age differences are understandable as the same year's census could have been done a year apart, however, the second census lists the family as black. I don't care which way this goes, I'm just trying to figure out which census is correct so I know if I am barking up the right tree or not. I can't find any other records for a Nathan Boyd (1861 - Alabama), so if anyone has further information, I would really appreciate any leads or answers. Thanks! 1. [BOYD] ADMIN NOTE--> Gateway posts, List Address, etc.
    2. Lauren Boyd McLachlan
    3. Hi Cousins: Might be a good idea to print this one and put it in that handy notebook next to your computer. Or save it electronically in your "how to" file on your computer. At any rate... keep it handy so you can refer to it until you are accustomed to the new changes.... and in the event you forget sometime down the road! It's been a couple or more weeks now since I opened the gateway between Rootsweb/Ancestry.com's Boyd message board and the Boyd list. AND since I removed the requirement to use "reply all" in order to have your post send to the list and not only to the original author. I am experiencing that there is some confusion out there. Let me see if I can clear a couple of things up. THE LIST ADDRESS: Boyd@rootsweb.com remains the address to send your original posts to the Boyd list. That has not changed. It is no longer necessary to "reply to all" in order to have your post send to the list and not only to the original author. If you use "reply to all" as there may be non-subscribers included in the original cc list, please REMOVE the address <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com>. GATEWAY posts: The address <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> is an Internal Rootsweb Address. It is NOT a new address to send mail to the Boyd list. It is NOT an address to send mail to the author of a Boyd message board post that has "gatewayed" to the Boyd list. Messages sent or replied to <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> go to a pending file and are discarded by the Message Board Coordinator. In other words, they go to the trash, sight unseen. To reply to the author of a post that comes from the address <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> (a "gatewayed post"/ Boyd Message Board post) you simply click on the URL (link) that is in the gatewayed post. It will take you to the message board at Rootsweb/Ancestry.com and you can reply there. Your reply will gateway to the list automatically. If you forget --- there is a short note at the bottom of every gatewayed post that tells you HOW TO REPLY to a gatewayed post. The gateway works in one direction ONLY. Messages from the board are emailed to the list. Messages from the list are NOT posted to the Board. Many of you have been subscribed to other lists that have functioned this way for YEARS. So, you are old hands at the process. Please be patient as the others on this list catch up with the new changes. Yours Aye, Lauren Boyd List Admin

The message came through from the Gateway from the message board. gc-gateway is an internal Rootsweb/Ancestry.com address it should not be included in replies as they go to the "bit bucket", not to a specific human. 1. [BOYD] Culbertson and Culberson of Lurgan Twp, Cumberland Co., PA, previously Ballygan, Co Antrim and Scotland.
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. If any member of this list is also on the Culbertson and/or Culberson Net list I would be grateful if you post this message to that list please. During my trip to the USA in April and May this year I found these two books on the Culbertson and Culberson families at the Troy, Ohio:- A) Genealogy of the Culbertson and Culberson Families, Revised Edition, Lewis R. Culbertson, 1923 B) Four Families - Cory, Culbertson, Smith, Gahagan, by Hannah M Gahagan, (before 1966). >From the book The Descendants of the Robert Boyd and the Charles Boyd Families of Chester County, South Carolina, by Max Perry, 1987, it tells us that Captain Robert Boyd of Cumberland Valley, PA came to the USA in about 1737. He was born in Scotland (his son John is the only one of the 8 children whom had a place of birth - Irvine in about 1725 - so Mike Boyd THINKS that this Robert Boyd [who is different to the shipmaster Robert Boyd] also came from this part of