>From the book The Boyds of Boyds Tank, by Frank Ewell Boyd & William Taylor Boyd. (1970), page 24, tells us that the second child of Henry Boyd and Susan Heard was William Wilson Boyd. Henry and Susan lived out their days in the Long Cane community of Troup County. “2-William Wilson Boyd (1821-1864), married Mary Rebecca Fears December 14, 1847 in Chambers County, Alabama. He died in the Civil War near Orange Court House, Virginia, April 17, 1864. They had two children -Mary Susan Rebecca, born in 1852, married (1) J. D. Trammell in 1870 and (2) J. L. Askew in 1888, and William Henry Fears, born in 1862. He married Annie C. Croft in 1884. These families lived at West Point, Georgia.” I am not sure if “West Point Georgia” is within Troup County, Georgia or outside it. While seeing that William died “in the Civil War near Orange Court House, Virginia, April 17, 1864” would suggest that he was fighting with one of the CSA units there. Unfortunately it does not say which one or where he was buried. So can any of your Virginian cousins near the Orange Court House have a look to see if there is any there is any cemetery where he might be buried please? Do any members of the list belong to William Wilson Boyd and Mary Rebecca Fears family? If so, I would like to hear from you. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
We have received a new photo related to the "Boyd Family. I am wondering if there are any Boyd's on this list that came from Australia?? Vickie If you want to view the new photo it's at http://www.idaphoto.net/boyd.html
Apparently West Point actually crosses the county line between Troup County and Harris County. The major portion of the town lies in Troup County. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Mike Boyd Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2013 6:14 PM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: [BOYD] William Wilson Boyd (1821-1864), who married Mary Rebecca Fears, the second child of Henry Boyd and Susan Heard of Troup County, Georgia >From the book The Boyds of Boyds Tank, by Frank Ewell Boyd & William Taylor Boyd. Harriet This sounds like Captain (Army) Joseph Coffin Boyd (1760-1823) who moved to Portland Maine soon after 1784 and married Isabella Southgate and they had 14 children This family is outlined in the book "history of the Boyd clan and Related Families, Frederick Tilghman Boyd, 1962. While a number of things are listed for his life, but there was no mention of shipbuilding. They say that "he went into trade" which might suggest he was a shipping merchant or someone who was involved with the import export trade. Perhaps this be an area that some of our New England cousins might like to put on their research list. Thank you Mike Boyd -----Original Message----- From: Harriet E. Does anyone on this list live in Troup County, Georgia, so they can tell us what Boyd graves are at the Boyd family cemetery at Long Cane? >From the book The Boyds of Boyds Tank, by Frank Ewell Boyd & William Taylor Boyd. (1970), pages 22-23 the following outline is provided of the family of Richard Coleman Boyd and his wife Frances (Fanny) Walden, daughter of Samuel Wallden and Mary Dismukes. This family initially moved from Virginia to Slab Camp Branch of Rose Creek in the Greene/Clarke County area in 1782. In 1797 they moved to Jasper County settling on Murder Creek, some 16 miles northwest of Monticello near the Jasper/Newton County line. I would assume that other Boyd had already reached Georgia before this family arrived in 1782. You will notice that this book says that Richard and Fanny had eleven children but only lists seven of them. So can anyone supply the names and details of the other four children? The book give some details on the sons Henry Boyd, who moved to Long Cane, Troup County, Georgia; Richard Boyd, Jr. who moved to Sturkie, Chambers County, Alabama and John Coleman Boyd who moved to Boyd Tank, Chambers County, Alabama in the 1830’s takes up the remainder of the book. So if anyone has connections to Samuel, Frances (Fanny), Sarah, Nancy Boyd and their families, I would like to hear from you also. Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS 23/11/2013 “Chapter IV THE GEORGIA BOYDS Richard Boyd, the son of Patrick and Ann Wells Boyd, was born in 1753, and married Frances (Fanny) Walden of Virginia in 1782. She was born February 8, 1757. Richard and Fanny Boyd moved to Georgia and lived for a short time in the Greene/Clarke County area on Slab Camp Branch which flows into Rose Creek which runs into the Oconee River. In 1797 they moved to Jasper County, settling in old District 19 on Murder Creek, some 16 miles northwest of Monticello near the Jasper/Newton County line. Hall's map of Georgia (1895) shows the original counties and land districts of this early period. Boyds, Waldens and relatives had drawn lots for land grants in Jasper and several adjoining counties, including Greene, Newton, Morgan, Walton, Wilkinson, Clarke and Oconee. All Revolutionary soldiers were eligible to participate in land lotteries. Such lotteries were discontinued in 1840. A search in the Murder Creek watershed failed to locate Richard Boyd's homesite or burial plot. Too frequently graves of this period were not adequately marked and houses often have been completely obliterated. However, the Boyd land holdings are recorded in Jasper County Court House Deed Books. In this area is an old Murder Creek Church and Cemetery and many small family/farm burial plots. The church building was still standing in 1968 but it had been abandoned. The cemetery continues to be used by slave descendants. Richard and Fanny Walden Boyd had eleven children but only seven lived to maturity, namely: 1-Samuel, born October 8, 1782; died in 1835. He married Elizabeth - - - (Spears?). John and Polly Spears witnessed Samuel's will dated March 13, 1835. Elizabeth died in 1853. Their children were-Richard A., Elizabeth A., Martha, Sarah, Fanny, Jacovah C., Mark, Samuel Jr., William and Jonah. 2-Frances (Fanny), born January 28, 1787, married (1) Daniel Trammel November 24, 1809 in Clarke County and (2) William S. Bond in 1818. It seems that the Bonds moved to Chambers County, Alabama, where he died. 3-Sarah (Sally), born January 30, 1791, married Thomas W. Hester December 28, 1808 in Clarke County. Hester was born in Virginia in 1785 and died in Troup County, Georgia, in 1850. Sally died in Troup County. 4-Nancy, born February 12, 1793, married Eaton Banks July 10, 1815 in Jasper County. 5-Richard Jr., born September 4, 1795; died in 1857. He married Lucy Farley July 19, 1815 in jasper County. They finally settled at Sturkie in Chambers County, Alabama. 6-Henry, born May 20, 1797; died April 17, 1848. He married Susan Heard December 6, 1818. They settled at Long Cane, Troup County, Georgia. 7-John Coleman, born March 16, 1802; died March 2, 1861. He married (1) Caroline M. Banks May 6, 1823 in jasper County and (2) Elizabeth M. 22 Glass January 30, 1855 in Harris County, Georgia. He homesteaded at Boyds Tank, Chambers County, Alabama, in the 1830's. The above birth and marriage dates indicate that the first five of these children were born in Virginia and that Henry and John Coleman were born in Georgia. Richard Sr. left a will dated July 6, 1822 (Annual Return Book #4 page 6). He died September 28, 1823. His will was probated November 7, 1823 in Jasper County and recorded in Minute Book C-1823-1832-page 24. Many descendants of Samuel and Elizabeth Boyd continue to live in jasper and Newton Counties in Georgia. Samuel's homestead was established in jasper County near the Newton County line. In the Tabernacle and Mansfield Cemeteries in Newton County are several Boyd graves. Richard A. Boyd (1809-1840), son of Samuel and Elizabeth Boyd, married Nancy Kelly (1810-1855) on August 8, 1832. They were buried in Tabernacle Cemetery in well-marked graves. Descendants of the Kelly family continue to live in jasper County. The E. C. Kelly family of Monticello have valuable BoydKelly family records. Richard A. Boyd's son, Julius C. (1839-1902). and Julius' son, Richard Frank (1868-1925), were buried in the Mansfield Cemetery. Richard Frank's son, Homer Troy (b.1895), lives at Monticello. Homer has four brothers and four sisters living nearby. Homer's aunt, Julius' youngest daughter, Mrs. John Lazenby, lives near Mansfield (1967). Descendants of Richard and Fanny Walden Boyd's children-Fanny (Trammell-Bond), Sally (Hester) and Nancy (Banks) also live in the two-county area. The O. H. Banks family of Shady Dale, Jasper County, have old family records. The senior Richard Boyd's three youngest children-Richard Jr., Henry and John Coleman-are vital to the Boyd Story. They lead us to Troup County, Georgia, and to Chambers County, Alabama. These three brothers sold their interests in jasper County to relatives and friends and moved to Long Cane in Troup County in the late 1820's. In the early 1830's the brothers Richard Jr. and John Coleman disposed of their Georgia interests and bought land in Alabama. With their families they probably crossed the Chattahoochee River at the shoals "where the Wehadkee Creek pours its waters into the river." They homesteaded in the Sturkie and Boyds Tank communities in Chambers County. These sites and Long Cane are shown on an Alabama-Georgia Quadrangle map (1907) available from the United States Department of Interior Geological Survey. Thus our Boyd line of descent comes down from Scotland, to Ireland, to Pennsylvania, to Virginia, to Georgia, to Alabama. This overall migration period involved about 300 years.

