Hi Lauren, I served in the NH Legislature and as president of our local historical society which has preserved a lot of documents. I don't know how dark her documents are but if they were bought from a state archives they might replace them for her. When our archivist met with us in committee he told us that computer disks after about ten years get a mold and can't be used plus the change sin the computer programs sometimes won't read the disk, so to store all documentation on acid free paper and don't put anything in plastic sleeves. If I were Phyllis I would call her state archivist and discuss the problem or even the library. We have a company in Maine that has done some saving of old records and then there's a really good company in Essex, VT and they have saved old scrap books that had stuff glued or scotch taped in and turned brittle and orange brown. Hope this helps. Harriet in NH On Wednesday, January 15, 2014 11:54 PM, Kathy Manning <[email protected]> wrote: University Products is the company I use for archival paper. In a message dated 1/15/2014 7:36:09 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I didn't know the difference between acid free paper and Archival paper. Phyllis, acid-free is the same as archival paper. Most paper sold for printers or copiers is made using acid, because it is faster and easier. A local place that makes wedding invitations, and so on, can get acid-free paper for you, or you could look in your local phone book for "printer supply" establishments. I would expect that Hartford, New Haven and New London would have such stores. Patricia
Mike and Phyllis, It might be a good idea to get an inexpensive digital camera, and a large external hard drive, then "copy" everything that is still a bit legible with the camera, storing the images on the hard drive. A lot of photos can be taken each hour, to the point where it is often faster to take the photos than load up a copier with pages to be copied and paper to reprint them on. Even though the paper today will copy better than 30 to 40 years ago, most printer / copier paper is still not of archival quality. Once as many pages are photographed as possible, then you can go back and get new versions of the missing pages. Patricia In a message dated 1/15/2014 6:14:27 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: This will be a problem for quite a number of researchers who copied material in the 1970's and 1980's. When I found that out about 20 years ago, I recopied these pages through a normal photocopier, which seems to work. So are there anyone out there who can provide advise on who best to store the data that we each collect. Phyllis, you MAY BE ABLE to copy these pages with a normal copier, but use the light exposure. Thank you Mike. The census forms are too dark to copy, so I will have to go back into the census forms and recopy them. Lauren has helped me quite a bit. I didn't know the difference between acid free paper and Archival paper. I do appreciate your help and that of any more of our Boyd cousins. Thank you again. The Arms Library is a bust. No Boyd family books. Local records (which I made copies) are limited to the Falls region apparently so it didn't cover much Boyd info. Pam mentioned NEHGS and they are better for MA vital records. Town and County histories mention John Boyd as an original settler but nothing on his family is given. Apparently, they were gone by the time historians started to write the local histories. As noted, only one was open, and I couldn't stay overnight. The Arms "librarian" did say the "other libray has a better organized genealogy/history section. So maybe all is not lost. While doing some other work I came across this IGI entry James BOYD (M)............. B: 1705 B: 26 Apr 1930 SLAKE F#: 183531 @ Rel: Samuel M. BOYD , Down, Ireland E: Pre-1970 P#: 703 (no parents listed) SP: Pre-1970 O#: 24091 Are there any Boyds on this list that live in Salt Lake City that could make an inquiry at the LDS Church Library? Or is there someone who will be visiting Salt Lake City “shortly” who may have time to look up the research papers the Library has for Samuel M Boyd? Thank you Mike Boyd # 423
Patricia Would an Email to this Library help to process this search? If that fails do you either ask your local Library if they can help search the Shelburne Arms Library list of books? Mike Boyd -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Monday, January 13, 2014 5:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BOYD] Helping other Boyds with research - Shelburne Falls,MA Library Looking at their webpage, it appears that I had visited the Shelburne Arms Library and the location matches. The photo on the Free Library webpage does not match my memory at all. Trying to do a search on their catalog has so far been useless, but I am not ready to call it quits. Patricia
