"The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families of America, A Genealogical Encyclopedia of the United States", Frederick A. Virkus, Vol. I, 1925 When Judy Spears of Pikeville, KY and I visited the Lexington, Kentucky, KY, Library in April 2011, we found the above publication. As this in titled "The Abridged Compendium", my mind is asking me if there is a "complete" Compendium published. So does anyone on this list know if such a publication was made. Or have they made this "Abridged" version from Individual family publications or some other source? Volume 1, has an Alphabetical Index, so if you are doing a reverse pyramid of all your ancestors, this maybe a useful source to consult for those non-Boyd fmailies. In our rush, I did not make a note as to what other Volumes were published in this series. Thank you ? Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
There's a wikipedia entry for it that describes how the 7 vols were proofed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Compendium_of_American_Genealogy Anything this vast in scope is bound to contain errors. DAR is usually quite prickly when it comes to accuracy and the fact that they store a copy suggests that its usefulness might outweigh other considerations. If you google, click on the "more" and then click on "books" on the drop-down menu and then you can go to the "find a library" and input your zip code and find out if any of these books are in a library near you. I found there are several copies in California libraries, one in Brooklyn, NY and one particular edition, I think the 1968, is only found in Sweden. Maybe someone on the list may live near one of these libraries and can see if any Boyds got listed. (I gave the directions just in case someone has not yet found his/her way to google books. Maybe there's another way to get there for all I know....I'm not real "computer literate"!) Charlene Boyd Kemp In a message dated 7/5/2011 3:26:44 A.M. Virkus' work is good for clues but as to documenting the information is lacking. I would be careful using Virkus' work as a source. Martha, Thank you for your information. I had found the following information from "Harold Oliver Director America's First Families copyright© 2000, 2001, 2002. 2003 Sons & Daughters of America's First Families All Rights Reserved.” It stated the following: “Societies will not honor as a source itself, most Family Histories, World Family Tree CDs or IGI generated listings from the LDS files since many come from unproven sources, books that generate listings such as the wonderful Peter Wilson Coldham books, Virkus and other list compilers. In those cases use the sources that each of these people indicated within each of the listings. There are some remarkable works out there. Use them correctly.” Since it had stated the word “wonderful” before Peter Wilson Coldham, I misunderstood and thought it meant all those listed past it were reliable sources. When I Googled Virkus, I found quite a few articles about his work. Several of them went in depth concerning the inaccuracy. Hi Mike: Searching google.com for "Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families of America, A Genealogical Encyclopedia of the United States" returned quite a number of hits.... and all have the added "Abridged" to the title. I suspect there is not an abridged version. However, I will be pleased to be proven mistaken. Oh.... lol... searched Google again, this time with the author's name...... I *was* mistaken! <http://www.genealogical.com/products/The%20Compendium%20of%20American%20Genealogy/6100.html> <Quote:> ___________________________________________________________ The Compendium of American Genealogy is the most important collection of American lineage records ever published, easily deserving its reputation (as well as its subtitle) as the genealogical encyclopedia of the first families of America. Originally a project of Marquis's Who's Who in America, though later taken under the wing of the Institute of American Genealogy, the Compendium was the brainchild of Frederick A. Virkus, who guided its publication for more than two decades with the express purpose of producing a standard genealogical history of the United States. In keeping with its stated aim, the Compendium contains the lineage records of the first families of America, with records extending in both male and female lines from the earliest-known immigrant ancestor to the then (1925-1942) living subject of the record. According to the first census there were about 650,000 families living in the United States in 1790, practically every one of which was of colonial or Revolutionary stock and thus entitled to be numbered among America's "First Families." Every lineage in the Compendium, therefore, spans at least eight or nine generations. While not all families are represented, almost every name distinguished in any way in the early history of the country will be found within its pages. The Compendium was compiled largely from lineage records and manuscript genealogies submitted by individuals selected for inclusion, many illustrated with photographs, portraits, and coats of arms. Each record was checked and edited, then typed up in the form of a "proof" and returned to the submitter for final review before ultimately being printed in one of the volumes. Thus prepared at great expense of time and labor, and with painstaking care, the seven massive volumes of the Compendium contain more than 54,000 lineage records, with indexes listing upwards of 425,000 names, making it, without doubt, the first reference and research source in American genealogy. While every genealogical line as published can scarcely be said to be correct, it still stands as the major published record of American ancestry and forms a complete genealogical library in itself. ___________________________________________________________ <end quote> Aye, Lauren
I maintain the Boyd Trees data base for me. It is a hobby. I 'collect' family trees that include the name Boyd. The idea predates Ancestry.com and their quaking leaves, but a similar idea. I try to show where the original information came from, and do what I can to collect family information with source documents to support those facts. For example, you were not able to find a census entry for Robert K Boyd. I found an entry that I think is for your Robert K Boyd. If that is the right person, then my data base has helped someone in exchange for all the help I have received from others over the years. Sherry Where you going to reply or add some additional data to John's message? I consider myself lucky. Not only did I find several applications from what I think is my primary line of Boyd's, I found several other grandparents, uncles, and cousins, both near the Boyd line as well as on my mother's side. I value cousins and other family members almost as much as primary family because they help to document movement patterns. Thank you. I found the "free" SAR Apps. and have scrolled thru over 1100 and am calling it a night. Good luck to others also looking for that elusive clue to their ancestors. Sherry: How do you get to the free records on Ancestry this weekend? Every time I find something and then click on it, I get a page to "sign up for the 14-day trial". ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sherry Young" <sherryold@hotmail.com> To: <boyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 03, 2011 8:16 PM Subject: Re: [BOYD] Samuel Boyd & Isabella Higgins > > > >> From: johnhboyd@earthlink.net >> To: boyd-l@rootsweb.com >> Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2011 08:18:54 -0500 >> Subject: [BOYD] Samuel Boyd & Isabella Higgins >> >> Best available evidence (not proof) indicates that Samuel Boyd is my 4th >> great grand uncle.
