    3. Mike, Remember our visit to the cemetery's for George Boyd and Rev. Adam Boyd etc? If you go southeast on that road (St. Route 10 then veer east on 41) you will cross first Londonderry Township and then Londongrove Township. They literally touch each other on the north and west border. 9 Miles from Parkesburg to center of Londonderry Township. Parkesburg to New London is 16 miles, and further south of the other two. It would make sense to place families in Londonderry and Londongrove as related. Like George below, they could have started in Londongrove and then been in Londonderry, and never moved. New London would be a greater stretch of distance between families. Based on histories, New London is a primary township formed for the London Company circa 1704. It later splits and the north becomes Londongrove Township about 1723. Londonderry Township is formed even farther north in 1734. However, that land had been settled at least 10 years before the township was created, New London has a large Welsh and Quaker population. Scotch Irish of 1720s would have disembarked at New Castle, Delaware gone inland 20 miles and hit Londongrove (bypassing a settled New London area). 9 more miles north and they are "out of sight" of the political and religious leaders of that time. George Boyd (1709-1767) is the major Londongrove Boyd family. His church, Faggs Manor, is across the current modern township line in Londonderry Township. Easy travel distance from Londongrove, home of George. 3. New London Township Chester County, Pennsylvania New London Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,631 at the 2010 census. It was the birthplace of U.S. Founding Father Thomas McKean. Wikipedia Population: 4,583 (2000) http://www.newlondontwp.net/ About New London Township New London was originally the home of the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe. It was visited by early farmers and explorers, but began to grow when the London Company, a group of five entrepreneurs, purchased a large tract of land in order the break the tract into smaller lots and sell them at a profit to immigrant farmers. This tract included present-day New London Township, which was chartered in 1723. The first immigrants were Swedish framers from New Castle Delaware. The next wave of immigration brought Scottish Irish Presbyterians. In 1741, Rev. Dr. Francis Alison, then the minister of the New London Presbyterian Church, established the original New London Academy (the parent school of the University of Delaware) where he instructed three signers of the Declaration of Independence: Thomas McKean, George Read, and James Smith. He also instructed four governors and many other important citizens. New London residents were prominent patriots in the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin, who farmed property in nearby Franklin Township and was in charge of the Pennsylvania Militia, encouraged local families to rally to the cause and to provide horses, manpower, and supplies. The area was a hub for stagecoaches going from Baltimore to Philadelphia and from Lancaster to Perryville, Maryland. George Washington kept a relay of coach horses in the village, the White Clay headwaters behind the stable providing their water. After the Revolutionary War, New London continued to be a busy crossroads village. At one time the town had two inns, a blacksmith shop, saddlery shop, wheelwright, shoemaker, tailor, tinsmith, tannery, an apothecary and several general stores. In 1828 a board of trustees was incorporated to revive the original New London Academy at the site of the present Township building. The building burned in 1848 and was immediately rebuilt. An addition to the rear of the building was added in 1915. In 1803 a library was established. That same year the fourth Post Office in Chester County was opened at the New London Crossroads. On October 28, 1847 the name was changed from New London Crossroads to New London. New London township's champion Pendant Linden New London Township has two State Champion trees, which are determined by a State Forester measuring the circumference at chest height (4 1/2 feet) and limb spread. One is a (Tilia petiolaris) and the other is an English Walnut (Juglans regia). The Township of New London also has two covered bridges, the Linton Stephens Covered Bridge and the Rudolph & Arthur Covered Bridge which are on the National Historic Register. London Grove Township Chester County, Pennsylvania London Grove Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,475 at the 2010 census. Wikipedia Population: 5,265 (2000) http://www.londongrove.org/ London Grove Township is located in southern Chester County in Pennsylvania’s rolling Piedmont Region. The Township traditionally has been an agricultural community. And while agriculture