Details? DAVID BOYD, son of John Boyd and Nancy URIE, was born on 23 March 1743 in Northumberland, County, Pennsylvania and died 16 July 1831 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was captured by the Delawares tribe of the Iroquois Indians in 1756 and held in captivity to 1763, when he was returned to his father. He never saw his sisters again until they came home in 1763. They were held as prisoners seven years, and were exchanged at Detroit, but not at the same time. They were never together during their captivity. This exchange was done under Col. Boquet. He fought in the Revolutionary War, enlisting three times, serving continously throughout the war. A private in Capt. James Chambers Company and a rifleman in Col. William Thompson's Battalion. He was engaged on the bloody field of the Brandywine, saw the crossing of the Delaware, and the surprise at Trenton. He was at Valley Forge during that terrible winter when the blood from the bare feet of the soldiers marked the frozen ground. He told of the elation in the army on the arrival of La Fayette, bringing succor from France. He was present in the army of Gates when Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in 1777, and was also with Washington when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. He had the rank of Lieutenant. He married Elizabeth HENDERSON in 1771. She died in 1825. In the County where he was captured ten children were born to him, the five older being daughters, the five younger being sons. On account of his large family he decided to move west, and accordingly, in the autumn of 1794, came to Washington County, (PA)?. He purchased a farm, nine miles west of Washington, on the West Middletown road. Here he attended the Presbyterian church at Upper Buffulo. He was a great reader and loved books. History, politics and theology were well represented in his library. The DAR Patriot Index of 1990 has this entry which would appear to be the above David:- "David: b 3-23-1743 PA d 7-16-1831 PA m Elizabeth Henderson Pvt PA" [dates US style] This family is from Shippensburg, Cumberland County, PA While this Christ Irwin, Robert Boyd, John Kirkpatrick, John Irwin - whom appear to be from Letterkenny Township, Franklin County, PA This Robert Boyd I believe is the Captain Robert Boyd that is outlined Max Perry's book of 1987. He had a son Samuel Boyd - so I am not sure if he is the same person mentioned in 1754. So could these two Boyd families have come from Ireland together with the Irwin, Kirkpatrick and Hendersons. Have you seen this possible connection? *Joseph Henderson (in right of Samuel Boyd), February 20, 1754. Neighbors: Christ Irwin, Robert Boyd, John Kirkpatrick, John Irwin. * The above is from earliest land titles in Letterkenny Township, Franklin County (modern), Pennsylvania. All your families in one :)What I need to do is see if I can find an Esther Boyd. Regardless, all those folks lumped together are no coincidence. So which family are you asking about? Boyd, Henderson or Irwin? Apparently the Boyd Cemetery is listed in the database as part of the following source: "00100-03: Troup County ... Family, Church, and Community Cemeteries in Troup County by Dorothy McLendon, Lillie Lambert, Danny Knight (1990). Also included is the Confederate Cemetery in LaGrange. I was told at the Troup County Library that the cemetery is completely overgrown and almost impossible to get to. I live 3 hours away and have limited time but hope to find it one day. The Library has wonderful collection of material from Mrs. Roland Shaefer Heard, Mrs. Charles Mellard Jamison and Mrs. Julius C. Moore, descendants of Henry and Susan Heard Boyd. The Janie Lovelace Heard papers are a treasure. CEMETERY INFORMATION Long Cane Troup County Georgia USA Cemetery notes and/or description: "Family, Church and Community Cemeteries of Troup County, Georgia", edited by McClendon, Lambert and Knight, pages 22 & 23: Henry Boyd Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Land Lot 295 of land District 5. The graves there are unmarked. Anyone interested in this family should consult the following: "Pine Log and Greek Revival", by William H. Davidson, which contains photographs of the Boyd Home; the Janie Lovelace Heard papers at the Troup County Archives, which contain information on the Boyd and Heard families complete with immigrant ancestors; and "The Boyds of Boyds Tank", which details the early history of the Boyd family. As noted at Find a