Thank you Dick. I suspected that these 6 people MIGHT HAVE BEEN part of the Boyd of Ballymacool, Letterkenny, County Donegal, but when I searched that Family Chapter, I could not find any possible links. These Boyd fled Letterkenny before the Siege and put their records in the Church at Raphoe and then went to Londonderry City. King James's men burnt the Raphoe Church and these Boyd's records. By 1689, there were Boyd families in Londonderry City and quite a number of families in an around Coleraine from which these 6 might stem from. >From where was Colonel Michelburn's Regiment recruited? That may give a guide as to where these 6 Boyd's came from. There were three brothers, James Boyd, bc 1700, William Boyd and John Boyd (younger brothers) who came to New England in about 1720. In two books on brothers James Boyd and John Boyd, they claim that their father was a Captain James Boyd. While below, we have a Captain James Boyd who was killed in Londonderry City in 5 July 1689. So could HE BE THE FATHER OF THESE THREE SONS? If that was the case they would be a lot older than estimated in these books. Or are we looking for a second Captain James Boyd? Francis Boyd of Michelburn's Regiment. 2. Capt. James Boyd, defender. A bomb fell on his house (probably the families residence for many generations in Shipquay St.) on the night of 5th June "killing him .. but several officers, who were then at dinner, escaped the danger." >From The Boyd family, by Arthur S. Boyd, jr. 1924 book, page 23, it says “Who Captain James married is not known, but he had at least three sons: James (2) William (3), and John (4).” Arthur Boyd, deals with the family of the son James Boyd and only mentions that James had the two brothers, William of Rhode Island and John of Boston, MA. While Richard G. Boyd of Mt Morris, MI in his book A History of the Boyd Family, 1993, outlines the family of “A” John Boyd – whom I think claims is the son of a Captain James Boyd. However, if I recall correctly, there is no proof or data that shows that the Arthur Boyd’s John Boyd is the same person as Richard Boyd’s John Boyd. But I do accept that we have a John Boyd, who married Margaret Long and lived in Shelburne Falls, Franklin County, MA, family whose father is most likely to be a James Boyd. Both books CLAIM that the father of these three sons, was a Captain James Boyd of Ireland who was the first Earl of Kilmarnock, William Boyd’s son. It is known that the Earl’s son James Boyd, was buried in May 1702 at Old Lenzie Church in East Dumbartonshire. However, in the invitation to his funeral, there was no mention of “a wife or children”. Arthur Boyd only provides this information on the birth of the three sons:- “2. JAMES BOYD, son of James Boyd (1), was born in Ireland about 1700, as he came to America with his brothers William and John about 1720.” This birth date for James Boyd, the son, is the date given for the three sons in this book by Arthur Boyd. If I recall, from previous posting to the Boyd Net site the dates often used for these three brothers is:- James Boyd, born about 1700; William Boyd, born about 1703; John Boyd, born about 1705. Do any members have any further details on these three brothers? While data for the James Boyd’s children is also a little thin to see the children were born in Ireland or the New England area. Hopefully, the male Boyd’s in both the family of James Boyd of Berwick, Maine and John Boyd of Shelburne Falls, Franklin Co., MA will have undertaken their DNA test to the 67 marker level to be able to say if the two family are ACTUALLY brothers as suggested by these two books. Mike, they sent you to the wrong part of the state! Houston has a very large genealogical collection, spanning two buildings. One entire building is devoted to family genealogies, while the other, much larger, building has everything else. Patricia In a message dated 1/7/2014 7:16:06 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: In 2012, when Barry took me to the Dallas Public Library they proudly told me there were the 8th largest genealogical Library in the USA (I was very disappointed, as I had been told that everything in the Great State of Texas was larger than any where else in the USA.)
