Some years ago I was sent his Will "The following are wills copied from ABSTRACTS OF WILLS ON FILE IN THE SURROGATE'S OFFICE, CITY OF NEW YORK. Abstracts of Wills Vol V 1754-1760, Page 219. In the name of God, Amen. I, SAMUEL BOYD, of New York, taylor, being of sound mind. "I leave to my brother, Robert Boyd, a lot of land in Ulster County, being 151 acres, commonly called by the name of Boyd's Hall. My sister, Janet Boyd, is to have a living on the place during her widowhood, till the youngest child be of age. " I leave to my brother, Nathaniel Boyd, a lot of land in Orange County, being 56 acres, commonly called by the name of Boyd's Grove, And my sister, Margaret Boyd, is to have a living on it during her widowhood, or till the youngest child is of age, I also leave him œ85. I leave to my brother, James Boyd, a lot of land, 100 acres, in Ulster County, commonly called Boyd's Folly, and my sister, Mary Boyd, is to have a living on it during her widowhood, or till the youngest child is of age. I leave to my sister, Mary Waugh, 100 acres of land in Ulster County, called by the name of Boyd's Promise, and I also further order that if her male heirs should wear out, then that 100 acres shall return to my brother, Nathaniel Boyd. I leave to my brother David and his children in Ireland œ100, and œ20 now in the hands of Mr. Jesse Craig. I leave to my honored father [not named] œ3 Stirling yearly during his life. I leave to my cousin, Robert Boyd, blacksmith, œ5, and to every brother's son that is named after me œ10. "All the rest to my brothers and sisters and their children." I make Abraham Van Gelder, cordwainer, Robert Boyd[1], blacksmith, James Boyd[2], farmer, and Nathaniel Boyd[3], farmer, executors. Dated February 7, 1757. Witnesses, Abraham Van Gelder, Edward Snape, Andrew Sloane. Proved, April 7, 1757. So do any of our New Yorker cousins know if these named land locations still there today or not. Or can their locations be found so that other Boyd can visit these locations Samuel Boyd was one of four brother – Robert Boyd, b 1703, James Boyd b 1705 and Nathaniel Boyd b 1707 – who came from near Ballyhalbert, County down on the Ards Peninsular. These four brothers MIGHT BE descendants of Colonel David Boyd, the natural son of the 5th Lord Boyd, who came to the Grey Abbey Parish in 1606 with Hugh Montgomery. I have some details of Col David’s family, but nothing as yet that makes the link between the two family in Glastry, townland. I'm a descendant of Rebecca Boyd McKaughan. My g-g-grandfather, Joab Brooks, gave sworn testimony in 1874 to her origins. (She was his g-grandmother.) Do you have official birth records for Rebecca? Or do you know anything specific about her father and her heritage other than what is available on Ancestry? I see that you have death dates for Rebecca's parents of "after 1711," which apparently indicates a birth date for Rebecca of 1711. Do you have documentation of this? Thanks much. While it is 7 months away this event, it may be a good time to ask who “plans” to attend this event in June 2014. I would be very surprised if there is any accommodation left in Stirling or Bannockburn. When I went to the Woodland Games in California in April 2012, the Wallace Tent told me that had 200 people already booked into this event. The second question is would Boyds like to be in the one hotel, town, etc. As you will recall the House of Boyd Society, will be there to represent Clan Boyd, in the Clans tent. However, I am not quite sure what other events will be on during this weekend. I have been going to Scotland since 2005, so I know a little about travelling to various Boyd sites. The focus of my research shifted to Virginia about the time of the Revolutionary War. I don't recall any Thorntons associated with my Boyds. I'm guessing your Joseph Thornton Boyd would have been born in the 1780's? Robert and Martha would have been newly married? Probably early twenties? I would check for father Robert Boyd's service in the War. And not just Pennsylvania. Try Maryland or even Virginia records. The entire area around Allegheny county was once claimed by Virginia. The entire southwest corner of Pa. was claimed by Governor Dunmore of Virginia. The early settlers often had dual deeds for both Pa. and Va. Dunmore claimed everything west of the Laurel Mountain (near Ligonier) and south of the Ohio River. That's half of Pittsburg. Sorry I'm not much help. I see on my TV News this morning that President Obama saved the turkey, so it must be Thanks Giving in the USA this Thursday. While last nights News was showing the various snow storms, so I expect that one or two of our US cousins will have had to shovel some snow this morning. So this thanks giving day, when the family meets, it may be good idea to to talk about where your Boyd families came from and to get the assistance of all members to help build your family Branch. The second thing that might also be discussed is that for mature families, with no children under 21 years old – I think they still like to get presents – the family who have male Boyd members might like to combine for Christmas to buy one of the male Boyds a 67 marker DNA test. Harriet and Colin These are the details I have on that George Boyd from W. P. Boyd book of 1912. 