Well I tried the digital newspapers, and that didn't help that much. I got an article from "The Cambria Freeman" from Ebensburg, PA. I am looking for an obit for my Great Great Grandfather, William C. Boyd. I am trying to find the names of his parents. Here is the article from the newspaper I found: William Boyd an engineer on the Pennsylvania railroad was killed in a wreck at Elizabeth Furnace, about three miles below Altoona, on Wednesday morning. The unfortunate man was one of the oldest engineers on the road, and resided at Harrisburg, where he leaves a wife but no children. The no children is false, all the children had left, were married, and had moved out. If there had been no children I would not be here today. Are there any newspapers in the Harrisburg area that are still in existence today? He was born March 29, 1827 not sure if PA or DE He died May 20, 1890 just outside of Altoona as the article said. If I go looking for a death certificate do I look in Altoona, where he died or Harrisburg where he lived? Ok, so someone explain how you do this newspaper research that turned up Lauren's long lost John Boyd
Hi, I'm the one that found the information on Lauren's ancestor. I searched both the California Digital Newspaper Collection (http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc) and Elephind.com (http://www.elephind.com/), using the street address the Lauren had mentioned in her email. When you search, sometimes it helps to enter only a little bit of information in the search box (for example, Lauren said that her ancestor lived at 415 Third Avenue; I searched for 415 Third). I came up with several hits, including the article that provided the details of her ancestor's death. I then did a second search using the term "molder" and came up with a different article that actually included the ancestor's full address but which didn't appear during my first search. This second article provided the hint that the ancestor was born in Scotland. Try using different combinations of keywords. Let me know if I can be of any help. My deepest sympathy to his family. I am sure he will be greatly missed. Carol Repperger -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Bryant Reed Sent: Saturday, December 21, 2013 7:08 AM To: Boyd Family; [email protected] Subject: [BOYD] Ronald Dean Boyd obituary BOYD RONALD DEAN BOYD, born Nov. 2, 1936, to Edward P. Boyd and Thelma E. Boyd, joined his maker on Dec. 18, 2013. A devout Christian, Ronnie had no fear of crossing the River Styx, and lived his life to the fullest. Ronnie grew up in Breckenridge, TX, and attended schools in Ft. Worth, Lubbock and Plainview, TX. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1955, third in his class with letters in football and golf. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959 and a Master’s in Business Administration in 1961. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in Engineering and, while at the University, served in leadership positions as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, as well as the honorary organizations Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi. He was also elected to the Silver Spurs honorary service organization. >From 1961 to 1963, Ronnie worked for Texas Instruments’ Apparatus Division in Dallas, TX, where he served as a project engineer in the anti-submarine warfare department. He later joined a Houston investor and owner of an engineering recruitment firm named Scientific Placement, which he managed from 1963 to 1968. He next formed his own global search and recruitment firm, Ronnie Boyd & Associates, which placed engineers and professionals in the oil, gas and chemical industries in North America, the Middle East, Asia and elsewhere. Ronnie successfully owned and managed this firm from 1968 until his passing in 2013. A longtime member of the National Personnel Associates (NPA), he served at one time as the vice president and member of the Board of Directors of NPA and was one of only 15 NPA members to have achieved the organization’s Double Platinum award for his recruiting skills. Ronnie married Carole Boyd in Athens, Greece, in 1973, after which they celebrated with champagne atop the Acropolis and honeymooned in the Greek Isles. He remained married to Carole for 40 years until his passing. Ronnie enjoyed a very rewarding and adventurous life, as he pursued a wide variety of interests. He was a global traveler, an avid food and wine enthusiast, and a particularly voracious reader. He read at least one or two books per week his entire adult life, favoring military history and the classics, with authors ranging from Churchill to Cicero. Mr. Boyd was also a thoroughly devoted hunter and fisherman. Whether stalking big game on the plains of Africa, bagging driven pheasant in Europe or driven red-legged partridge in Spain, chasing quail in the South Texas brush country, or hooking speckled trout in Trinity Bay, Ronnie loved to be outdoors and appeared happiest when hunting or fishing with family and friends. Ronnie was also a very generous and religious man. For roughly 30 years, he served on the board and executive committee of the Open Door Mission of Houston, an organization devoted to helping homeless men return to society and obtain jobs. He was also a lifelong Methodist