Scotland where there were plenty of Boyd families) to North Ireland and then to Province of Pennsylvania. Max Perry list this Robert Boyd's first child as:- "I. Margaret Boyd, m Capt Alexander Culbertson, b 1721, Ireland, d. killed 21 June 1776, Revolutionary War, Canada, Isle Aux Neix. A. Samuel Culbertson, b 1745 B. Robert Culbertson C. Alexander Culbertson D. John Culbertson E. Joseph Culbertson, b 1753, Franklin Co., Penn F. James Culbertson" And Max does not provide any more data on this family. >From Lewis R. Culbertson's book, page 135, it says:- "(E) Capt. Alexander Culbertson, of Lurgan Tp. Cumberland Co., PA, emigrated to America between 1730-35, from Ballymoney, Co., Antrim, Ireland ("Irish Row"). He settled about six miles from the town of Chambersburg, PA - his cousin, Joseph, came over in 1743 - and his farm and that of his two brothers and cousin together with the farms of their children, were called "Culbertson Row". In 1755 Alexander Culbertson was commissioned Captain in Col. Burd's Regt. of PA Provincial Troops in the French and Indian War. (see PA Arch. N. Ser. Vol. 11, p. 519). In April 1756, he was a captain in Lieut. Col. Armstrong's Regt. (Second) of PA. Prov. Troops and was killed near McCord's Fort, April 2, 1756." While on page 136, it says:- "(E) Capt. Alexander (Irish) married Margaret (there is a record which gives her name Mary Duncan, b Mar. 15., 1725, in Lancaster Co., PA. d. Aug. 3. 1794, married Nov. 4 1740 in Lancaster Co., PA.) this is an error as his wife's first name was Margaret - whether Margaret Duncan I could not state. Alexander's administrator's - Joseph Culbertson and Margaret Stuart were appointed in March 1757. Joseph was appointed gd'n for Samuel and Alex. minors and James Breckenridge gd'n for Robert in 1758. In May, 1763, James, son of Alex. dec'd, being 14 years of age, chose N. Wilson as guardian. Chas. Stuart was appointed guardian of John and Joseph being under 14 years of age. Margaret, widow, had remarried by or before March 1757, Capt. Alexander's widow remarried before 1758 to John Stuart as shown by the following Release of Dower, 'John Stuart and Margaret his wife, being the relict of Alexander Culbertson, dec'd, late of Letterkenny Tp., Cumberland Co., PA, who said John Stuart has intermarried, in consideration of 60 pound paid by Alex's eldest son, Samuel, do hereby release all claim on the estate of Alexander Culbertson. Made 1765, Recorded 1795,' Capt Alex. had two other warrants one of which was in Cumberland Valley Tp. Bedford Co., PA" While on page 137 it lists these children for Capt Alexander Culbertson:- "Issue: I. Samuel (Col.) b. Dec 21 1741; d Feb 4, 1817, II Robert (Col) b. ---, 174-; d -----. III Elizabeth (Mrs Col Chas Cessna), b Jan 31, 1747; d. ----- IV James b. 1748-9; d 1805. Capt ("Baron James"), V Alexander, b 1750; d Dec 13, 1822. Tanner, VI John b 1753; d. Nov 1844. Lieut. VII Joseph, b 1755-6; d 1776 (Killed, Three Rivers, Canada March 1776), Ensign So are these two Alexander Culbertson families the same? They have the same names for the six sons. But the date of death for Capt Alexander Culbertson differs - with 1776 in Max Perry's book and 1756 in Lewis R. Culbertson's book. This migration path back from before the Cumberland Valley, PA in 1735 was from Ballygan townland, in the Parish of Ballymoney, County Antrim Ireland. Ballygan townland is about 4 1/2 kms west of Ballymoney. It is just east of Macfin where Boyd families came from and just south of Ballywindelland where some other Boyd families lived. I know that there Culbertson families in and around Kilmarnock and Fenwick in Ayrshire but I have no knowledge if those from Ballygan came from Ayrshire or not in Scotland. At this time I can't say if the family of Captain Robert Boyd, whom we only know came to Cumberland Valley in about 1737 from North Ireland, and that his son John was said to have been born in Irvine Ayrshire in 1725, knew the Culbertson family in Ireland before coming to Cumberland Valley. If you have any information on this Culbertson family, I would like to hear from you please, so I can confirm that Captain Alexander Culbertson's wife was Margaret Boyd, daughter of Captain Robert Boyd. Thank you ? Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society