is still a major part of the Township, recently London Grove has become an attractive place to live as development pushes west from Philadelphia and north from Wilmington, Delaware. The Township was incorporated in 1723 and is home to not only 7,500 people but to dairy, horse and mushroom farms. We also boast the Federally designated Wild & Scenic White Clay Creek, the historic Village of Chatham, a vineyard, a championship-class golf course and special events such as the Laurels at Landhope Combined Driving competition. Londonderry Township is a township in Chester County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,149 at the 2010 census. http://www.londonderrytownship.org/history.html History of Londonderry Township Londonderry Township was officially created in 1734. During this time, Londonderry shined in religious and educational accomplishments. The local topography of Londonderry's streams, valleys, and ridges provided natural travel routes for the Lenape Indians and for early English settlers in the area. Although no official record of archaeological resources exists for the area, there is little doubt that Lenape encampments and possibly villages were located here, with trails running through the area. The first group of European settlers was a small group of Scotch-Irish immigrants, who named Londonderry for a town in Ireland. Generally, early English settlers followed two routes: 1) up the Elk River and south from Octoraro Creek and 2) over the hills of what is now Highland Township. The two paths met at Faggs Manor. Faggs Manor still exists today consisting of Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church and Faggs Manor Cemetery. The Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church was organized in 1730 and is located in the northwest corner of Faggs Manor which was originally a Lenape Indian camp site. The earliest sermons were held under an oak grove near the present-day location of the church. The present church was built in 1846 under Rev. Alfred Hamilton's guidance. The first pastor, Rev. Samuel Blair, achieved great fame as a scholar and pulpit orator during his career from 1740 to 1751. Many residents walked as many as six miles to hear his sermons. Saint Malachi Roman Catholic Church, originally named Doe Run Catholic Church, held its first service in a local barn in 1771. Saint Malachi's is believed to be the second-oldest Catholic Church in the County. In 1794 a small parcel on the McGuire farm was donated to the church for a cemetery. The stucco-over-stone church building was constructed beside the cemetery in 1839 occupying a beautiful site overlooking the Doe Run valley. Saint Malachi became a mission to the Parkesburg parish in 1953. Used for little more than a decade, the actual building was torn down and replaced with the current structure in 1865. By the 1880's the Doe Run congregation consisted of roughly 30 Catholic families from the area. In the early 1900's the congregation had declined so much that services were held infrequently, often not for years at a time. The church stood vacant until 1952 when a congregation was reestablished at Saint Malachi. Doe Run Meeting House, also known as Londonderry Friends Meeting House and ultimately as Derry Meeting, was established by the Society of Friends in 1805. Early meetings were held at a schoolhouse on or near the current site. The present brick structure dates to 1883. In 1811 the meeting was established as a branch of the Fallowfield Monthly Meeting. Fallowfield sold the building in the early 1900's. Since then the Derry Meeting has served as a private residence. Along with the religious influence in Londonderry, farming was the predominant industry. Early farms produced hay and corn for livestock and wheat and buckwheat for flour. Wheat and buckwheat were processed in the gristmills, which could be found throughout the township taking advantage of the many streams that flow through the township from the headwater of the Big Elk Creek. Farm and church life dominated early Londonderry Township along with a succession of 19th and 20th century businesses in the rural community. Trades people included furniture makers, storekeepers, auctioneers, creamery owners, greenhouses, attorneys, blacksmith, sawmill and gristmill operators, and undertakers. One of the earliest businesses in Londonderry Township was a sawmill, circa 1765, located along the Big Elk Creek along Ewing Road. The township had at least four schoolhouses: Ramsey School at Faggs Manor and Baker Roads, Coates School at north Faggs Manor Road, Whitehorse School at Rt. 926, and Forest Shade School on Greenlawn Road. Londonderry was a thriving community in the early part of the 18th century and is now a quiet rural township which the residents consider a jewel of Chester County.

