Does anyone have any knowledge in which town these 6 children were born in? There is an Halifax County in Va formed in 1752 and one in NC formed in 1758. So I am thinking that the Davenport researcher may have confused his Halifax Counties between the two States. The Scottish Migration to Ulster in the Reign of James I, by M. Perceval-Maxwell (date?), page 333 conflict on Sir Thomas Boyd of Bedlay. On page 333, in Appendix C, it says:- "6. BOYD, Sir Thomas of Bedlay: Shean, 1,500 acres, Strabane barony, Tyrone. Second son of the sixth Lord Boyd. From Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Married Marion, the earl of Abercorn's sister. (footnote 22 - Scots peerage, v. 166-7; Cal pat. rolls. Chas I, p 520) This connexion explains his selection as an undertaker in Strabane. Ulster patent dates 29 August 1610. Carew's report: resident and preparing to build. (footnote 23 - BM, Add, MS 4794, 501; Inq. canell. Hib. report, Ult., Tyrone, Jac I, 5; Lam Pal, Carew MS 630, f. 100) By 1613 the proportion had passed to Abercorn. Bedley's report: about 100 'house-holders' on Abercorn's proportion, including Shean. Building had began. Pynnar's report: 100 men on Shean. A bawn was nearly finished and a castle had been started. (footnote 24 - HMC, Hastings, iv. 181; Hill Plantations, pp 529-30) 1622 report: twenty British families and 120 Irish families on the proportion. The building was, as yet, unfinished. (footnote 25 - BM, Add. MS 4756, f. 110)" While The Scots Peerage, Vol. 5, p 166 that Perceval-Maxwell cites, says this about Sir Thomas Boyd:- "2. Sir Thomas of Bedlay. He is mentioned 5 January 1600 as being a rebel, and having been put to the horn, (footnote 2 - P. C. Reg.) and on 14 October 1608 he is denounced with others for not paying an annualrent of 250 merks 'for the term of Whitsunday 1605, and for all years resting owing,' and not appearing to answer, the Privy Council order his apprehension. (footnote 3 - Ibid.) He had a Charter from John Boyd of Bolinshaw, 12 February 1605, of the lands of Bolinshaw in fulfilment of his marriage contract with Grizel Cunningham, which lands he sold to David Cunningham of Auchenharvie, afterwards Baronet, 30 November 1633, having been knighted before 17 October 1623. (footnote 4 - Reg. Mag. Sig., confirmed 26 July 1634.) He married (contract dated 22 October 1603) (footnote 5 - Boyd Charter-chest. ) Grizel Cunningham, daughter (footnote 6 - Paterson's Ayr, ii. 178.) of Jean Blair, Lady Montgrenan. They were both alive in 1634, but apparently no issue then living." You will note from the passage in The Scots Peerage, is in conflict with Perceval-Maxwell statement that Sir Thomas Boyd of Bedley's wife was Marion Hamilton. I think that Burke's Peerage and Baronetage, also says that Sir Thomas married Grizel Cunningham and not Marion Hamilton, along with a number of other sources. Sir Thomas Boyd's sister - Marion Boyd - did marry James Hamilton, first Earl of Abercorn which The Scots Peerage says about her:- "6. Marion, married to James (Hamilton), first Earl of Abercorn, who died at Monkton 23 March 1618. She survived him, and was a very active Catholic, being in consequence continually in trouble with the Privy Council. On 20 January 1628 she was excommunicated in the Kirk of Paisley for her contumacy. (footnote 2 - P. C. Reg., N.S., iii. 109) She died in the Canongate, Edinburgh, 26 August 1632, and was buried beside her husband in the Abbey church at Paisley 13 September following. (footnote 3 - Cf. vol. i. 47.)" Canada did not become a County until 1867, I think, so Lower Canada or Quebec province might be the answer. Can our Canadian cousins confirm this please.
