The e-mail I received from Ancestry said nothing about free, only the SAR applications being available for the 4th of July weekend. If you have an account you can look and attach the record to your Ancestry tree but you cannot print it or download it to your computer. I tried. Many of the applications reference DAR member applications. DAR has a free site for searches at http://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search/?Tab_ID=1&Tab_ID_Sub=1&Ac tion=Search You used to have to fill out a written request for information. Not all generations are shown but you can purchase a PDF copy of the application on the site for a nominal fee. Steven Do you know where in Ohio that Robert K Boyd was born? There are a number of Boyd families in Shelby Co., Indiana - so hopefully some of these will reply to you. Are you a member of the Shelby Co, Indiana rootsweb.com net site? This is a additional list of Boyds that were not on the 1990 DAR Patriot Index that I have found that were said to have also been involved in the War of Independence. I call this a B List. I have only gone to chapter 2/136 in this project and need to get time to go through up to Volume 6 with chapter 6/300 to see what other names can be added to this B List. LIST B BOYD'S NOT RECORDED IN DAR INDEX BUT WHO SEVERED IN WAR [WILL NEED TO SORT INTO ALPHABETICAL LISTING WHEN INITIAL LIST COMPLETED. THEN CAN DO STATE LISTING] B1. Capt. Adam Boyd, ch 4/208, R1/S1/T1, PA or SC? B2. John Boyd, ch 4/208, R1/S1/T2, PA or SC? B3. Adam Boyd, ch 4/208, S7, Chaplain 5th NC Regiment B4. Rev. John Boyd, Ch 4/209, T7/U2, SC B5. Robert Boyd, Ch 4/209, T7/U1, SC B6. 2/130 BOYD OF NY in Army during 1775-81* The following is not the normal family grouping that has occurred in the normal family Chapters. In W. P. Boyd's book he has provided from the old muster roll of soldiers from the Province or State of New York in the Archives, Albany, NY. They took active part in the Revolutionary war (I assume this was the war of 1776-1783?) and the regiments they were members of. Perhaps in time each of these men's families can be made into a family chapter. [This would suggest that perhaps other States that formed the United States in this period might have similar records which would be of value to Clan researchers.] From his notes it would appear that Ebenezer Boyd, is part of Chapter 2/140 Boyd of Kent, NY. (i) Ebenezer Boyd, captain in the 3rd Regiment; (ii) George Boyd, private in the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th Regiments; (iii) Isaac Boyd, private in 7th Regiment; (iv) James Boyd, 2nd Ulster county Regiment and also artillery; (v) John Boyd, sergeant in General Putnam Scoharie county Regiment; L30 (vi) John Boyd, captain in the 5th Regiment; (vii) John Boyd, Charlotte county Militia, also the 6th Regiment and 7th Albany Militia; (viii) Jonah Boyd, private of 6th Regiment; (ix) Jonathan Boyd, Fonday's Party; (x) Jonathan Boyd, the 1st Regiment; (xi) Nathaniel Boyd, 2nd and Levies Regiments; (xii) Peley Boyd, in the Levies Regiment; 2/139 Roberts (xiii) & (xiv) (xiii) Robert Boyd, in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Regiments and Charlotte Militia; (xiv) Robert Boyd, Jr., in the 2nd Regiment; L51? (xv) Samuel Boyd, in the 2nd, 5th and 6th Regiments; L58? (xvi) Thomas Boyd, in the Charlotte county Militia; ? (xvii) William Boyd, in the Charlotte county Militia; L52? (xviii) Samuel Boyd, in the 5th and 6th Regiments >From the notes beneath this list is a reference to a play which was introduced in New York in the 1890's in which one of the characters was Captain Ebenezer Boyd of Kent, New York (see Chapter 2/140) in the play, Major Andre, by Clyde Fitch. My Revolutionary War relative is Zenas Macumber: My paternal grandfather was Samuel Kyle Boyd, who married Zillah Adelaide Harrison in 1894 in Colorado. Zillah's mother was Frances Macumber, whose grandfather was Zenas Macumber. Zenas was among a group that joined the Plymouth militia under the command of Col. Theophilus Cotton of Plymouth and went to Marshfild Mass in April 1775. Zenas is lilsted in one of the two companies that responded in April and in May, 1775, he was among those who enlisted for eight month's service. Eventually, he was a member of Washington's body guards and served mostly in Virginia. He was taken for dead by the British and then rescued and hospitalized when found to be alive. (He had 17 bayonet wounds.) He ended up in Delta, PA, and was a physician there for many years. There is a monument in the cemetery in honor of him and his efforts for independence. He died in Delta, York County, PA in 1831. Although it took more than one day to write, accept and sign the document, the traditional date assigned to the event is the 4th of July and referred to as "Independence Day." (read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence) Thomas Jefferson is credited with being the Author of this venerable document. ( read more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson) Jefferson was of Scottish descent. On page 39-41 of the book "The Mark of the Scots" (ISBN0-8065-2060-4) there is a comparison between the Declaration of Arbroath (April 6, 1320), the National Covenant (Edinburgh 1638) and The United States of America Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776). The comparison shows paragraph by paragraph how the documents express the same ideas and sentiments. I am opening this list again this weekend for all of you to share your memories and stories about your family and how they memorialize(d), celebrated, participated in the American Independence Day. If you have a Revolutionary War ancestor, please share their story -- Boyd or not! Recipes are also welcome for sharing with our cousins. Also feel free to send a message that tells of who (a Boyd, any where in time or place) you wish you could share your Independence Day picnic/bbq with and why. Sounds like a great find! And good advice re SAR/DAR. Thanks for passing it along. Aye, Lauren
>From the Historical Committee (and I am sure Editor Kevin of Dean Road), we would like to hear from all those list members from Canada who have been sitting quietly on this list. It pays to advertise, to let others know what you are looking for. Some of you will still be celebrating your National day as I write. So on Saturday or Sunday take a few minutes to tell the list who you are. Can you tell the list where your family came from and when to Canada? When did Boyds first come to Canada? Or to your Province (I know from the Ayrshire list that quite a number of Ayrshire miners went from Ayrshire to BC in the early to mid 1800's) Does (or did) your have a family reunion for Canada Day? Or any other Boyd information that you think the list might enjoy. >From last years trip to Scotland/Ireland/USA and this years to the USA, I now have some 800 additional Boyd family Chapters to write up to add to the 630 family chapters that I have already collected over the last 25 years. Thank you. Prince William, through his mother is an descendant of the 6th Lord Robert Boyd's daughter Marion Boyd who married James Hamiltion, Earl of Abercorn. So if you get an chance in either Canada or hte USA to go out to gret them, so hallo to kinsmen. And if you do meet them or see one of their events, I am sure that Editor Keven (editor@clanboyd.org) will be quite please to get a "small" article from you about it. Best available evidence (not proof) indicates that Samuel Boyd is my 4th great grand uncle. While checking the Sons of The American Revolution application forms available on Ancestry.com this weekend, I also found a complete, 60 page, pension application file for Samuel and Isabella. Treasure trove for weekend reading. Note that the SAR files do have different information from the DAR applications, so they are worth researching. John & Kathleen