    1. Re: [BOYD] Boyd of Lancaster County 1790 US Census - who are they?
    2. Colin Brooks
    3. OK- so the 1790 census (and all up to 1930) are free and online. However, they are not indexed. You need to know locations before browsing OR spend a long winters weekend glued to the computer screen :) In the 1790 Lancaster County census only DRUMORE township exists. "Dunmore" always was an incorrect spelling. In Drumore (next to Martick in the census) there are only two BOYD's. John Boyd with a family , and Samuel Boyd all by himself (means over age 18). The cool thing is this census guy did not do alphabetical listing. He did it in order of houses he visited. SO we can make a really good guess that not only are John and Samuel living right next door, they are also related. Since no other Boyd is in that township we have no missing links!! 2. Mike I would gladly take any help from PA cousins in regards to look ups. It's possible that John Boyd and Nancy Spence were married in Martic, Lancaster Co. PA where John lived also. A Van Wert Co. History say that John and Nancy were married in 1826 and indicates that is was in PA. And just looking now Mt Nebo and Martic are only a couple of miles apart. I have two sources for Nancy Pence, but since the one also seems to be in error about the wedding date and place I think we can toss that to the side and the other is a Lawrence Co. OH history that has Joseph Boyd and names his parents as John Boyd and Nancy Pence. Since Joseph lived with the Wards and not with his father it's quite easy to believe that he got the maiden name of his mother wrong. Nancy Spence looks to be the correct name for John Boyd's wife. Nancy appears to be the child of John Spence b. 1755/65 Ireland, d. 2 July 1832 Martic, Lancaster Co. PA and Anna Souder b. 16 Jan 1768 Lampeter Twp, Lancaster Co. OH. d. 1810/19 Martic, Lancaster Co. PA. For anyone out there that is familiar with PA records, how far back do county vital records go and how well were they kept? I know the further south and west from N.E. the less chance there is of finding records from earlier time periods, but occasionally you can luck out and find one. I would like to encourage those Boyd on the west side of the state to mark your calendars for the San Antonio Highland Games, which will be April 5^th and 6^th of 2014 at the Helotes Fairground. This has traditionally been a very large event that includes all the traditional contests: dancing, piping, and highland games, but also features my favorite event The Herding Dog Championships! I hope to not only host the House of Boyd Society tent there this year but to find someone in the San Antonio area who may be interested in helping out with a presence at this event in the future as well as other events in Texas such as the Houston Celtic Festival and Highland Games which will be April 26^th and 27^th of 2014, or any other gatherings where there should be a Boyd presence. Anyone who might be up for such a task can get in touch with me via email and I will be happy to put your time to use. Confido! Barry Boyd HoBS Convenor for Texas

    1. Re: [BOYD] Boyd of Lancaster County 1790 US Census - who are they?
    2. Mike Boyd
    3. Is there someone who might be able to look at the original 1790 US Census to see if these Boyds form Lancaster County, PA lived in "Dunmore" or in "Drumore"? This might be a case of a typing error when the original data was posted to a net site. Yes I realise that Martick of 1790 is now spelt as Martic. If I recall, Drumore is close by Martic. I will have to find my PA map to have a look Hopefully, by looking at the 1790 Lancaster County Census results, we can make some GUESSES about who these families are linked. Mike, You are correct in assuming that Lancaster County's modern borders were formed by 1790. However, Martick township is now spelled Martic and the only Dunmore township that I can find in Pennsylvania is near Scranton. There is a Drumore township in Lancaster County in the area that you are searching. I am not certain of any of the people that you are searching for as I have not gotten back further than 1810 in my Boyd line. Jean

    1. [BOYD] The Boyd Family by Scott lee Boyd
    2. Cal boyd
    3. I recently acquired a new copy. I originally acquired the book when I was in WA. state. That was only 6 mos. after I caught "the" Genealogy bug. That was over 20 yrs ago. Hurricane Katrina claimed all my hard copy work. My efforts to save my computer data didn't work out as planned. So, I'm kinda back to square one and my long-term memory is failing. Even the book looks different. Awrabest, Cal