2/103 BOYD OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE* The origin of George Boyd would appear to be from Boston Massachusetts. There was no mention beyond this. R1 George Boyd, b 171x, d 17xx, m 21/8/1730 (Old Church records Newington), Abegail Hoyt, dau of Hoyt, of Newington, New Hampshire, bc 1710, d 8/9/1800, bu North Cemetery Portland, NH, and had issue:- She m 2ndly 17xx, Mr Peavy. [Lived: S1 George Boyd, C 23/4/1732 (Newington), d 6/10/1787 (at sea returning from England), bu , m 17xx, Jane Brewster, dau of Joseph Brewster, of Portsmouth, b 17xx, d 1800, and had issue:- [Lived: - They had five sons and five daughters. On his return passage from England to America he died on board the vessel on which he had his tombstone, which he had purchased in England with the intention of having it erected upon his family burial lot in the North Cemetery of Portland, New Hampshire, where it can be seen today (1887) with his coat-of-arms upon it. He went to England, it was thought because he had Tory proclivities at the time of the Revolutionary War. He, at that time, left his family in the old Boyd family mansion, intending to return to Portsmouth after awhile. He was the wealthiest man in Portsmouth and lived in great elegance in the grand old Boyd mansion which is still standing. T1 Mary Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, m 17xx, Joseph Champuey, son of Champuey, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- ? [Lived: ] T2 Jane Boyd, bc 1763, d 1790, m 178x, Dr. John Goddard, son of Goddard, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- ? [Lived: ] T3 Phoebe-Abigal Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, m 17xx, Captain Mackay, son of Mackay, b 17xx, d 17xx, and had issue:- ? m 2ndly 18xx, Captain Samuel Hane, son of Hane, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- ? [Lived: ] - Captain Hane built the George Woodbury house in Portland, New Hampshire. T4 Submit Boyd, bc 1775, d 1803, m 17xx, Hon. J. S. Sherburne, son of Sherburne, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- ? [Lived: ] T5 Joseph Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, aged 27 years, unmarried. [Lived: ] T6 William Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, m 17xx, Miss Martin, dau of Captain Thomas Martin, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- [Lived: ] U1 Louis Maria Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, m 18xx, George Walace, son of Walace, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had issue:- ? [Lived: ] U2 George William Boyd, b 1791 (Portsmouth, NH), d 1859 (Portland, Maine), bu Rice and Goddard family lot, South Cemetery, Portsmouth, NH, m 1831, Meriam F. Guerlain, widow of a Parisian Banker, dau of Guerlain, b 17xx, d 18xx, and had no issue:- ? [Lived: Portland, Maine ] - He was fitted for College, Exeter, New Hampshire and then graduated from Bordmans College in 1810, when he went abroad and remained a year at St. Petersburg, Russia. He returned during the war of 1812-14, enlisted in the United States Army and was made a Lieutenant of the Infantry. He also served as an aide-de-camp to General Thomas A. Smith and was also at one time Assistant Adjutant General of the 8th Military District. In 1847 he resigned from the army to engage in commerce and resided in New Orleans for a short time. He left an adopted son who bore his name and lived in Mobile, Alabama. He bequeathing to Bordman College his whole property of more than $10,000, burdened only with a small annuity to the use of his infirmed wife. This gift is called the Boyd fund. George William Boyd above, was the last one bearing the name of this Boyd family and his tombstone can be seen in the Rice and Goddard family lot in the South Cemetery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. T7 Supply Boyd, b 17xx, d 17xx, aged 14 years. [Lived: ] T8 Henry Cruger Boyd, b 17xx, d 17xx, aged 11 years. [Lived: ] T9 George Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, aged 32 years, m ? [Lived: ] T10 Pheobe Boyd, b 17xx, d 18xx, aged 17 years [Lived: ] The Rambles about Portsmouth, in two volumes, by Charles Brewster, gives quite an account of this family. [NEED TO OBTAIN CORRECT REFERENCE FOR THIS BOOK] Would this Charles Brewster be a relative of Jane Brewster, above? Source: History of the Boyd family and descendants, with historical sketches of the ancient family of Boyd's in Scotland from the year 1200, and those of Ireland from the year 1680, with records of their descendants in Kent, New Windsor, Middletown and Salem, N. Y., Boston, Mass., Northumberland County, Pa., and sketches of those from the southern and western states from 1740 to 1912. By William P. Boyd ... Rochester, N. Y., John P. Smith printing company, 1912, pp 152-155. You can see that W. P. Boyd that "his family burial lot in the North Cemetery of Portland, New Hampshire, where it can be seen today (1887) with his coat-of-arms upon it." So it would be interesting to see if there were four additional children who may have died shortly after birth. However with 3 of the last 4 children dying before they got to marrying age might suggest "all" his children are listed. So if your Boyd the ship builder had 14 children MIGHT BE BE A BROTHER to the above George Boyd of Portsmouth? W. P. Boyd only show one son for George's father George Boyd and Abigail Hoyt. So would the North Cemetery have other Boyd families buried in it that might show light on this? Hope that this will help in your research. We also know that there were quite a number of Boyd sea Captains during the 1700's, so it would not be too far for one or two to be ship builders. If I recall, New England supplied timber for ships masts.
