For those of our USA cousins who have been suffering form over 100 degress F of heat, yesterday much of New Zealand had snow. >From our TV News it would appear that Christchurch had about a foot - the second time this year. A once in a decade event. While cities like Wellington and Auckland also appear to have had snow - which for them is very unusal. So hears hoping that our Kiwi cousins came out of this snow storm in one peice. Mike Boyd Brisbane, Aust.
Haven't you city folk heard of gumboots (what do you wear in the mud after the snow?) In my capacity of V.P. I will be hosting a Boyd tent at Stone Mountain. PLEASE! If any of you will be in the area of Atlanta October 14-16 please stop by the games. I really could use some help manning the tent, greeting visitors, and in general being an ambassador of good will. I also would invite any/all of you to join me in the parade of tartans. Let's show the Scottish community that we are THE BOYDS! Charlene If my grey cells are working, I think you told me in 2010 when I visited you that your family DNA test went back 24 generations to a common link. This would put in the time period of Sir Robert Boyd who fought with Wallace and Bruce - 1295 to 1314. Your family came from Patrick County, Virginia - if I recall correctly. I am just completting another project which has Boyds from the Fort William area of Argyllshire, WHOM are said to have gone to Ireland with Edward Bruce in 1315 and after his defeat in 1318 went to Argyllshire with the Macleans. This would make them the oldest known Cadet Branch of the Clan. They might be younger brothers to Sir Robert Boyd [D1] or even uncles to him. I have yet to learn if the Boyds and Macleans fought in the same "Division" at Bannockburn in 1314. That may explain why this group of Boyd decided to go to Argyllshire rather than back to Ayrshire. The family I have only starts in the mid 1700's. BUT this area is not the "best" farming area, so younger sons would have had to move outside of the district to find work or an occupation. So could SOME OF THIS BOYD FAMILY THAT WENT WITH THE MACLEAN's have gone to Ireland either before or after 1609 Plantation period and then in the 1700's moved to the USA, including Virginia? I AM NOT SURE HOW WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PROVE OR DISPROVE THIS THEORY - but some of the readers of the list or those who like to use google might liek to do some searching. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
Note to self: check the "send to" before sending. Sorry, my reply was meant for Mindy. However, "y'all come, ya hear?" It's just not worth a long trip from the Pittsburgh area, as it is for Mindy, if it's raining when she gets here. Sorry! In a message dated 8/15/2011 9:36:52 A.M. If you live anywhere near Central PA, you may want to come to the annual McLain Celtic Festival in Carlisle on Saturday, September 3rd. I will be working in the Scottish Society Tent and I WILL bring along some House of Boyd Society publicity. The Clan Hay tent is usually beside ours and the sponsor is always willing to display some Boyd info and discuss the Boyd/Hay connection. So, if it's not too far to travel, come out, have some fun, and make some new friends! All the details are here: _http://www.historicalsociety.com/tmhfestival.html_ (http://www.historicalsociety.com/tmhfestival.html) If you do need or want overnight lodging, just scroll down at the web site and there is a special rate available for that also. On Find A Grave there are 1486 Australian Cemeteries and 256 Boyd burials. Remember memorial are all created by volunteers who either have loved ones buried at the respective cemeteries or they may just happen to live near a particular cemetery and have done a survey of that cemetery. Members With only 580 Boyd's listed in this Ancestry data base, it would mean that may Cemeteries have yet to included. Where my own Boyd family comes from on the Tweed River area of New South Wales would make up most of those 580 names alone and I know that there are "quite" a lot more Boyd families in Australia than just my own family. So you will need to look in other areas to find your Boyd ancestors in Australia.
