Oops, my bad. I drive there from Shamokin, Northumberland County and keep forgetting I cross county boundaries. If you read the Northumberland County History from the 1800's there is much written of this John Boyd family. I wonder what Montour County has in their "history"? Danville was in Northumberland County until 1813 when it became part of Columbia County that was created out of Northumberland County. In 1850 Montour was founded and split off from Columbia County. This Danville is in Montour county PA. The historical society is located in Montgomery house. Gearhart collection at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, I found some pages, which included the family of John Cowen Boyd who was born in 1793 in Chester County, PA and died 18 August 1849 at Boyd’s Station in Northumberland County, PA. He married Hannah Montgomery, daughter of General Daniel Montgomery and had seven children. John Boyd was the son of General John Boyd. I know that over recent years on the Boyd list, there have been a number of Emails on a “John C. Boyd”. However, I am not sure if this John Cowen Boyd is the same person being referred to? It goes onto say that John removed from Chester County and located in Danville in 1820. It then adds, “Miss Helen Wallace, 203 Pine St., Harrisburg, PA is publishing a book about the Boyd family.” I have not seen any such book by Miss Wallace on any list of books on Boyd families that I have been able to find. This Gearhart collection would have taken place in the 1930’s Do any members know if Miss Wallace actually published her book? And what was its title, etc? Are any of our members able to search any of the Harrisburg, PA Library’s Indexes to see if to she did publish? Or can some of the local Harrisburger’s check on their next visit to the public Library or the “Harrisburg local History society” may have any of her papers. Hopefully this will allow some members to find additional information on this Boyd family. This is the same William Boyd who Diane Graham wrote about yesterday. She has been researching this part of her family for many years. I have copied a sheet of paper on the family of William Boyd (b 1731 and who may have died in 1821 or 1832. He married Sarah Johnson in 1757. The sheet said that he died in Waterford, PA. This form the source “Revolutionary Soldiers of Erie County, p 12” would suggest that Waterford is in Erie County, PA. It also mentions that “William Boyd probably lived in Paxtang and Northumberland county.” “Paxtang” PA, also seems to have had quite a number of Boyd families. I have just gone to my PA map but can’t find it listed. I think that it is in the old Lancaster County area, so can someone tell me where it is today please. In an Email from Kevin Marie Kraaz to the Boyd net list on 30 July 2001 we have this message about this family which appears to have settled in Cecil County, Maryland (which is on the MD/PA border in NE Maryland.) Her Email in 2001 was <[email protected]> but I have just tried that Email and it has bounced. Kevin are you still on this list? If this statement that William Boyd was born in Cecil County, Maryland and not Ireland, it will open a possible link to the Boyds of Herring Bay who came to MD in 1670. This William Boyd is also in the DAR Index “William: b 10-8-1731 IR d 4-2-1821 PA m Sarah Johnson PS DE “ So perhaps some of our DAR members may be able to proved some current DAR members who belong to this family. Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee, HBS
During my visit to Pennsylvania and to Philadelphia in June 2013, I visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and found a Boyd folder (of 50 pages) amongst the Herbert G. Gearhart Collection. One of these pages was a file note on the visit of Mrs Frances Elliott Clark of Camden, NJ, who visited Mr Gearhart in November 1931 She was looking for information on a Thomas Smiley of Venango county, PA. However, it did not say if this was the eldest son of Rhoda Boyd and Robert Smiley. But she did say that the Smiley family were connected to the Boyd family and mentions “near Shippensburg”. The notes then said – “She says that Rev Boyd of Paxtang was descended from the Boyd family which came into Pennsylvania by way of Wyoming (County). They are descended from the Boyds who came to New England in 1719.” I am uncertain if this “Rev Boyd of Paxtang” is part of the Boyds of Shippensburg, PA or if he is from another Boyd branch. I recall Colin Brooks mentioning about 10 Boyd families came on this 1718 migration, but not their first names. So perhaps as part of his 1718 Project he may have some idea if this statement is valid or not. I do know that in New England in about 1722 there was a problem with Indians, so this may have caused some of these Boyd from the 1718 migration to “move south.” Are there any members of Mrs Clark’s family out there? Or are there any members who lived near Camden, NJ, who could check with the various Libraries if Mrs Clark left her family tree papers with them. Mike, would you please share with me the 3 page document re: William and Thomas Boyd from Armagh to New Garden Township Pa. This story is very close to mine....