People When you are researching your own family start off at your local public Library and/or your local Family History Society. Either Library will help you to "fill" out your initial direct tree. They may be able to help with Census records, your local County records, County histories or other forms of information including using their PC to search out of your area or websites like Ancestry. They may also be able find a list of reference for you that you may not have been aware of. (Members will be aware that I sent 3 or 4 pages of books on various Boyd families, so last year when I went to the USA, I was determined that I would go to the Allan County Public Library that a number of people had told me was a must visit place. I thought that I would be good and do my homework before I left Australia, just in case I might have been able to pick one of two new books on Boyd families that I did not have on "my book list". To my surprise, they sent me two websites. One had 126 books on Boyd families - most of whom I had not known about and a second list of about 800 references) Your second step will be going to your own County Library, to see what additional information they might be able to add to your own particular family. Your third step is to perhaps go to your State Library. So this will be to case if your family has been in the same area for some period. However, if you your family that have moved through several states, you might have to ASK MEMBERS OF THE BOYD LIST IF THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO A LOOK UP FOR YOU to help overcome your individual Boyd families brick wall. SO REMEMBERS TO VOLUNTEER TO HELP YOUR FELLOW LIST MEMBERS WHEN THEY POST THEIR BRICK WALL TO THE LIST. >From my various trips to Northern Ireland, I am aware that a number of Boyd’s were Officers for the defenders of Londonderry City during the siege and some of these were Captains One Boyd Officer was killed in his house – in the street that ran down to the Gate at the River’s edge. Can anyone on either list know any of these Boyd Officers? >From "The Boyd family", by Arthur S. Boyd, jr. 1924 book, page 23, it says “Who Captain James married is not known, but he had at least three sons: James (2) William (3), and John 4.” Arthur Boyd, deals with the family of the son James Boyd and only mentions that James had the two brothers, William of RI and John of Boston. But I do accept that we have a John Boyd, who married Margaret Long and lived in Shelburne Falls, Franklin County, MA, family whose father is most likely to be a James Boyd Both books CLAIM that the father of these three sons, was a Captain James Boyd of Ireland who was the first Earl of Kilmarnock, William Boyd’s son. It is known that the Earl’s son James Boyd, was buried in May 1702 at Old Lenzie Church in East Dumbartonshire. However, in the invitation to his funeral, there was no mention of “a wife or children”. While I agree that the father of these three sons IS MOST LIKELY “A JAMES BOYD” and perhaps even a Captain James Boyd, I THINK that he may therefore have served during the Siege of Londonderry City, rather than be the Earl’s son. So this is the area we need to explore to see if there were any Captain James Boyd’s who might have served in Londonderry City during the Siege and therefore might might be the father of these two families outlined in these publications . Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
While Patricia has sent this to me privately, I am replying to the whole list, as it brings up the specific issue of “ALL” of us can help someone else with information from their local library. In this case Patricia lives in California, but the information she needs is in New England. So hopefully – when the snow clears – that someone from the list, and area, can volunteer to do the necessary look up in Shelburne, Massachusetts for Patricia. So while working on your own Boyd Branch, keep an eye open for other Boyd families. When you find them and determine that they are not part of your family, do not throw away the information, but post to the list that you have found another Boyd families, with brief details on this particular Boyd family and the full reference title of the publication. This same publication could be in a library much closer to where members of the new Boyd live and members of that family may not be aware that anyone has already published something on their family. So get into the habit of helping others with their research, as they might find the piece of information that will brake down your brick wall. Thank you. Mike, I have Capt, James, born about 1660--1670, married Louisa Johanna Graham, died 1704. Their son John was born about 1704, Tyrone, Ireland, married Margaret (Ginny) Long 11 April 1731 in Boston, MA. John died about June 1789, Shelburne Falls, Franklin Co., MA. Then I have John Jr, Robert, Pliny, Robert, and Gertrude Sarah Boyd (1868 -- 1947). She was one of 3 daughters, and the only one who married. The Shelburne Public Library has a large book on the Boyd Family with multiple generations included. The day I visited it was nearly closing time, and I have not been able to get back. Naturally the librarians are less than helpful.... The distance is about 2000 miles, so that doesn't help either. Patricia

Mike and cousins, On this subject I would like to make myself available to look-up stuff for people here in the Dallas Library. I work, so I can do look-ups on Thursday nights when they are open late. Librarians are priceless, and can greatly assist us, specially if you let them know in advance what you are searching for, they can pull it for us. Yes I suspect he has Scottish ancestory, even though he is playing cricket in England.