In a recent Email I was asked the question “anyone knows how to successfully glue the top of Robert, Jr's sandstone tombstone, I would be happy to do that. ,a super glue, will not do it. “ Has anyone had any experience with restoring a sandstone tombstone? My very limited building experience would suggest a “cement” of some kind. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, hBS
In a message dated 1/13/2014 4:12:19 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Would an Email to this Library help to process this search? In the past year or so I have sent several emails, and made some phone calls, each time to only be told that they no longer had the staff to help, blah, blah, blah. If that fails do you either ask your local Library if they can help search the Shelburne Arms Library list of books? The local library here has also gotten the same reply, so I am thinking that Springfield might be the next place to check. This evening I have been looking at the NEHGS website, primarily at the Births, Marriages, and Deaths in Shelburne for Boyds as contained in the books of vital records for events which occurred in 1850 or earlier, There were 26 which occurred 1620 to 1801, and 49 between 1620 and 1851. The fathers for the births prior to 1801 were David, John, Samuel and Thomas. The same four names were repeated in the group prior to 1851, without any additional given names. It would seem logical that some of the fathers in the second group were among the sons in the first group. So there was John, but no James nor William as fathers. There did not appear to be any James' or Williams as sons either. This has been interesting, but it seems to disprove Captain James as the father of John Senior. Now I need to start over to try to determine John's parents. At least there is quite a bit more available online, with primary records made more obvious. <Grin> Patricia

I believe Montgomery Co. MD; Washington and Frederick Co., MD was taken from Prince George's Co. in 1776. Why it is so hard searching records. Some Boyds I am sure got lands after serving in Revolutionary War and may be why they moved into a Wilderness as I would call it. Travelling 20 miles to a Court house from Browntown area, VA to Woodstock Va Court House. Front Royal, Warren County, VA didn't exist until 1836 when it was formed from parts of Frederick Co., VA, Shenandoah Co. VA., and then they had a Court House. Hope this is helpful. Ruth "Louise" Henry
In 1989 i corresponded with the Archivist at Montgomery Co. Historical Society in Montgomery Co., MD. AT the time I was also looking for my gggrandfather John Jennings who married Ruth Boyd. The Archarist informed me that Susanna Boyd lived next door to John Jennings. I found Susanna also on 1790 and1800 MD Census. The area she said was where the present day "Manor Country Club"is.This is located near Rt 28 and Norbeck Rd. near Rockville, MD. I visited there about 10 years ago and tried to find a cemetery on the property as the Archivist said they would have been buried on their property. ( Could be possible someone would know this info, but I couldn't find it.) Seems likely that the John Boyd of Montgomery County may live on area of the land mentioned by Barry Boyd and part of Amphill Grange. Also the John Boyd of Shenandoah Co., now Warren Co., lived just a mile from the Jennings family and cemetery at Browntown,VA. Did I send you photos of the cemetery at Browntown,VA that I took from the road and also the old Boyd home. (They had two). Also sons in Civil War. I have some other info on this and will try to get it to you soon. Best Regards, Ruth "Louise" Henry
In the UL you cannot touch headstones without consulting a stone mason or cemetery supervisors. The reason is if the stone falls over and injures someone as a result of your DIY them you are liable. I would advise against doing this yourself. Gorilla Glue was invented for the purpose of gluing stones. It works great with limestone and sandstone. Consider using some sort of dowel if there is room to drill a small (rebar size) hole in each side. wet both sides with water. completely cover one side with the glue, use weight or clamps to hold pieces together while the glue sets. after 24 hours you can scrape away the foam residue that seeps out. The traditional method would be as above but using a morter with an adhesive agent. Gorilla glue works. I can't seem to find any further information on James D Boyd who was born (some sources say 1816, others 1820) in Ohio County, Ky. He died in McLean County, Ky in 1845. He was married to Senora Sharp and they had two sons, John W and James. Senora was married a total of 4 times and she is buried, I believe in the old Bells Run Cemetery. James and Senora were my great great great grandparents. Any information would be appreciated. Mark Boyd