(.Brothers William and Thomas from Armagh to Pa. sisters mentioned etc). ============== In the year 1782 came William Boyd and Thomas Boyd from the county of Armagh, in Ireland, and with them two unmarried sisters, one of whom married a Mr. Dobbins and the other a Mr. Curry, all of Philadelphia. They also left one married sister in Ireland, who with her husband afterwards emigrated to Philadelphia. Thomas Boyd settled in the forks of Delaware, but afterwards removed to Philadelphia, where he died in 1782, leaving four sons and one daughter: Maj. Alexander Boyd (the oldest son), James Boyd, Thomas Boyd, and Andrew Boyd, all officers in the Revolutionary army, serving through the war. Some time after the war, James and Thomas settled in Kittanning. Of their families nothing is known. The other children remained in Philadelphia and died there. ================================ (1) "Notes and Queries, Historical and Genealogical, Chiefly Relating to Interior Pennsylv ania," ed. During my visit to Pennsylvania and to Philadelphia in June 2013, I visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and found a Boyd folder (of 50 pages) amongst the Herbert G. Gearhart Collection. This work appears to be dated 1934. In a three page document it says – “William Boyd and his brother Thomas left Armagh*, Ireland, came to America in 1732, and located in New Garden, Twp., Chester Co.” * I assume that “Armagh” means the County of Armagh rather than the town of Armagh? The name “New Garden” is familiar to me as being the place where the Quaker family of John Boyd and Janes Bell. They were married on 20 November 1707 at the Quaker Church, Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland. John Boyd produced a certificate dated 10 February 1736, for himself, wife Jane and children, from Ballynacree Monthly Meeting of Friends near Ballymoney, Antrim county, Province of Ulster, Ireland, to New Garden Monthly Meeting, Chester county, Pa 26 December 1736-7. They became members of Sadsbury Meeting. At Warrington Monthly Meeting, York county, Pa., 9 November 1765, a certificate dated 21 August 1765, from Sadsbury Monthly Meeting was recieved for John Boyd and wife. John Boyd, of Warrington township, York county made his will 8 August 1770 and it was probated 31 October 1777. I do not know when John and Jane Boyd went from Lurgan. County Armagh, to Ballymoney, County Antrim. There is no indication if these brothers, William and Thomas Boyd, were also Quakers or not, when they arrived New Garden, but a number of the next generation appear to be officers, with some being listed in the 1990 DAR Patriot Index. So if they were Quakers in 1732, they may have left the Church some time later. William Boyd is given as dying on 17 April 1767, in Chester Co., PA and being buried with his wife at Fagg’s Manor. While Thomas Boyd is said to have died in 1782 in Philadelphia, PA, but he had lived in “the Forks of Delaware” and then removed to Philadelphia. So are the brothers William and Thomas Boyd and the sisters Mrs Dobbins and Mrs Curry, related to John Boyd, who married Jane Bell? From the dates this John Boyd MIGHT BE an uncle, if there is a relationship. DNA testing may show if THIS THEORY OF MINE, if there is a possible link between these families. During my visit to Pennsylvania, USA in June 2013, Colin Brooks of Quakertown, PA took me to Northampton County, the Lehigh Valley and to the Craig or Irish Settlement area. He also pointed out the gap in the hills that the Indians from the north came down into that part of Pennsylvania. One of the items he told me was that a Mrs Dobbins, the sister of William Boyd (1709-1767) and Thomas Boyd (1713-1782) had a 200 acre (or so) farm next to John Boyd who was the elder brother of Rev Adam Boyd of Upper Octorara, Chester County. For quite some time we discussed which Boyd family Mrs Dobbins might