Boyd's children was Alice Boyd, born in 1883, married a William Hacker after January 12, 1920, and died in 1957. I don't have any children listed (I supposed my family never checked it out because she wasn't a direct ancestor). So, according to this, Captain Charles Boyd himself came over from Ireland? Or did I miss some generation(s) somewhere? I know that in the 1850 census, his birthplace is listed as New Jersey. After John "Tip" Boyd took off for California, Charles U. Boyd would have been the oldest, so I can see why he would have taken the family stuff (unless it was against what his parents' wills said). It might be interesting to check out more about Alice and see if there's some more stuff floating around out there. Would you give me names of sources for your information (or scans of stuff you may have...such as that Bible notation)? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His full name was George Washington Boyd and he married Laura Leonard. George was the son of William Boyd and Hannah (nee Fulks but I also have heard her name as Hannah J Emson). I have done a lot of digging over the years and have found out that yes, the Boyd's did come over from Ireland, but they only ended up in Ireland after being run out of Scotland. They were given the lands of Kilmarnock from no other than Robert the Bruce, after they helped him win the Battle of Bannockburn. I lived in Scotland for many years and have visited Dean Castle which belonged to the Boyd's before they were run out of Scotland. Charles, the son of Lord Boyd was taken in and hidden by the Hall family and he went to college in Belfast. One of Hall's sons came to America and Boyd came with him even bringing an oil painting of his royal parents. Charles and Hall bought up great tracks of land in both New Jersey and Virginia. He married Susan Carpenter who! was the daughter of a Kentucky plantaion owner. I have herd rumours that one of their sons married a "Todd" girl...never made the connection to Abe Lincoln's "Todd" until you mentioned this! Their first-born was John Leland (called Tipp by friends and family). John left home after his father was killed to follow the gold rush. The next paragraph is from my great grandfathers notes: " They had another boy, Charles, and he took most of the family things from the old home, including the oil painting of our Scots Royal Boyds. The last I knew of them, they were in the home of Alice Boyd (Charles daughter?)Alice went on a trip and rented the home to two men who piled coal on the painting and ruined it." I have one of my great grandfather's bibles and in it I found a note that said, " Charles Boyd was wrongfully imprisoned in NewCastle." ! I hope some of this helps! Boyd, son of Captain Charles Boyd and Susan Carpenter. Charles U. had a daughter, variously named Susan Anna Belle Boyd, Hannah Boyd, Anna Boyd, or just Belle Boyd (have it 3 different ways on her marriage license, even!) She married Thomas Logan Hare, and one of their daughters was Lillie May Hare. Lillie married (first marriage) Clarence Dettweiler. My dad, Billie Dettweiler, was their first child. I've been trying to verify family stories about Captain Charles Boyd (such as having served in the Mexican War and details surrounding his death/murder), but haven't had much luck. An account of the latter that differs in a few details from what we have was given by George W.T. Boyd, son of Theodore L. "Dode" Boyd, son of William Thomas Gideon Boyd.... Also, anything verifying Captain Charles Boyd's birth, parents, etc., or anything farther back, would be helpful, if you have it. Unfortunately, I don't know if I'll have anything you may need...but if you can think of anything, I'll be glad to share what I can. He married Susan Carpenter in Shelby County, Kentucky in 1833, and moved to Cass County, Illinois before 1840. We had that his father's name was William (which CiareyForbes agrees with) and we have that William was born in New Jersey, but no dates, no wife, or other children etc. info. Our family history says that William's father was from Ireland, but I don't have any info on that, either. I am interested your William Boyd who married Nancy Reed/Read...curious whether they also had a son named Benjamin Reed Boyd (who I've been looking for to place a certain aunt that my great-grandmother was supposed to be named after). 1. [BOYD] From the first Lord Robert Boyd's 6th son to the name BOYDSTUN.