Mike, The original question was "where was John Boyd buried?" That I do not know. But "where was the land?" This 1000 acre tract called Amphill (sometimes Ampthill) Grange was originally (1650) on land in Charles County Maryland. It then became Petuxent County in 1654 under the care of Lord Baltimore and then became Calvert County in 1658, and this is the period of the land grant to John Boyd (1683). Shortly thereafter (1696), it became Prince George's County this was the period of the will dated Oct 5 1704. 1743 added the estate called Castle Plains to the holdings of John Boyd's son John and his wife Eleanor. Prince Georges County was divided further in 1748 and it is here where we find the young George Washington as an apprentice surveyor I have a link to that somewhere in this archive. Today these estates are underneath the suburban sprawl that is Washington DC. This comes from: "Sidelights on Maryland History with sketches of early settlers Vol 2" by Hester Dorsey Richardson. http://books.google.com/books?id=kb4-AAAAYAAJ&pg=PA271&lpg=PA271&dq=Boyd+Castle+Plains+prince+George%27s+county+Maryland&source=bl&ots=rIQiuzOIrc&sig=I2nxQhyABNwzGdhUfWqKikCddYM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wwTUUq-GNuehsASA2YHYDA&ved=0CFQQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=Boyd%20Castle%20Plains%20prince%20George%27s%20county%20Maryland&f=false Of the families settled at New Scotland, Prince George's County, Maryland, none were more interesting or contributed more to the revolutionary history of the State than the Boyd family, of whom John Boyde was the early progenitor. Settling first in Anne Arundel County where, on February 26, 1683, he received the first warrant for land, he soon removed to Prince George's County, and settled on his estate Amptill Grange, a tract of nearly a thousand acres granted to him by Charles, third Lord Baltimore, September 16, 1703. This land was included in the original boundaries of Calvert County, in that part afterwards included in Prince George's. John Boyd was a prominent man in his day, and while not having held public office, was called upon to discharge duties involving grave responsibility, as per following: Council of Maryland. Maryland Archives, vol. 23, folios 327-328) "At a Court held for Prince Georges County before his Majesties Justices and Commissioners of the County aforesaid the 24th day of November, 1697, the Grand Jury made the following report: "We the Jurors for the body of Prince Georges County, having had it in charge from the Worshipfull Court to inquire and make report to this Court what measures would most conduce to his Majesties Honor and Service and the Interest & Safety of this Province to be now taken in relation to the forte at New Scotland and the defence and security of this Province and the good people thereof upon the frontier Plantations against any Incursions of Indians, et cetera." The jury felt it to be necessary to the interest and safety of the Province that the Garrison at the falls of the Potomac be maintained and the same number of Rangers be kept out on guard at the fort and also on the frontier. The jury also recommended that a fort be built on the hill above the new fort, etc. The jury consisted of twenty-four prominent gentlemen of Prince George's County among whom were *JOHN BOYD, Edward Dawson, Francis Frisby,* *John Sprigg, Archibald Edmondston *and *Tomas Keniston.* John Boyd's will, dated October 5, 1704, was proved July 9, 1705, and is recorded in Liber 3, folio 635, Annapolis Wills. In this he is called John Boyd of Prince George's County. The provisions of the will are as follows: "To wife *Mary Boyd* the home plantation called Amphill Grange, In Prince George's County, during her natural life. "To eldest son *Charles Boyd *150 acres of land part of 'Amphill Grange' failing heirs of his body to son John Boyd, second son. Also to *John Boyd,* Second son, 100 acres part of 'Amphill Grange',--failing heirs of his body the land to go to the next heir of the Testator. "To third son *Abraham Boyd* 100 acres part of 'Amphill Grange',--failing heirs of his body the land to go to the next heir of the Testator. "To fourth son *Isaac Boyd *100 acres part of 'Amphill Grange',--reversion to next heir of the Testator. "To dau. *Mary Boyd Bateman* wife of *Ishmaell Bateman* 100 acres part of 'Amphill Grange'. "To dau. *Martha Boyd *100 acres part of 'Amphill Grange'. In the event of her death two sons John and Abraham Boyd to act as executors. Wife Mary Boyd Executrix." In the will of Mary, wife of John Boyd, proved in the year 1722, it is shown that their daughter* Martha* married* Thomas Wells.