and an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, serving on a number of committees and in other leadership positions since joining St. Luke’s in 1963. He was also a forceful parent and an education enthusiast. Among other things, he instilled a rigorous reading regiment among his children at an early age, and then worked hard to provide them with the absolute best education possible, regardless of costs. Given his many and varied talents, there were a number of other terms used to describe Ronnie during his storied life, including master joke teller, accomplished pen sketcher, amateur author, art lover, weekend farmer, downhill skier, master liar’s dice player and others. Ronnie is survived by his wife, Carole Boyd; daughter in Seattle, WA, Lesli Berggren and twin grandchildren, Nils and Claire Berggren; son in Washington, D.C., R. Dean Boyd Jr., and wife, Valerie Boyd, and grandchildren Lila and Scarlett Boyd; son in Austin, TX, Lee Boyd, and wife, Holley Boyd, and grandchildren Carter and Cameron Boyd; and daughter in Houston, TX, Donya Davis, and grandchildren, Alexandra and Austin Jones. The funeral is to be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, TX, on Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 at 2PM in the Chapel. The honorary pallbearers are Rob Levy, Jack McCrary, San Hemwattakit, Mac Thompson, John Whitehouse, Ed Randall Sr. and Tom Hail. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 3471 Westheimer, Houston, TX 77027. BOYD RONALD DEAN BOYD, born Nov. Sent from my iPad Best Regards, Bryant Reed La Porte, TX USA

Colin The book says in "the town of York, in York County" I know that York County, MA became Maine. However, I have found that our American cousins like to change the names of towns and counties. So I do not know the modern name of this town. The text seems to be talking about 1720's, so perhaps some of our New England cousins might know what York Town of 1720 is now called and I assume it is not now in York County, Maine. In the book Saco Valley Settlements and Families by G. T. Ridlon, Portland, 1895, on page 933, it outlines some of the thirteen children of David Merrifield and Dorcas Boston of Wells, Maine. David was the son of Sarah Boyd of Berwick Maine and John Merrifield who had they settled in the west part of Berwick, not far from the "Tatnick" neighborhood after they were married in 1765. Can any of our New England cousins, on their next visit to their local Library, look to see if Mr Ridlon’s book is there and also see if there is any other mention of Boyd families in this book. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
>From the book Boyd family, by Arthur S. Boyd, jr. 1924, it mentions this William Boyd who was born in the 1720’s to James Boyd and Mary/Margaret Whitten Tradition says that William was a Captain, that he was wounded, and that after the War he settled in or near Wiscasset, Me., and was ancestor of all the Boyds through that section, Wiscasset, Bristol, Boothbay, etc., but I have no definite record further, although there is a Wiscasset family of Boyds descended from a William Boyd.” I also noticed that the author included “BOOTHBAY, MAINE” in this list of locations that this family might be found in Maine. I have outlined separate information that three brother came to Boothbay in about 1750 from the townland of Bushfoot which is on the west bank of the Bush River and about a km or two down stream toward the coast from Bushmills in northern County Antrim. Two of these brothers also seem to have settled in Bristol Maine. So HAS THE AUTHOR CONFUSED THESE TWO FAMILIES of Berwick and Boothbay, Maine OR DOE SIT MEAN THAT TH THREE BROTHERS THAT CAME IN 1720’S MIGHT HAVE BEEN A GENERATION OR TWO EARLIER of this family from Bushfoot, Bushmills. For our golfing friends, Bushfoot is now a golf course. So do any of list have any connection to Wiscasset, Bristol, Boothbay, Maine and can you link back to this William Boyd? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
List In this website, David Hancock says that Sir John Boyd's father Augustus Boyd came from County Donegal. While there were several Boyd families in County Donegal, the main one being the Boyds of Ballymacool, Letterkenny, County Donegal, I DO NOT BELIEVE that Augustus Boyd is part of this family. With Augustus Boyd (1679–1765) being born in 1679, would suggest he was born in France and not Donegal, Ireland. That in the 1680's Augustus Parents and three other siblings have gone to Charleston, SC. Sorry, I can't recall when in the early 1700's he might have gone to Dublin. Thank you Barry This family of Danson Hill, is part of an French Huguenot family from La Rochelle, France who were involved with sugar refining in the 1600's. They (some of the children) then went to Charleston, SC in about 1685 and were give grants of land and took place in SC Government of this period In the early 1700's the family moved to Dublin Ireland before moving to London, England. Professor David Hancock in an earlier book, when he was at Harvard University, said incorrectly that the Danson Hill Family came form the first Earl of Kilmarnock, William Boyd, son Alexander Boyd. However that is incorrect, and it is more likely that this family is a branch of the Boyds of Portincross, Ayrshire.