Grave.com the following are listed as buried there Henry Boyd b mar 20, 1797 d. Apr 17, 1848 John Lee "Jack" Boyd. b. Apr. 7, 1838 d.Feb 24, 1904 Nancy C. The 25th day of March in the Year of our Lord one Thousand seven hundred and sixty three, deposeth (Joseph) Henderson of the colony of Virginia and County of Lunenburgh being sick and weak in body but in perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it was appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament....That is to say....and touching which worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give devise and dispose of same in the following manner by my Executrix hereafter named. And my well beloved wife Esther Henderson whom I constitute make and ordain my only sole executor as to my worldly estate I positively order that all my debts be paid and satisfied. Item. It is my will that my lands, horses, cows, sheep, hogs, remain unprised and unsold for the support and raising and schooling of my children, viz. Mary, James, Robert, John, Joseph, Samuel, a! nd Abraham. Likewise it is my Will that those my well beloved friends James Boyd and Abraham Erwin whom I constitute and order to be my Trustees to have an oversight of my Wife and Children in Counsel and Direction in Disposing or any thing or in buying anything that Necessity calls for. It is likewise my Will that my Wife Esther Henderson shall not dispose of nor buy any necessary without their advice and concurrance likewise it is my Will that if my Widow after my decease incline to marry that my lands horses cows sheep and hogs and all moveables be sold by these my beloved Trustees and that my wife shall have the third of all, the rest equally divided amonst my children above named when they come of age. It is my will that if my Widdo Marry, my Children as they come to a suitable age be bound out to trades and that the young ones live with their Mother till the youngest child come to the age of ten years, and that they be raised out of the whole estate and revoking all W! ills by me made and published I declare this as my Last Will and Testa ment in Witness hearof I set my hand and seal in the day and year above mentioned. Joseph Henderson (seal) In Presents of Robert Erwin Martha Boyd Probate: Nov 10, 1763 I tend to think wife Esther may be a Boyd. And the Martha Boyd mentioned may be either James Boyd's wife or maybe a sister? I do not know. John Irvin was married to Margaret Boyd and their eldest son was Abraham Irvin. In 1763, John Irwin and Abraham Irwin bought land from John Campbell. The next day, Abraham sold half of his 400 acres to James Boyd. This was on the Little Falling River, near Hat Creek, very close to the Charlotte county line. I do not think this James Boyd was the son of the William Boyd who lived on the other side of Bedford county. I have seen the sacred Egle's claim that Margaret Boyd married Alexander Culbertson but this may be in error. Others argue that Alexander married a Duncan. Once upon a time, the old 19th century histories and the vanity histories led me down the primrose path. I have spent the last 5 or 6 years trying to untangle that mess. In 1772, a Samuel Boyd arrived from Letterkenny Twp and bought land from "Alexander McConnel of! Letterkenny Township, Pa." In 1778, Samuel Boyd moved to Old 96 District in South Carolina, right on the Georgia line. Before Samuel left Virginia, he appointed John Irvin to be his attorney to sell his land in his absence. You can see much of this in the John Wright Boyd 1980 book. Samuel Boyd's land was on Cunningham Branch very near Turnip Creek. I think these are the same folks who lived in Lurgan that have transplanted to Virginia. They were all adjoining neighbors in an area that was 4 or 5 miles southwest of Shippensburg, probably very near "Culbertsons Row". Today, this area is in the Letterkenny Army Depot or "Rowe Road" on the Gazetteer. Maybe someone can add to all this. I have been wrong before. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: edwirvin Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.boyd/7207/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In my earlier posting I mentioned my theory of a link between these three families in Cumberland county, Pa. and then later in southside Virginia. Here is one of the old survey maps that you can find online at the Land Records Office Archives. It is map #A18-120. http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/di/r17-114CopiedSurveyBooks/Book A1-A89/Book A-18/Book A-18 pg 242.pdf You can see my usual suspects. In 1755, Joseph Henderson has surveyed a tract of land based on a warrant originally granted to Samuel Boyd the previous year. The neighbors are Robert Boyd, John and Christopher Irwin, John Kirkpatrick, and Nathaniel Wilson. You can see much of this in John Wright Boyd's 1980 Family History. JWB included several primary source documents showing the details on the Robert Boyd family. JWB's emphasis was the descent of Robert's youngest son, Samuel Boyd. He clearly proves the close relationship between Samuel and John Irwin in 1772 in Charlotte and Bedford county. John Irwin of Hat Creek was married to one Margaret Boyd. I believe Margaret Boyd was either a sister or an aunt to Samuel Boyd. John Wright Boyd makes a few assumptions (like we all have to do) that seem to be a little shaky to me. First, he assumed that William Egle's Notes & Queries was correct when he said Robert Boyd was a Captain in the French and Indian War and that he di! ed in about 1761. I do not believe that. I think the Capt. Boyd was more likely from one of the Octoraro settlements in either Chester or Lancaster county. But I don't want to get lost in that argument. I think the Lurgan/Letterkenny Robert Boyd may have died several years before 1761. I suspect the person who died in 1761 was the mother, NOT the father Robert. Robert Boyd died without a will and maybe it was the death of the mother that triggered the Letters of Administration naming eldest son John Boyd as Administrator. JWB included these Letters in his book. On the Appraisal it says "one note in hand for Joseph Henderson who ____?? back parts of Virginia" It is difficult to read. If you look at the above survey map, it seems to me that this is an extended family. I am working on it. As to the John Boyd who married Nancie Urie, I have never seen a primary source confirming any of that, although I have not searched very hard. Most of what I have seen is from the old 19th century "Histories". In particular, the stories told by David? who had been captured by the Indians. I usually avoid these old books like the plague. I know Northumberland county was not in existence in the 1750's. If they meant the area that was to become Northumberland, this would be the Shamokin/Sunbury area of Lancaster and this area suffered much from Indian attacks. But you certainly would not seek refuge on the west side of the Susquehanna. That would be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Mike, You have the correct Robert Boyd. Based on Ediwn's work it looks like he (or his kids) traveled south down the Shenandoah Valley to VA, NC, SC etc. You also have the correct John Boyd (wife-Nancy Urie). Agnes Jones as the second wife was a name I did not know. I'll look into that. However, you have John in the wrong place. I mentioned this before. Northumberland was not a county or liveable in 1743. It was the main residence for Indian tribes which later attacked the Cumberland/Franklin region. Not a good place to live! Nancy should also not be listed as dying in Carlisle, PA. The Indians didn't take the captive towards civilization and then kill her and the young son. They went west. Just list Nancy's homesite- Letterkenny Township, Franklin County (modern), PA. Nancy's body would have been carried back to the homesite and buried. I doubt any grave will be found. Secondly, all these "historians" are guessing at locations when they wrote these stories in the 1800's and early 1900's. I have proof. In the newspaper and PA legislature account of Nancy (Urie) Boyd's capture they detail the location. 9 miles from Shippensburg. That location is now called Roxbury, PA on your map. It is Letterkenny Township, Franklin County. It WAS Lurgan Township, Cumberland County. In fact, it sits on the county line. It's all the same. same location, same guy etc. What is different is this Robert Boyd guy. Where did he come from, and is he connected to John. It appears John and Robert are of the same age. I have also finally found the Urie family. Nancy's brothers were practically next door. They claim an origin in Aberdeen, Scotland; but can't prove emigration date or if they lived in Ulster before coming to America. I believe we are missing a big 20 year gap, in which these folks lived in Chester or Lancaster counties and moved to Cumberland when it opened up circa1730s. Mike, lastly, don't we have a bigger family for John and Nancy then Agnes?
