I was recently sent a query which said "James Boyd of Killockthorn who married in 1655." I have checked both my maps of Scotland put could not find this name or any similar name listed. I have also looked at the 1691 Hearth Tax list for Ayrshire but again I could not find any similar name. There were a number of John Boyd's in this 1691 Hearth Tax list for Kilmarnock but none under such a name. The name Killockthorn has not come up in George Robertson's books or James Paterson's books either. Do any members of the Ayrshire list know of an place called Killockthorn or perhaps an Estate called that? With James Boyd marriage in 1655, this would suggest that if he is linked to the Chief of the Boyds that his link could go back to the 6th Lord Boyd, who had several sons whom we do not know what happened to them. The 7th, 8th and 9th Lord Boyds only had one son plus a number of daughters. We do not get to any more of the chief's sons until the 10th Lord Boyd and first Earl of Kilmarnock whose sons were born in 1660's and 1670's. Thank you Loretta Yes I found both Killock and Killockhead about 5 kms south of Galston. I have another branch of Boyd who had a James Boyd born about 1749 at Brunt Mains Glaston. I could not find that name but found Bruntwood Mains about 1 kms to the NW of Killock, with another farm between them. So I assume that the names ahve changed over the last few hundred years. Members New Abbey, Dumfriesshire is west and across the river from the Maxwell's Castle at Caerlaverock. It is south of Dumfries. While Robert the Bruce gave Sir Robert Boyd lands about the same distance north of Dumfries at Dalswinton and Duncow. If you are driving from Kilmarnock and going to England, there is both a nice drive along the Ayrshire coast to Stranrear and tehn alonmg the A75 road to Dumfries or staight down the A76 road from Kilmarnock to Dumfries. This might be an area that both our Scottish cousins could expolore or those overseas tourist. I downloaded the photo and enlarged it. I believe it is Easton Glen. Easton is spelled with the old style s that resembled an f. I could not find an Easton Glen but that could be the name of a farm or a house. There is also some famous burials at Sweetheart Abbey: John de Baliol and Devorguilla de Galloway the parents of John Balliol, who was crowned King of Scotland on November 30, 1292. I guess old Mungo was buried in good company. There are also several members of Ancestry.com who have Mungo Boyd in their trees. Pat I will send you a private letter as soon as I post this to you. I am sending this query to Boyd list so that other Boyds who are researching for their Boyds around Ayr town might be able to help you as well if they have a James Boyd (second most common Boyd name) who married Mary Oswald (or some other spelling variation). St. Quivox and Newton (on Ayr) are suburbs of Ayr town. Yolanda and others with links to the U-198 group. The purpose of my earlier Email was to tell descendants of William Boyd's from northern Ireland that they not only need to LOOK in Northern Ireland for where this William Boyd came from but within a "few" generations they may/will need to be looking at the Boyds on the Scottish Border and Northern England. It would "appear" that Lord Robert Boyd took at least one relative with him to Alnwick in 1469, but there might have more. With Linda's Robert Boyd, born in 1728. When I was reading Scott Lee Boyd's book of 1935 at Mindy's where worked out that Linda's Robert Boyd, born in 1728 was not the son of William Boyd, who son Robert was underage when he died and therefore born in the 1740's. However, Scott had two other brothers from whom Linda's Robert might have been a son to give use the DNA links that we are getting. I will write to Mindy shortly to get her to Email me these pages. So you will be looking for Boyd families that moved to northern Ireland in the late 1600's AND MOST LIKELY MOVED FROM THE SCOTTISH/ENGLISH BORDER REGION to Ireland. Thank you. Good hunting Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yolanda Boyd" <ymlboyd@sbcglobal.net> To: <boyd@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 5:42 AM Subject: Re: [BOYD] DNA Link to two separate Boyd Branches and the ScottishBorder Region Hi Mike, Clint is a match to Cal in the U-198 group, but they are a genetic distance of 4 at 67 markers. Clint is a genetic distance of 3 at 67 markers to David Boyd of Maryland. So, David and Cal are likely closer related to each other than they are to Clint. While we do not have any matches closer than a genetic distance of 3 at 67 markers, we still are not likely to have common ancestors until about 12 generations and we are only back 9 generations with Clint's oldest known ancestor in the 1730's. So, we are looking at 1650 or earlier when we should have a common ancestor. This would make sense if with the historical movement if part of the Boyds fled to Northumberland and some others moved to Ireland as part of the plantations. We just have to get our trees back a bit farther to find the common ancestors. Yolanda
Yolanda and others This is an example of where you need to go (or get on) locational Net list. So Yolanda are you already on the Northumberland, England Rootsweb net list AND the Berwick rootsweb net list. If not you will need to do so and post what infromation you have on the your known family. You will be trying to find other unknown siblings, whom they married and where they are buried, etc so that hopefully you can find "lost" cousins or get people to do some look ups in these two areas for you Mike Boyd Historical Commitee, HBS ----- Original Message ----- From: "Yolanda Boyd" <ymlboyd@sbcglobal.net> To: <boyd@rootsweb.com>; <BOYD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 07, 2011 11:53 PM Subject: Re: [BOYD] When did the Boyd's go to the Scottish Border area? Hi Mike, My husband, Clint's, Boyd line was concentrated in the Borders of England/Scotland until they moved to South Africa in the 1890's. In our research, we have not been able to connect to all the other families in the borders, but can't say that they aren't related in the 1700's or earlier. His oldest known Boyd is Ralph Boyd (Boid), b. abt 1733/38 and lived in the Doddington/Chatton/Wooler area of Northumberland, England. He married Ann Brown in Chatton in 1758 and moved the family to Norham, Northumberland, along the border of Scotland where they were tenant farmers. They baptized their children at Spittal United Presbyterian in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, England. Their son, Aaron Boyd, b. 1769, married Margaret Steele and baptized their first child at Haggerston Roman Catholic before they moved to Westruther, Berwick, Scotland where they were tenant farmers at Whitburn Farm. They moved there along with Aaron's sister, Margaret, who married Alexander Bird, tenant farmer at Thornidyke, Westruther. The siblings lived within 1 mile of each other. There was another Boyd family who were tenant farmers of the same landlord who lived 1 mile away from them, John Boyd of Broomybank (and Elizabeth Tait) who would have been about the same age as Aaron Boyd. We don't know if this is just a coincidence or if they were cousins. Aaron Boyd's son, Thomas Boyd b. 1799, married Barbara Turnbull and lived in Greenlaw, Berwick, Scotland. He was a coachdriver and died of smallpox in 1837. His son Robert Boyd, b. 1836 in Greenlaw, married Christina Hood and lived in a variety of areas of Berwickshire, including Duns, Lauder, Eccles and Langton. This family moved to Liverpool, England between the 1880 and 1890 census. My husbands gggrandfather, Thomas Boyd, b. 1960 did not follow his parents to Liverpool. He was in the Argyllshire Highlanders and moved with his wife, Annie Ross to South Africa where the family remained for generations.