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. As you of you may recall my previous reference to Adam Boyd, the youngest son of first Lord Robert Boyd and his family. The American researcher who supplied this Chart of 13 generations said he was born in 1460 and married for his second wife Joan Cuthbert. It does not say who his first wife was or how many children he may have had with this first wife. Or where they may have been born. Nor does it tell us when this Adam Boyd married Joan. From the birth of their first child - Cuthbert Boyd in 1494 - I would assume it was about 1493. The chart also said that he "moved to Leeds, England, his home Kirk Bielston". But did not say where he moved from. We know that his father settled at Alnwick after he fled Scotland in 1469 and is THOUGHT to have died in about 1482, when his son Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran, own son James Boyd was made Second Lord Boyd and was restored to the property by two charters, (Boyd Papers, Ayr Arch. Coll., iii. 139.) dated 14 October 1482, to his mother in liferent and to himself in fee, of the lands of Kilmarnock and others in Ayrshire; Teylyng and Brechty in Forfarshire; Caverstoun in Roxburghshire; Naristoun in Lanarkshire and Polgavy in Perthshire, and had instrument of sasine on these 'James, Lord Boyd,' in the barony of Kilmarnock, 22 October following, and in the lands of Monfod, Kilbryd, Flat, Ravisdalemure, Dalry, 25 October, and in those of Ormscleuch, Charlton, Bollynschaw, Dririg, etc., 26 October. (Boyd Papers, iii. 139, 141, 142.) Previous writers say he was not restored as Lord Boyd, but it seems plain from this that they are wrong, and that his grandfather, having died between Easter 1480-81 and 14 October 1482, he was allowed by the King, his uncle, to take the title. He is named James, Lord Boid, as a witness to a charter January 1483-84. (Reg. Mag. Sig., i 330, No. 1573.) So the First Lord Boyd flight in 1469 from Scotland, would appear to be one migration to England by members of Clan Boyd. However, at this time, we can't say if it was the first migration or not. From the International Genealogical Index we do know that there are many Boyds in various Counties in England in the 1600's but not where these Boyd came from. In the 7th Generation of this Chart we have Thomas Boyd (1634-1719), who was the fourth son listed to the parents John Boyd and Lidia Eliott. This Thomas married Elizabeth Bennett, daughter of Governor of Virginia. However, there is no indication if this Thomas came to Virginia or remained in England. If Elizabeth Bennett was living in Virginia, with her father, it may mean that Thomas came to America in the mid to later 1600's. The Chart lists 6 children for Thomas and Elizabeth - James (b1658); Richard (b 1660); Thomas (b 1662); John (b 1670); William (b 1672); and Benjamin (b 1674). Although the gap between Thomas and John would SUGGEST that other children were born to this couple - perhaps girls or children that died in child birth. The Chart says that William married Mary Thornton, but does not give any date. It said that she was born in 1676 and it gives their first child being born in 1693, so I expect they married about 1693. However, there is no indication where this marriage took place - America or England. It lists three children - Thomas Boyd (1693-1766); John Boyd (b 1695); and James Boyd (b 1697). The son, Thomas Boyd, is listed as having married Mahulda Box - but no date or place of marriage. The Chart lists eight children to this couple and lists the name BOYLESTON. They are Thomas Boylston (1714-1810); David Boyleston (1716-1811); John Boylston; George Boylston; Presley Thornton Boylston (b 1710); William Bennett Boylston (b 1732); Benjamin Boylston (b 1735) and Melinda Boylston. Thomas Boyd and "Mahulda" Box are mentioned in three publications:- i) The Boydstun Family, by Gustine Courson Weaver, 1927; ii) The Boydstun-Boydston Family, Gladys Boydstun Domonoake, 1971; and iii) The Ancestors of John Hall Boydstun and his Descendants, Q. B. Boydstun, 1972. In the second book above, they use the names Boydstun-Boyleston-Boydston. So something happened in the early 1700's for this family to change from BOYD to BOYLSTON. One source said that this family went to Boston, MASS. while the other book said that they began in Talbot County, Maryland. That will have to be another article. This article is to let members know that the Boyds of Northumberland in the 1469, later moved to Leeds area of Yorkshire (and most likely to other areas in the Midlands of England) and some in the late 1600's or early 1700's moved to the USA. So we need to encourage people with the name of Boydstun, Boydston, or Boyleston to join the Boyd@rootsweb.com net list and post their known family and to do their DNA test to see where they may find a link in Clan Boyd.