* The high social status of the family is proven by the intermarriages of the sons and daughter of John Boyd. Of these John Boyd married Elinor FitzRedmond, niece of Charles Carroll, first of the Carrolls of Carrollton in Maryland, the marriage being recorded in All Hallows Parish Register, Anne Arundel County, page 72, dated March 28, 1706. The proof of the relationship is to be found in his will, dated December 1, 1718, proved July 28, 1720 (Annapolis Wills, Liber 16, folio 176) ..... The following is also on interest in this connection: (Provincial Court Records. Liber P.L. No. 6, flio 426, June 10, 1730) "This indenture made the tenth day of June anno domini one thousand seven hundred and thirty between Margaret Macnemarra of the City of Annapolis, in Anne Arundel County, Relict of Thomas Macnemarra, Esq., of the said place, deceased, of the first part, JOHN BOYD, of Queen Anne's Town in Prince George's County and ELINOR his wife of the second part ....." John Boyd, husband of *Elinor FitzRedmond*, who had inherited the part of Amphill Grange from his father, was in the year 1743 granted by Lord Baltimore an estate known as Castle Plains, adjoining the land called "The Forest of Needwood", now in Frederick County, close to Washington County border. The death of John Boyd, the second, is proven in a deed dated January 30, 1756, Prince George's County, Maryland, in which Benjamin Boyd, of Prince George's County, "for natural love and affection" gives to his son, Thomas Boyd, a tract of land containing 100 acres being part of Amphill Grange and that part whereon John Boyd "my father deceased" dwelt. The children of John and Elinor Boyd are proven by the record of their births in Queen Anne's Parish Register, Prince George's County, on page 302. Benjamin Boyd, born January 13, 1706; John Boyd born September 25, 1709; Abraham Boyd born June 5, 1713; William Boyd born April 19, 1716; Elinor Boyd born June 12, 1720. All of these sons married--Benjamin to Elizabeth Harwood on October 30, 1733; John to Susanna Baldwin May 8, 1735; William Boyd to Charity Talbott; of Elinor Boyd there is no further record. The descendants of Benjamin Boyd and Elizabeth Harwood have become prominent in public affairs in various parts of the country. Thomas Boyd married Charity Duckett and Miss Lansdale. He was Lieutenant and Adjutant in the Maryland Line and a charter member of the Maryland Society of the Cincinnati. His son, Thomas Duckett Boyd, removed to Albemarle County, Virginia, and married Mary Magruder of the Maryland family, and have many descendants. William Boyd and Charity Talbott, his wife, lived in Washington County, at the time of his death. His estate of Castle Plains adjoining Needwood Forest being located in that part of Maryland. Among other children, William Boyd had sons, William Boyd, Jr., and Walter Boyd, to whom on September 25, 1782, a power of attorney was sent by "Captain Benj. Price, Captain of the Maryland Line, now serving in the State of South Carolina, to be my true and lawful attorneys for me and in my name and my use to ask, demand, sue for and recover and receive for me from all persons whatsoever due in the State aforesaid. (Signed) Benjamin Price." The Boyds who descended from John Boyd the first, of Prince George's County became very numerous in the third and fourth generations. They occupied lands in the home country and in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, and perhaps other counties in Maryland. They settled in the south and west and did great credit to their Maryland blood by achieving honorable careers in the higher walks of life. They were patriotic during the American Revolution, serving as officers and privates in the armies that fought in that momentous struggle, counting it not too great a sacrificewer Battalion of Prince George's County in 1778 appear the names of Abraham Boyd, lieutenatnt-colonel and Thomas Boyd, Ensign (MS. Revolutionary Muster Rolls of Prince George's County in 1778). These men were brothers, sons of Benjamin Boyd, and nephews of William Boyd of Washington County ..... The following is from Revolutionary Muster Rolls of Maryland, volume 18 of the Maryland Archives: Benjamin Boyd, sergeant, May, 1778, and November, 1780 (p. 86). Benjamin Boyd, private in active service in 1780-81-83 (p. 431). Thomas Boyd, private in the 5th Regiment (Southern Maryland boys) January 1, 1781 (p. 364).