have come from. But could not make a connection to any of the Boyd families we were familiar with. However, we did “agree” that as this Mrs Dobbins had the farm next to John Boyd, that she “must be” close relative of John Boyd and Rev Adam Boyd, but had no idea what this relationship might have been. This family tree shows that Mrs Dobbins, was born in 1707 and had a sister, born about 1711 who married a Mr Curry and that the “family” of three sons and three daughters came to America in 1732 from County Armagh, but no town within County Armagh is given. This would also suggest the sisters might have been married in County Armagh, given their age, and MIGHT HAVE COME WITH THEIR UNKNOWN PARENTS Do any members know of Mrs Dobbin’s origins, family and descendants? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
Thank you all. Yes I have found it and in the process leant that the map Index does not show all the "towns" in PA in the Index I assume that Rte 41 took early settlers from New Castle Deleaware into Lancaster County, PA. In 1743 a red brick addition was added to the south end of the building, followed by a north end enlargement in 1790. A large burial ground is laid out to the south of the meeting house. The burial ground for the Orthodox branch is located on the eastern side of Newark Road just above the intersection with Rte 41 (Gap Newport Pike). Charlene in PA Does anyone know where the “New Garden” meetinghouse was located within Chester County. I have a road map, so if you can give me directions and distance from a town that would be helpful. During my trip to the USA in June 2013, I visited the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and found this direct Boyd tree:- 1. Moses Boyd, m ???; 2. Sarah Boyd, m Adam Black; 3. James Black, m Jane Lindsay; 4. Margaret Black, m John Crawford; 5. Martha Lindsay Crawford, m Henry Clay Greenewalt; 6. Frank Lindsay Greenewalt, m Mary E. Hallock (?); 7. Crawford H. Greenewalt, m Margaretta Lammot du Pont 8. Nancy Crawford Greenewalt David Greenewalt Crawford H. Greenewalt, Jr. On a second page titled “York Co., Wills” it has “Moses Boyd Dec 29, 1777, Proved Jan 10, 1778 Ex. Wm McClean & James Black (Cumberland township) Wife Catharine Boyd Children – Margaret, Sarah & Jane.” All this was in a folder marked “Boyd, York Co., PA.” While the only date on these two pages was the date for proving the Will of Jan. 10, 1778. My first thought was that this family was part of the late Linda Lawhon of Texas, family of Robert Boyd and Eleanor McCullough. On checking this family, Robert’s fifth son, Moses Boyd was born about 1766 and died about 1816. He married in about 1790 Hannah Milligan, the daughter of James Milligan. So this does not appear to be the Moses Boyd from the folder. The second Boyd family that I knew lived in York County, PA, was part of Captain Adam Boyd’s of Ireland descendants, John Boyd (1731-1799) and Agnes Cooper, daughter of John Cooper and Alice Gill of Baltimore, Maryland. However, there is no known Moses Boyd in this family. While the Boyd in the 1790 US Census for York County, PA are listed as:- BOYD, Andrew PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Archibald PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, George PA Co: York Twp: Warrington BOYD, John PA Co: York Twp: Fawn BOYD, John PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Robert PA Co: York Twp: Unknown BOYD, Thomas PA Co: York Twp: Warrington BOYD, William PA Co: York Twp: Unknown Moses Boyd’s location within York County, PA, maybe found by looking for either Adam Black and/or James Black Unfortunately, from the Will, it would appear that Moses and Catherine Boyd only had three daughters, so it is very unlikely that we can get any DNA matches between Moses and Robert’s families or any other Boyd family. So it will be important to find the descendants of these three daughters to see what dates and locations they can add to this direct tree. This family of Moses and Catherine Boyd of York County, PA, COULD BE A BROTHER Robert Boyd, who married Eleanor McCulloch, as they had a son Moses, who could have been named after a brother. Because the other known Boyd families came from County Antrim, Ireland, it may mean that Moses and Catherine Boyd also came from this location before coming to York County, PA. Do any members know of this family of Moses Boyd of York County, PA; can provide any additional information or know the Greenewalt family? Thank you Mike Boyd Historical Committee House of Boyd Society
